Core and Shell: facciate storiche e nuovi edifici. Il caso dell’ex Chelsea and Fulham Power Station a Londra
2022
The maintenance of the façade(s) is one of the most common solutions – in countries where this intervention is allowed – which can also guarantee the “preservation” of the existing built herit- age, as well as the construction of new “zero land consumption buildings”. The English term used to identify this area of work is Façadism. The paper analyses a perfect example attributable to this area of work that is being implement- ed on the former Chelsea and Fulham Power Station in London. The refurbishment project, in the construction phase, was instructed to Midgard Design Service Ltd (Design Department of the Irish construction company JRL Group Limited) which will transform the entire area …
“TECHNOLOGICAL PROJECT” AND HERITAGE ENHANCEMENT (in CICOP)
2010
Recovering our building heritage has a fundamental role regarding renewal process, since it constitutes one of the strategies for urban and territorial balance. Building recovery, in the broadest sense of the word, means the renewal of precious constructions which have decayed or outdated but could be renewed and/or requalified. In other words, recovery is a subject which solves the probable damages of a building, trying to bring it back to its original living conditions; otherwise referring to the intervention which confronts the damages provoked by the weather and, more often than not, by the absence of maintenance. In any case, technological innovation can intervene systematically basing…
INTRODUZIONE
2021
This volume is an anthology of scientific papers and essays from different national academic institutions on the regeneration of degraded environments and the tools of participation aimed at building a sustainable project. Papers were presented in September 2020 in a cycle of study seminars entitled 'Transformation, Regeneration and Participation' organised by the University of Palermo, in the International Conference 'Scenarios of Abusive Housing' and in the Round Table 'Designing Participation', in International seminary ‘ATS Architectural Technology and Sustainability. What regeneration?’ in November 2007, October 2008 and July 2011 respectively, in Agrigento, Palermo and Kos (Greece). A…
The energy crisis of the contemporary city: intelligence, creativity and resilience.
2012
To address the energy crisis afflicting the contemporary city, recovery plans and retraining must mobilize new forms of inte…
Realistic Steady State Performance of an Electric Turbo-Compound Engine for Hybrid Propulsion System
2022
The efficiency of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) may be substantially increased if the unexpanded exhaust gas energy is efficiently recovered and employed for vehicle propulsion. This can be accomplished employing a properly designed exhaust gas turbine connected to a suitable generator whose output electric energy is stored in the vehicle storage system; a new hybrid propulsion system is hence delineated, where the power delivered by the main engine is combined to the power produced by the exhaust gas turbogenerator: previous studies, carried out under some simplifying assumptions, showed potential vehicle efficiency increments up to 15% with respect to a traditional turbocharged engine. …
OPTIMIZATION OF COGENERATION PLANT FOR APPLICATIONS IN FOOD INDUSTRY
2013
Cogeneration systems represent an effective solution for optimizing energy performance of users with contemporary thermal and electrical energy demand. An energy audit of an industrial pasta factory equipped with a cogeneration system natural gas fuelled has carried out along last two years. This CHP plant, with a 650 kWe capacity, currently covers a relevant fraction of the electric and high-temperature heat loads during peak hours, while it is switched off during off-peak hours because of the much lower electricity price. Heat content of flue gases is recovered by two cascaded gas-diathermic oil and diathermic oil- water heat exchangers; the superheated water obtained is then supplied to …
Supertargeting-based hierarchic evaluation for setting paths in relaxation of retrofitted Heat Exchanger Networks
2010
The application of pinch analysis to the retrofit of existing heat exchanger networks is a complex task, which can be hardly standardised due to the large number of unquantifiable design considerations. Top-down and bottom-up approaches have been usually pursued, respectively oriented to relax a Maximum Energy Recovery (MER) configuration and to improve the existing network by removing network pinches. In this paper the bottom-up approach is critically examined, considering a well known case study represented by an aromatics plant; a MER design is also obtained and evaluated, to represent a target for process improvement. The final objective of researches in this sector is the identificatio…
Energy Saving Optimizing the Ventilation Control in a Big Shopping Center
2018
The paper investigates the potential energy savings in the context of big shopping centers, thanks to the introduction of innovative technologies able to control the ventilation according the real requirement for comfort and health of indoor spaces. The case study analyses a big shopping center, where the ventilation is realized with a centralized air-conditioning plant, working with fixed air flows. Two solutions are proposed to reduce the energy consumption for ventilation. The first considers the installation of heat recovery exchangers, the second the introduction of a control system able to modulate the air exchange, according to the real requirements. An energetic and economic evaluat…
Green Roofs’ End of Life: A Literature Review
2023
Green roofs are increasingly being used in urban settings because of the many benefits they are capable of providing. Because of their widespread use, the issue of how to conduct proper disposal of green roofs once they have reached their end of life is beginning to be raised. The present study is a review of the scientific literature published between 2007 and 2022. Specifically, the contribution of this review study is to clarify whether a waste scenario exists and if so, identify the methodological frameworks and/or criteria used in green roof-related studies to establish the end-of-life scenario of a given green roof, which will then be used to analyze its environmental and economic per…
Organic Rankine Cycle fed by flat-plate solar collectors: a case study
2015
