Reversible stress softening and stress recovery of cellulose networks
2009
The mechanical properties of the plant cell wall play an important role in communication, differentiation and growth of plant cells. In particular, the expansive growth of plant cells is only possible because the material that forms the plant cell wall yields at a specific stress level, allowing for an increase in cell wall area. This process can be defined in mechanical terms as the relaxation of the wall stress. The current understanding of plant cell growth suggests that such relaxation behaviour occurs due to the presence of wall loosening agents rather than to the properties of the cellulose network itself. It is believed that certain nonenzymatic proteins, acting as wall loosening age…

Implementation of a global P-recovery system in urban wastewater treatment plants
2019
[EN] Current wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) paradigm is moving towards the so-called water resource recovery facilities in which sewage is considered a source of valuable resources. In particular, urban WWTPs are crucial systems to enhance phosphorus (P) recycling. This paper evaluates the implementation of a P-recovery system in Calahorra WWTP combining the operation of a new sludge line configuration coupled to a struvite crystallisation reactor at demonstration-scale. This new configuration consisted in the elutriation in the gravity thickener of the mixed sludge contained in the mixing chamber in order to reduce the phosphate load to the anaerobic digestion. The results indicated t…
Preliminary Results of ERAS Protocol in a Single Surgeon Prospective Case Series
2022
Background and Objectives: The aim was to compare the intra and postoperative outcomes between the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol versus the standard of care protocol (SCP) in patients who underwent radical cystectomy performed by a single surgeon. Materials and Methods: A retrospective comparative study was conducted including patients who underwent radical cystectomy from 2017 to 2020. Length of stay (LOS), incidence of ileus, early postoperative complications, and number of re-hospitalizations within 30 days were considered as primary comparative outcomes of the study. Results: Data were collected for 91 patients who underwent cystectomy, and 70 and 21 patients followed …
Resource recovery from food waste via biological processes
2021
Abstract The need for sustainable development is driving a major focus shift in the biowaste treatment sector. While traditional practices such as landfilling are progressively being banned/penalized due to their obvious environmental impacts and prevention policies are being implemented, the potential of food waste (FW) as a resource is being increasingly recognized. The immense amounts of FW produced worldwide—and its overall characteristics—make it a promising candidate for resource recovery if collected separately, a practice that is gaining popularity. This chapter aims at giving a general overview of the different processes that are being developed/implemented for resource recovery fr…
Subsistence/Semi-subsistence Agricultural Exploitations: Their Roles and Dynamics within Rural Economy/Rural Sustainable Development in Romania
2014
Abstract Within the Romanian agriculture subsistence / semi-subsistence agricultural exploitations continue to occupy an important part, the characteristics of their organization and functioning imparting a particular kind of dynamics. The study here aims at highlighting the perspectives on the evolution of subsistence / semi-subsistence agriculture in relation to rural economy and the sustainable rural development. Our main purpose is to bring into analysis the core issues which the Romanian small farms have to face and, at the same time, identify / propose solutions which would contribute to the economic recovery of the agricultural exploitations in question.
Sustainable and cost-efficient energy supply and utilisation through innovative concepts and technologies at regional, urban and single-user scales
2019
Abstract The environmental impact of the energy sector and the security and economics of energy supply and utilisation have been raising increasing concerns, stimulating the search for innovative solutions for a sustainable use of resources. This article provides an overview of published research in this area, with a focus on papers contributed in special issues of leading journals dedicated to the series of Conferences on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES), including the articles in the current special issue. Based on this review, research trends are identified and achievements supporting the energy transition are highlighted. The studies that focused…
NEW FINANCIAL RECOVERY PLANS OF ITALIAN LOCAL GOVERNMENTS: AN ASSESSMENT USING OUTCOME-ORIENTED DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT
This Ph.D. thesis investigates the new financial recovery plans as instruments which aim to avoid the bankruptcy of local governments in difficulties. This tool was approved by the Italian Central Government by Law Decree No. 174 of 2012. The goal of this work is to verify whether a recovery plan is capable of ensuring fiscal discipline and financial sustainability. The literature on the subject focuses mainly on two aspects: the description of legal framework and the static analysis of recovery plans. The present research, instead, explores the drafting process of recovery plans by investigating the local governments’ decision-making process and the involvement of stakeholders in planning …
Infarctus cérébral et plasticité : focus sur le BDNF
2011
Functional recovery after ischemic stroke largely involves brain plasticity and more accurately its ability to reorganize the neuronal networks spared by the infarct. Studies conducted on animals using different ischemic stroke models have demonstrated that plastic changes are induced by BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). Hence, increasing levels of BDNF in the brain is considered a promising therapeutic strategy to reduce post-stroke impairments. In this context, our work had 2 aims: 1) In a rat model, to identify cells involved in the over-production of BDNF and to evaluate the pertinence of the measurement of circulating BDNF levels to estimate brain BDNF levels; 2) In ischemic st…
THE MACHINE OF THE WATER IN PALERMO INTRA-MOENIA - TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE RECOVERY OF TE CITY SCENE
2009
The study characterizes “the element water”, like architectonic material and principle base of the city planning, for the recovery of Palermo intra-moenia and for the valorization of the cultural resources and acclimatizes them local. T…
