Mechanisms of adaptation from a multiple to a single step recovery strategy following repeated exposure to forward loss of balance in older adults
2012
When released from an initial, static, forward lean angle and instructed to recover with a single step, some older adults are able to meet the task requirements, whereas others either stumble or fall. The purpose of the present study was to use the concept of margin of stability (MoS) to investigate balance recovery responses in the anterior-posterior direction exhibited by older single steppers, multiple steppers and those that are able to adapt from multiple to single steps following exposure to repeated forward loss of balance. One hundred and fifty-one healthy, community dwelling, older adults, aged 65–80 years, participated in the study. Participants performed four trials of the balanc…
Analysis of particles size distributions in Mg(OH)2 precipitation from highly concentrated MgCl2 solutions
2022
Magnesium is a raw material of great importance, which attracted increasing interest in the last years. A promising route is to recover magnesium in the form of Magnesium Hydroxide via precipitation from highly concentrated Mg2+ resources, e.g. industrial or natural brines and bitterns. Several production methods and characterization procedures have been presented in the literature reporting a broad variety of Mg(OH)2 particle sizes. In the present work, a detailed experimental investigation is aiming to shed light on the characteristics of produced Mg(OH)2 particles and their dependence upon the reacting conditions. To this purpose, two T-shaped mixers were employed to tune and control the…
Surface Modified Arundo Donax Natural Fibers for Oil Spill Recovery
2021
The use of green materials for oil recovery applications is the goal to be achieved to reduce the environmental impact of these essential processes. In this context, Arundo Donax L. is a plant known for its wide uses whose absorbent properties have been previously investigated. In this paper, the influence of silane surface treatment on the absorbent behavior of natural fibers extracted from the culms of this eco-friendly and cost-effective material was assessed. A close correspondence has been identified between the physical characteristics of the investigated oil and the fiber size, by means of microstructural and morphological analysis. Excellent results have been achieved with an absorp…

The purpose of this study was to investigate blood-based biomarkers and their regulation with regard to different recovery-stress states. A total of 35 male elite athletes (13 badminton, 22 soccer players) were recruited, and two venous blood samples were taken: one in a ‘recovered’ state (REC) after a minimum of one-day rest from exercise and another one in a ‘non-recovered’ state (NOR) after a habitual loading microcycle. Overall, 23 blood-based biomarkers of different physiologic domains, which address inflammation, muscle damage, and tissue repair, were analyzed by Luminex assays. Across all athletes, only creatine kinase (CK), interleukin (IL-) 6, and IL-17A showed higher concentration…
THE BUILDING RECOVERY OF A TRUTH OF PALERMO (SICILY)
2008
The building recovery of a truth of Palermo (Sicily) -The study means to make its contribution to the knowledge and to the recovery of the architectural patrimony which is chronological inserted in the arc of xxth century, to study its cultural and material weaving, spotlighting the truth of Palermo. It is characterised by an evident heritage and hidden inheritances which seem to be from successive human vicissitudes, This research aims at the creation of new models of interpretation of the cultural heritage,
HISTORICAL SCIENTIFIC AND EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCHES AIMED AT FINDING NEW TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTS TO RECOVER
2005
The “building recovery” has been the key point of various talks that, since the ‘60s, have regarded planning and urban landscaping. The reinforced concrete-ruled XXth century has generated buildings that have resulted technologically flawed, if not altogether unattractive. These flaws can be justified by premature use of certain techniques (not will-known the necessity of historical research), but this can not justify the modern degraded townships, the loss of local urban characteristics and the environmental unbalancing. Where sites are of XXth century cultural heritage? Which are the methodologies for documenting and managing? This research is aimed at analysing new techniques and materia…
Restoration and enhancement of KOS City - Greece
2012
Abusiveness phenomenon is an essentially political, social and economi-cal fact in all territories that determines a disadvantage in the community and in its environment. Architectural is “the science of living” and it is called to answer on a problem which is progressively go destroying living places. Architectural must therefore answers to housing needs. Abusiveness is a housing emergency which oppresses towns and citiziens. Architectural does-n’t feel guilty because for too many years architects did something else, cor-rupted building did the rest.

Assessment of a pilot system for seawater desalination based on vacuum multi-effect membrane distillation with enhanced heat recovery
2018
Abstract This work presents the evaluation of an innovative system based on vacuum multi-effect membrane distillation modules (V-MEMD) for seawater desalination at pilot scale. This four-effect unit introduces a remarkable modification from previous V-MEMD systems, consisting of the use of the seawater feed flow as cooling in the condenser, rather than a separate circuit. Preheating the feed in the condenser improved heat efficiency (maximum gained output ratio obtained for seawater was 3.2). Maximum distillate fluxes reached 8.5 l h−1 m−2 for hot feed temperature 75 °C and feed flow rate 150 l h−1. Increasing both parameters to raise the productivity was hindered by the inability of the co…
