Physiological and physical performance changes during a 20-day winter military training course and its subsequent 10-day recovery period

2023

The present study investigated physiological, mental and physical performance changes during a 20-day winter military training course and the following 10-day recovery period. Fifty-eight (age 19 ± 1 years, height 182 ± 6 cm, body mass 78.5 ± 7.2 kg) male soldiers volunteered. Body composition, serum biomarker levels and performance tests were measured four times during the study. In addition, questionnaires were collected daily for subjective stress and rate of perceived exertion. The course induced significant declines in body (−3.9%, p < 0.05) and fat mass (−31.6%, p < 0.05) as well as in all assessed physical performance variables (−9.2 - −20.2%, p < 0.05), testosterone (−73.7%, p < 0.0…

Acute Neuromuscular and Hormonal Responses to Power, Strength, and Hypertrophic Protocols and Training Background

2022

This study investigated how two slightly different athlete groups would differ in acute neuromuscular and endocrine responses to specific resistance exercise loadings and recovery compared to untrained participants. Power athletes (PA, n = 8), strength athletes (SA, n = 8) and non-athletes (NA, n = 7) performed power (PL, 7 × 6 × 50% of 1RM), maximal strength (MSL, 7 × 3 × 3RM), and hypertrophic (HL, 5 × 10 × 10RM) loadings in Smith-machine back-squat. Neuromuscular performance, serum testosterone, growth hormone, and cortisol concentrations, and blood lactate (BL) were measured before (Pre), at Mid and after (Post) loading, and after recovery for 24 and 48 h. All loadings led to acute decr…

Neuromuscular Performance and Hormonal Profile During Military Training and Subsequent Recovery Period

2019

Introduction Military training loads may induce different physiological responses in garrison and field training and only a little is known about how short-time recovery, lasting a few days, affects neuromuscular fitness and hormonal profile. This study aimed to investigate the effects of garrison and field military service on neuromuscular performance and hormonal profile and to evaluate the effects of a 3-day recovery on those factors. Methods Twenty healthy male soldiers (20 ± 1 years) participated in the study, which consisted of 4 days of garrison training [days (D) 1–4] and 7 days of military field training (Days 5–12) followed by a 3-day recovery period (Day 15). Serum hormone concen…

Individualized Endurance Training Based on Recovery and Training Status in Recreational Runners

2022

Purpose Long-term development of endurance performance requires a proper balance between strain and recovery. While responses and adaptations to training are highly individual, this study examined whether individually-adjusted endurance training based on recovery and training status would lead to greater adaptations compared to a predefined program. Methods Recreational runners were divided into predefined (PD, n = 14) or individualized (IND, n = 16) training groups. In IND, the training load was decreased, maintained or increased twice a week based on nocturnal heart rate variability, perceived recovery, and heart rate-running speed index. Both groups performed three-week preparatory, six-…

The Role of Surface Acting in the Relationship between Job Stressors, General Health and Need for Recovery Based on the Frequency of Interactions at …

2022

The aim of the study was to verify whether the frequency of face-to-face interactions with the public at work can reveal differences in how people react to emotional regulation demands. In particular, we investigated the mediating role of surface acting (a strategy of dealing with emotional dissonance) in the relationship between two typical job stressors (workload and mental load) and two outcomes closely related to work-related well-being: employees’ general health and the need for recovery. Prior studies investigating the detrimental effects of emotional dissonance mostly focused on service workers. However, in light of a survey conducted by the European Agency for Safety and Health at W…

Heart rate recovery after maximal and submaximal exercise

2012

Pasi Karjalainen (2012). Heart rate recovery after maximal and submaximal exercise. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, Master thesis in exercise physiology, 76 pages. Heart rate recovery (HRR) after exercise reflects autonomic control of the heart. Heart rate recovery (HRR) has shown to have prognostic value among asymptomatic populations and patients with diseases. In addition, changes in HRR may reflect the effects of training load. The role of parasympathetic reactivation in decrease of heart rate (HR) is known to be strong immediately after the cessation of exercise. It is also shown that HRR is affected by the activity of the sympathetic system that is…

Post-exercise heart rate variability : a new approach to evaluation of exercise-induced physiological training load

2015

To improve maximal endurance performance, an optimal physiological training load, i.e. the balance between exercise and recovery, is required. In general, the goal of a single endurance exercise session is to transiently disturb body homeostasis after which a so-called supercompensation, an improvement in performance, can occur if the recovery period is adequate. The physical training load of a single exercise session consists of the combination of exercise intensity and duration. At the present time, there is no single tool to quantify the amount of disturbance of homeostasis that is equal to physiological training load of a single exercise session. Heart rate variability (HRV), the change…

Bilevel heat exchanger network synthesis with an interactive multi-objective optimization method

2012

Abstract Heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) has been an active research area for more than 40 years because well-designed heat exchanger networks enable heat recovery in process industries in an energy- and cost-efficient manner. Due to ever increasing global competition and need to decrease the harmful effects done on the environment, there still is a continuous need to improve the heat exchanger networks and their synthesizing methods. In this work we present a HENS method that combines an interactive multi-objective optimization method with a simultaneous bilevel HENS method, where the bilevel part of the method is based on grouping of process streams and building aggregate streams …

The transformation of a building of the 1970s into a contemporary sustainable building in the Mediterranean Basin

2008

The paper shows the design strategies adopted by a group of graduands of the Faculty of Building Engineering at the University of Palermo involved in a research project aimed to analyse the problems related to the renovation of modern buildings and to solve them by using sustainable approach. In particular, the aim of the research is to investigate these problems in the context of the Mediterranean Basin by adopting, when possible, design criteria inherited by the traditional architecture where sustainable design strategies were used unconsciously. The graduands thesis consists in the transformation of Mazara City Hall into the new "Satiro Danzante Museum" by using natural ventilation syste…

Cultural heritage through history and nature: conservation and re-use. The Scicli case study

2013

The research originates from a relationship between a local body of illustrious traditions and a research facility of the University of Palermo – the Interdepartmental Research Centre on Historical Centres (hereafter C.I.R.CE.S.), that has the aim of providing consultancy and scientific support to the initiatives of territorial bodies concerning policies and urban and territorial redevelopment plans and the redevelopment of historical centres. Scicli is one of the most important towns belonging to the province of Ragusa.
The urban centre, in addition to being able to boast a special identity deriving from the peculiar impact of the dazzling baroque architectures on the surrounding landscap…
