Abstract Objective To report morbidity and oncological outcomes in a consecutive series of lateral isolated recurrent gynecological cancer involving the pelvic side wall (PSW) including the iliopsoas muscle. Material and methods We retrospectively evaluated a consecutive series between 6/2013 and 12/2015 of lateral isolated recurrent gynecological malignancies treated with a lateral endopelvic resection (LEPR). LEPR was defined as an en-bloc lateral resection of a pelvic tumor with sidewall muscle, and/or bone, and/or major nerve, and/or major vascular structure. ObjectiveThe aim of our study was to evaluate morbidity, mortality, and long-term survival of patients who underwent pelvic exenteration (PE) with curative intent for recurrence of endometrial adenocarcinoma during a single decade.MethodsWe defined a cohort of 21 patients who met our inclusion criteria, referred to 4 cooperating gynecologic oncology settings in Germany and Italy between 2000 and 2011. Data regarding surgery, histology, and oncologic outcomes were collected and statistically evaluated. Recurrent Meningitis Associated With Duane Syndrome Type 1

We present the case of a 17-month-old male patient with a bilateral Duane syndrome type 1 associated to unilateral cochleovestibular dysplasia, perilymphatic fistula and recurrent meningitis. Diagnosis was carried out by MRI and CT scan. His management and treatment are described, as well as the postoperative evolution. We believe this is an exceptional case due to the low frequency of this syndrome, as well as to the otoneurological complications.

Extraction of the Muon Signals Recorded with the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory Using Recurrent Neural Networks

The Pierre Auger Observatory, at present the largest cosmic-ray observatory ever built, is instrumented with a ground array of 1600 water-Cherenkov detectors, known as the Surface Detector (SD). The SD samples the secondary particle content (mostly photons, electrons, positrons and muons) of extensive air showers initiated by cosmic rays with energies ranging from $10^{17}~$eV up to more than $10^{20}~$eV. Measuring the independent contribution of the muon component to the total registered signal is crucial to enhance the capability of the Observatory to estimate the mass of the cosmic rays on an event-by-event basis. Hourly Forecasting of SO2 Pollutant Concentration Using an Elman Neural Network

In this paper the first results produced by an Elman neural network for hourly SO2 ground concentration forecasting are presented. Time series has been recorded between 1998 and 2001 and are referred to a monitoring station of SO2 in the industrial site of Priolo, Syracuse, Italy. Data has been kindly provided by CIPA (Consorzio Industriale per la Protezione dell'Ambiente, Siracusa, Italia). Time series parameters are the horizontal and vertical wind velocity, the wind direction, the stability classes of Thomas, the base level of the layer of the atmospheric stability, the gradient of the potential temperature and the difference of the potential temperature of reference.

Neural networks are composed of basic units somewhat analogous to neurons. These units are linked to each other by connections whose strength is modifiable as a result of a learning process or algorithm. Each of these units integrates independently (in paral lel) the information provided by its synapses in order to evaluate its state of activation. Re-irradiation With Carbon Ion Radiotherapy for Pelvic Rectal Cancer Recurrences in Patients Previously Irradiated to the Pelvis

Background/Aim: Re-irradiation of locally recurrent rectal cancer poses challenges due to the proximity of critical organs, such as the bowel. This study aimed at evaluating the safety and efficacy of re-irradiation with Carbon Ion Radiotherapy (CIRT) in rectal cancer patients with local recurrence. Patients and Methods: Between 2014 and 2018, 14 patients were treated at the National Center of Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO Foundation) with CIRT for locally recurrent rectal cancer. Introduction: Thyroidectomy poses many challenges for the surgeon who undertakes endocrine surgery and iatrogenic injury of inferior laryngeal nerve (ILN) is one of the most serious (0-20%). We report our personal experience of a series of 313 thyroidectomy with intraoperative identification of ILN. Methods: 313 patients (253 females, 60 males, whose age was between 17 and 86 years, mean 41 years) had undergone thyroidectomy in our Operative Unit from January 2000 to January 2004.
