Diagnostic Validity of Digital Imaging Fiber-Optic Transillumination (DIFOTI) and Near-Infrared Light Transillumination (NILT) for Caries in Dentine.

2020

The objective of the study is to analyse the available evidence for the validity of the transillumination method in the diagnosis of interproximal caries. Bibliographic searches were carried out in three data bases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus) with the key words “Transillumination AND caries”. A total of 11 studies were selected for the qualitative analysis and meta-analysis. In the qualitative analysis, both in vivo and in vitro studies were included. The gold standards were tomography, digital radiography, and clinical visual diagnosis. The meta-analysis determined the sensitivity, specificity, and area below the ROC curve relative to the transillumination method in the diagnosis …

Modulation of hippocampal neurogenesis by Nano-Pulsed Laser Therapy

Neurogenesis is a physiological process through which new neurons are generated and it occurs throughout life, subverting the old dogma stating to the inability of the adult brain to replace neurons. Specifically, neurogenesis take place thanks to the presence of neuronal stem cells (NSCs) located in the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricle and in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Data present in the literature demonstrate that neurogenesis in the hippocampus decreases during aging and it is impaired in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, and after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a chronic disease that oc…

Crotofolane Diterpenoids and Other Constituents Isolated from Croton kilwae

2023

Six new crotofolane diterpenoids (1-6) and 13 known compounds (7-19) were isolated from the MeOH- CH2Cl2 (1:1, v/v) extracts of the leaves and stem bark of Croton kilwae. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectroscopic and mass spectrometric data. The structure of crotokilwaepoxide A (1) was confirmed by single -crystal X-ray diffraction, allowing for the determination of its absolute configuration. The crude extracts and the isolated compounds were investigated for antiviral activity against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human rhinovirus type-2 (HRV-2) in HEp-2 and HeLa cells, respectively, for antibacterial activity against the Gram-posit…

Structured-light imaging through scattering

2016

We present a structured illumination technique to image objects hidden beneath scattering. The sample is computationally retrieved from a known ensemble of light patterns codified onto a digital micromirror device and photocurrent fluctuations provided by a detector with no spatial resolution. Results of laboratory experiments will be shown. Article not available.

Collective atomic effects in resonance fluorescence

1977

We suggest that the statistical properties of the scattered radiation in resonance-fluorescence experiments may be affected significantly by the existence of atomic correlations. The scattered light spectrum from two- and three-atom collective systems has been calculated and compared with the one-atom spectrum. The differences are quite significant for weak fields, but become less pronounced as the intensity of the driving field is increased. In addition, we have calculated the scattered intensity correlation function for collectively interacting systems, and found that its behavior is very different from that of the single-atom intensity correlation function, both for weak and strong incid…

Light propagation in triple-film hetero-opals

2005

Spectra of transmitted and forward scattered light of single opal films and triple-film hetero-opals have been compared. The presence of an intermediate film in hetero-opal results in an anomalous increase of the scattered light intensity and in the change of the mainly ballistic light propagation regime to the mainly diffusive one in the frequency range of the photonic bandgap defect state.

A method of evaluation of measured light intensities and degrees of polarization of a unit volume of turbid air

1965

In order to interpret scattered light measurements a comparison with theoretical values is necessary. It is demonstrated by means of an example the possibility to obtain a first view on the measurement results. From calculated values of various aerosol size distribution models as well as from measurements were computed: 1) the angular quotients of scattered light intensity (i.e., quotients of intensity at two scattering angles and the same wavelength) and 2) the wavelength quotients (i.e., quotients of intensity at two wavelengths and the same scattering angle). The comparison between measured and theoretical values informs us of the exponent of the aerosol size distribution and its boundar…

Wooden Surface Investigation: an Optical Approach Based on Shadow Moiré

2007

The interest in the mechanical behaviour of wood is a very important task due to the increasing role played by wood structures in modern architecture as well as its applicability in restoration of ancient buildings. The behaviour of wooden surfaces experiencing variable humidity conditions is of great importance both with concern to performances of wooden building’s structures and to ensure correct restoration and conservation of art works like wooden sculptures and panel paintings [1]. In literature there are only a few studies dealing with the influence of moisture on the physical properties of wood [1,2]. The characterization of wooden behaviour related to changes in the humidity level c…

Geometric Properties of the 3D Spine Curve

2003

Through a 3D reconstruction of the human back surface using structured light techniques, we study the properties of spine curve by means of a set of parameters related to measures commonly applied in medicine. In this way, descriptors for measuring the abnormalities in the projections of the front and sagittal planes can be computed. We build the spine curve in 3D and analyse the behaviour of the Frenet frame when along the curve the deformation processes in idiophatic scoliosis appear.
