Economic strain and public support for redistribution : a comparative analysis of 28 European countries

2012

Author's version of an article in the journal: Journal of Social Policy. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0047279412000748 Is public support for redistribution affected by the number of people experiencing economic strain in a country? This question is investigated by comparing twenty-eight countries in the fourth round of the European Social Survey 2008-09 using two-level linear regression models. The results show that individuals reporting economic strain support redistribution more strongly than those who do not experience economic strain. Further, individuals living in countries where many other people report economic strain also support redistribution mo…

First Principles Calculations of Oxygen Vacancy Formation and Migration in Ba1−xSrxCo1−yFeyO3−δPerovskites

2011

Based on first principles DFT calculations, we analyze oxygen vacancy formation and migration energies as a function of chemical composition in complex multicomponent (Ba,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3−δ perovskites which are candidate materials for SOFC cathodes and permeation membranes. The atomic relaxation, electronic charge redistribution and energies of the transition states of oxygen migration are compared for several perovskites to elucidate the atomistic reason for the exceptionally low migration barrier in Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ that was previously determined experimentally. The critical comparison of Ba1−xSrxCo1−yFeyO3−δ perovskites with different cation compositions and arrangements shows that …

The neorepublican challenge to egalitarian-liberalism: evaluating justifications of redistributive institutions

2019

Neorepublicans like Philip Pettit and Frank Lovett claim that neorepublicanism provides a superior normative research program compared to egalitarian-liberalism. Particularly, they argue that neore...

Measuring soil erosion by field plots: Understanding the sources of variation

2006

Soil erosion plots of different types and sizes are widely used to investigate the geomorphological processes related to soil erosion. This field method has provided a variety of results, depending on the characteristics of the plots, on their suitability to reflect the ecosystem's characteristics and on the objectives of each particular research. The coupling of real soil loss at patch and slope scale within a landscape and the values obtained by field plots depend, among other things, on how good the methodology performs over a set of ecosystem properties, such as those related with temporal and spatial scale issues, disturbance and representation of natural conditions, and the ability to…

Does the Pension System’s Income Statement Really Matter? A Proposal for An NDC Scheme with Disability and Minimum Pension Benefits

2019

This paper develops a full accounting model for monitoring the solvency of a notional defined contribution (NDC) pension scheme with disability and minimum pension benefits. Using the annual report of the Swedish pension system as a benchmark (TSPS, 2019), we extend the “Swedish” actuarial balance developed by Perez-Salamero et al. (2017) by adding an income statement which fully explains the reasons behind the changes in the system’s solvency by type of benefit. In line with the reference model, assets and liabilities are measured at present value at each reporting date, and changes in present value are reported in each period as income or expenses and are included on the income statement.…

A “Swedish” actuarial balance for a notional defined contribution pension scheme with disability and minimum pension benefits

2017

This article proposes a “Swedish” type actuarial balance sheet (ABS) for a notional defined contribution (NDC) scheme with disability and minimum pension benefits. The proposed ABS splits the pension system in two parts: the pure NDC part and the redistributive part, which includes the assets and liabilities originating from non-contributory rights. The article contains a numerical example that sheds light on the real applicability of our proposal. The model has practical implications that could be of interest to policy-makers, given that it integrates actuarial and social aspects of public pensions and discloses the real cost of redistribution through minimum pensions.

Misure di agglomerazione spaziale nei Sistemi Locali del Lavoro siciliani

2009

Spatial agglomeration indicators in the Sicilian Local Labour Systems Objectives - This paper examines the links among productive specialization, variety of the economic environment and knowledge spillovers on the basis of the territorial analyses present in the current literature. With the aim of identifying localization benefits in a particular area, some aspects of business settling are compared with trends in the development of economic activities and, particularly, with agglomeration process of the firms. Methods and Results The empirical analysis will be carried out pointing to the dynamics of employment consequent to the effects of the externalities above mentioned. Employment data a…

Effect of residual stresses and their redistribution on the fatigue crack growth in cold-worked holes

2009

The cold-expansion process is widely used to enhance the fatigue life of structures with fastener holes. Various studies assert that the cold-expansion improves the fatigue strength of fastener holes; however, the improvement of fatigue life is difficult to quantify. The influence on fatigue life of cold-worked hole in a 6061-T6 alluminum allosy was studied by numerical and experimental tests. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out to find the crack length and growth rates of crack propagating from hole edge. Thus, the cold-expansion process was modeled with a Lagrangian implicit code for metal forming to obtain the residual stress field. Progressive crack growth along the observed fat…
