It is known that species belonging to the lowest metazoan phylum, the Porifera (sponges), do not develop tumors. Sponge cells share with tumor cells of higher animals at least one characteristic; they contain high levels of telomerase activity, suggesting that they possess a high proliferation capacity. This assumption, however, has not been substantiated experimentally. [EN] Au(I)/Au(III) catalytic cycles are catalytically competent to perform the oxidative coupling of alkynes in the homogeneous phase at room temperature and without any protecting atmosphere. Selectfluor as oxidant, wet acetonitrile as solvent, and sodium carbonate as base are the reagents of choice. Both aromatic and alkyl alkynes can be coupled, and mechanistic studies reveal that at least two gold species having different oxidation states are implicated in the key step of the coupling.

A large number of respiratory pathways can be established by combining different electron donors and acceptors. Spin-State-Dependent Redox-Catalytic Activity of a Switchable Iron(II) Complex

The spin state of catalytically active 3d metal centers plays a significant role for their activity in enzymatic processes and organometallic catalysis. Here we report on the catalytic activity of a Fe(II) coordination compound that can undergo a cooperative switch between low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states. Catalytic measurements within 291 - 318 K temperature region reveal a drastic drop of the catalytic activity upon conversion of metallic centers from the LS to the HS form. For a thermoswitchable [Fe(NH2trz)3]Br2 complex (Tup = 305 K), an activation energy is found to be considerably lower for the LS state (158 kJ mol-1) comparing to the HS state (305 kJ mol-1). AbstractConjugated polymers with narrow band gap are promising candidates for symmetric electrochemical devices, such as electrochromics and redox supercapacitors, which involve the pand n-doped state of the polymer. Polydithienothiophene materials which are prepared from isomer monomers show this characteristic. The copolymerisation of two dithienothiophene isomers leads to materials whose electronic properties depend on the monomer ratio. Optical and electrochemical characterizations of different copolymers are reported and discussed.

Exposure of a THF solution of tantalocene dichloride complexes (η 5 -Cp*)TaCl 2 (η 5 -C 5 H 4 -SiMe 3 ) (1) and (η 5 -Cp*)TaCl 2 (η 5 -C 5 H 5 ) (2) to the ambient atmosphere for 12 h leads to the formation of new tantalum(V) cationic hydroxo complexes [(η 5 -Cp*)TaCl(OH)(η 5 -C 5 H 4 SiMe 3 )] + -Cl- (3) and [(η 5 -Cp*)TaCl(OH)(η 5 -C 5 H 5 )]+Cl - (4). This oxidation reaction is more rapid under oxygen atmosphere since the hydroxo complexes are obtained in better yields within only 15 min. Abstract A time-monitoring sensor based on the oxidation of leuco methylene blue (LMB) to methylene blue (MB) was developed. The sensor changes its color from yellow to green in the presence of oxygen and was integrated into a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. The diffusion of the oxygen in the polymer matrix as well as the oxygen uptake due to the oxidation reaction determines the time monitoring of the sensor. A physical model has been developed that accounts for both the diffusion as well as the oxidation reaction. For this purpose, the reaction kinetics was determined experimentally.
