Serum malondialdehyde in HIV-seropositive children negatively correlates with CD4+ lymphocytes count.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with oxidative stress as it has been demonstrated in adult-seropositive individuals. We show in this study that serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration of HIV-infected children was significantly higher than in control children. A negative correlation (r = -0.515) was found in HIV-infected children between their CD4+ lymphocyte count, and MDA concentration but not with serum antioxidant status. The increase of MDA concentration in HIV-seropositive children confirms the involvement of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of this infection also in childhood. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of low birth weight at term on serum lipoproteins. Lipid and apolipoprotein (apo) contents were investigated in cord sera of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) newborns at term (2290 g +/- 33 g) and compared with those of appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) newborns (3570 g +/- 93 g). In SGA newborns, VLDL amounts were twofold higher, whereas LDL, HDL2 and HDL3 contents were lower than in AGA newborns (-38%, -44% and -42%, respectively). Various studies have been published in Italy regarding the different BRCA1 mutations, but only the BRCA1-5083del19 mutation is recurrent and specific to individuals of Italian descent with a founder effect on the Calabrian population. The carcinogenic activity of the two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), picene (benzo[a]chrysene) and dibenz[a,h]anthracene (DBA), was determined in NMRI mice by five different experimental protocols in order to find out if picene is a carcinogen as predicted by recent quantum mechanical calculations in contrast to earlier observations which could not confirm any carcinogenic activity of picene. Single s.c. treatment of adult mice with picene or DBA (308 nmol/animal, each) led to the formation of fibrosarcomas in 63.3% of treated animals regardless of the PAH used.
