klebsiella pneumoniae-reactive t cells in blood and synovial fluid of patients with ankylosing spondylitis comparison with hla–b27 + healthy control …

1995

Objective To study the frequency of Klebsiella pneumoniae-responsive T cells in the peripheral blood (PB) of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients compared with that in healthy HLA-B27+ donors, and to examine T lymphocyte clones (TLC) derived from AS patient synovial fluid (SF) for the presence of Klebsiella reactivity. Methods Limiting dilution analysis of PB T cells in 8 patients with active AS and in 8 HLA-B27+ healthy subjects was used to determine the frequency of PB T cells responsive to K pneumoniae and Escherichia coli GroEL. SF T cells from a patient with active AS were cloned, and 125 TLC were characterized in proliferation assays. Results There were fewer T cells in the PB of AS p…

Upper incisor to Soft Tissue Plane (UI-STP) : a new reference for diagnosis and planning in dentofacial deformities

2009

Planning in orthognathic surgery has been and still is an open issue. We have evolved from 2D classical cephalometric hard-tissue planning to 2D soft tissue planning, and finally to 3D and hard and soft tissue evaluation. This, to our knowledge, is the first description of a new Soft Tissue Plane (STP) and its relationship with the anterior position of the upper incisor (UI). Profile photographs of 110 ?attractive individuals? with lips at rest or smiling and with upper incisor shown were used. The photographs used were of 65 professional models from two international agencies and 45 individuals considered most attractive in the internet forums, which included catwalk models and actors. In …

Increased facilitation of the primary motor cortex following 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the contralateral cerebellum in nor…

2005

Connections between the cerebellum and the contralateral motor cortex are dense and important, but their physiological significance is difficult to measure in humans. We have studied a group of 10 healthy subjects to test whether a modulation of the excitability of the left cerebellum can affect the excitability of the contralateral motor cortex. We used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) at 1 Hz frequency to transiently depress the excitability of the left cerebellar cortex and paired-pulse TMS testing of intracortical inhibition (ICI) and intracortical facilitation (ICF) to probe the excitability of cortico-cortical connections in the right motor cortex. The cortical sile…

Overestimation of numerical distances in the left side of space

2004

Normal subjects presented with a middle number and two left- and right-sided outer numbers overestimate the numerical distance between the middle number and that positioned at its left side. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the right posterior parietal cortex specifically counteracts this bias, suggesting that the mental representation of space defined by numbers is shifted toward the left side depending on a greater activity of the right hemisphere.

General Factor of Personality Questionnaire (GFPQ): Only one Factor to Understand Personality?

2010

This study proposes a psychometric approach to assess the General Factor of Personality (GFP) to explain the whole personality. This approach defends the existence of one basic factor that represents the overall personality. The General Factor of Personality Questionnaire (GFPQ) is presented to measure the basic, combined trait of the complete personality. The questionnaire includes 20 items and is constituted by two scales with 10 items each one: the Extraversion Scale (ES) and the Introversion Scale (IS). The GFPQ shows adequate internal consistency and construct validity, while the relationships with the personality factors of other models and with psychopathology are as expected. It cor…

Cognitive functioning after medial frontal lobe damage including the anterior cingulate cortex: A preliminary investigation

2006

Two patients with medial frontal lobe damage involving the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) performed a range of cognitive tasks, including tests of executive function and anterior attention. Both patients lesions extended beyond the ACC, therefore caution needs to be exerted in ascribing observed deficits to the ACC alone. Patient performance was compared with age and education matched healthy controls. Both patients showed intact intellectual, memory, and language abilities. No clear-cut abnormalities were noted in visuoperceptual functions. Speed of information processing was mildly reduced only in Patient 2 (bilateral ACC lesion). The patients demonstrated weak or impaired performance on…

Serum levels of cytokines in chronic liver diseases

1992

Serum levels of interleukin-1 (IL-1 beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were investigated in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD) and correlated with the type of underlying disease and various clinical and laboratory parameters. Two hundred sixty-four patients suffering from various CLD were studied; 136 cases presented with liver cirrhosis, and 128 patients were in the noncirrhotic stage of their underlying liver diseases. Serum levels of IL-1 beta, IL-6, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, and CRP were elevated in patients with CLD. Endogenous cytokine patterns in CLD were stage dependent and only margina…

Spatial resolution of fMRI in the human parasylvian cortex: Comparison of somatosensory and auditory activation

2005

Abstract In spite of its outstanding spatial resolution, the biological resolution of functional MRI may be worse because it depends on the vascular architecture of the brain. Here, we compared the activation patterns of the secondary somatosensory and parietal ventral cortex (SII/PV) with that of the primary auditory cortex and adjacent areas (AI/AII). These two brain regions are located immediately adjacent to each other on opposite banks of the Sylvian fissure, and are anatomically and functionally distinct. In 12 healthy subjects, SII/PV was activated by pneumatic tactile stimuli applied to the index finger (0.5 cm 2 contact area, 4 bar pressure), and AI/AII by amplitude-modulated tones…

Dominance for Vestibular Cortical Function in the Non-dominant Hemisphere

2003

The aim of this (15)O-labelled H(2)O bolus positron emission tomography (PET) study was to analyse the hemispheric dominance of the vestibular cortical system. Therefore, the differential effects of caloric vestibular stimulation (right or left ear irrigation with warm water at 44 degrees C) on cortical and subcortical activation were studied in 12 right-handed and 12 left-handed healthy volunteers. Caloric irrigation induces a direction-specific sensation of rotation and nystagmus. Significant regional cerebral blood flow increases were found in a network within both hemispheres, including the superior frontal gyrus/sulcus, the precentral gyrus and the inferior parietal lobule with the sup…

The influence of rTMS over prefrontal and motor areas in a morphological task: grammatical vs. semantic effects

2008

We investigated the differential role of two frontal regions in the processing of grammatical and semantic knowledge. Given the documented specificity of the prefrontal cortex for the grammatical class of verbs, and of the primary motor cortex for the semantic class of action words, we sought to investigate whether the prefrontal cortex is also sensitive to semantic effects, and whether the motor cortex is also sensitive to grammatical class effects. We used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to suppress the excitability of a portion of left prefontal cortex (first experiment) and of the motor area (second experiment). In the first experiment we found that rTMS applied to t…
