Elevated serum leptin concentrations in type 2 diabetic patients with microalbuminuria and macroalbuminuria

1999

Leptin levels are elevated in end-stage renal disease, suggesting an impairment of renal leptin degradation. The present study aimed to determine whether leptin levels are also elevated in patients with earlier stages of renal disease, ie, microalbuminuric and macroalbuminuric nephropathy. A total of 60 subjects were assigned to two study groups. Group A contained 10 type 2 diabetics with macroalbuminuria, 10 type 2 diabetics with normoalbuminuria, and 10 healthy control subjects. Group B contained 10 type 2 diabetics with microalbuminuria, 10 type 2 diabetics with normoalbuminuria, and 10 healthy controls. The subgroups of both study groups were matched for sex and body fatness. In group A…

Leptin: A pivotal mediator of intestinal inflammation in mice

2002

Abstract Background & Aims: In addition to acting as a regulator of food intake and energy expenditure, leptin can also modulate immune and inflammatory responses. The role of leptin in intestinal inflammation is the focus of the present study. Methods: Acute and chronic colitis were induced in leptin-deficient ob/ob or wild-type (WT) mice using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) or trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). The severity of colitis was evaluated, and possible mechanisms were studied. Results: Leptin directly stimulates intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) and lamina propria mononuclear cells (LPMCs). In the DSS acute model, ob/ob mice exhibited a 72% reduction of colitis severity and sp…

Recognition by familiarity is preserved in Parkinson's without dementia and Lewy-Body disease.

2010

Objective The retrieval deficit hypothesis states that the lack of deficit in recognition often observed in patients with Parkinson's disease is because of the low retrieval requirements of the task, given that these patients have retrieval and not encoding deficits. To test this hypothesis we investigated recognition memory by familiarity in Parkinson's patients and in patients with Lewy Bodies disease and Parkinson with dementia. Method We analyzed to what extent the experimental groups were able to recognize by familiarity in a typical yes/no recognition memory task. The experimental groups were patients with early nondemented Parkinson's disease, advanced nondemented Parkinson's disease…

Análisis de la producción y el consumo de información en los artículos españoles sobre bibliometría

1996

We analyze Spanish production of papers on bibliometrics published in Spanish scientific journals and the use of information through the method of bibliographic reference analysis. Publications have been obtained from IME, ICYT and ISOC databases. The number of papers was 101 , with 1848 citations. The most important citations are to journal articles and Spanish publications, but Scientometrics is the most cited journal. Results seem to show that bibliometrics is a young discipline in our country, with an important role of classic authors. Difficulties of access to foreign bibliography produce a high use of Spanish publications. Medicine and Psychology are the most influe…

Efficacy of intra-arterial lidocaine infusion in the treatment of cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis

2020

Background Disturbances in pancreatic microcirculation, beginning with vasoconstriction, are crucial in early pancreatitis and progression to necrotizing pancreatitis. Thus, vascular-targeted treatment aiming to restore a sufficient level of microcirculation through vasodilation would possibly reduce the severity of pancreatitis. Lidocaine is an anti-arrhythmic and local anesthetic drug, which also acts as a vasodilator at higher concentrations. Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of intra-arterial infusion of lidocaine into the celiac trunk in treatment of cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis. Material and methods Wistar rats (n = 20) were randomly divided into 2 equal groups: the control g…

Light intensity preference of juvenile pikeperch Sander lucioperca (L.)

2006

Light intensity preference of the pikeperch was tested in 1-m2 tanks divided into four lateral compartments with a hole in the middle to allow the fish to move between compartments. Two experiments were carried out with both 0+ and 1+ pikeperch: one testing intensities from 25 to 300 lx and the other from 1 to 50 lx. Light preference was observed individually for 5 days at 8, 11, 14 and 17 h. On the first and fifth day, the preference was tested without differences in light intensity (control). In both experiments, both age groups showed preference for the lowest available light intensity. Preference for low light intensity in pikeperch may be related to innate activity and feeding behaviou…

EU dissemination of the provisional ultra-low-temperature scale, PLTS-2000

2003

Following the introduction of the provisional low-temperature scale from 0.9 mK to 1K, PLTS-2000, there is a need for primary and secondary thermometers and fixed points, which can disseminate the scale to users. This paper reports on the progress, within the EU collaborative project ‘ULT Dissemination’, in the development and evaluation of several devices with associated instrumentation. Principal among them are a current-sensing noise thermometer, a CMN thermometer adapted for industrial use, a Coulomb blockade thermometer, a second-sound thermometer, a 3He melting pressure thermometer for a direct realisation of the PLTS-2000. A superconductive reference device has also been developed, a…

Learner Perspective on English Pronunciation Teaching in an EFL Context

2013

This paper reports on an interview study with EFL learners that aimed to explore learners’ perceptions and views on English pronunciation teaching. The participants of the present study were ten EFL learners studying in the public educational system of Finland. Six of the participants were pupils attending basic education class nine, i.e. 15- to 16-year-old lower secondary level pupils. Two were primary level pupils attending basic education class four (aged 10), and two were upper secondary school pupils (aged 18). The interviews were thematic, and the learners were encouraged to speak freely about the English pronunciation teaching they were receiving and their opinions on this. In additi…

On-line polylogues and impoliteness: The case of postings sent in response to the Obama Reggaeton YouTube video

2011

Abstract The overall aim of this paper is to investigate impoliteness in a particular on-line polylogal setting – YouTube postings (c. 13,000 words) triggered by the ‘Obama Reggaeton’ video, which was released during the 2008 US democratic primaries. This is done through integration of quantitative/qualitative analytic tools and of (im)politeness1 and (im)politeness 2 approaches. A two-prong experimental study is used in order to examine impoliteness realisation and interpretation in the corpus. Findings reveal clear patterns in the realisation of impoliteness strategies, including a preference for on-record impoliteness saliently oriented towards attacking the positive face needs of one's …

Interaction of Language Policy and Assessment in Finland

2008

This paper reviews developments and future challenges in language policy, planning and assessment in Finland, where several important changes in legislation, curricula and assessment systems have recently taken place. Language proficiency requirement of immigrants and civil servants have been redefined, school curricula have been revised and new language examinations have been developed. The Common European Framework has been particularly influential. The paper also explores the tensions caused by changes, such as uncertainties in implementing new curricula in teaching and assessment, and differences between curricula and national examinations. The gate-keeping function of examinations also…
