Political participation in Latvia 1987–2001

2001

Abstract Political participation is crucial to democracy; we discuss its main features during three stages. The years 1988–91 are marked by anti-regime mobilization and extensive mass activism in support for restoring independence. After a “normalizing” phase between 1992–98 we note contradictory trends in more recent years. Next to conventional political participation one notes increasing protests, referendum initiatives, and corrupt ways of gaining influence.

The nested games of the UK’s EU referendum: ruptures, reconfigurations and lessons for Europe

2021

The 2016 decision by the United Kingdom to withdraw from the European Union was a seminal one for both parties. In this special issue, we consider the extent to which the inter-penetration of the national and the European arenas produced significant opportunities for recasting political action. The nesting of these two levels matters firstly in allowing for the politicisation and mobilisation of domestic actors around European issues and secondly in explaining why seemingly sub-optimal or counter-productive actions are taken. The tensions this generated reached a critical juncture with the referendum, a rupture that highlights the extent to which a nominally second-order vote can have funda…

Exploring Differentiated Disintegration in a Post-Brexit European Union

2019

In the aftermath of the British referendum to leave the European Union and the European Commission's ‘White Paper on the Future of Europe’, it is not only time to take stock of the existing literature on differentiated integration, but also to rethink the perimeters of disintegration. We argue that phenomena such as Brexit embrace forms of differentiation which trigger the need for conceptualizing differentiated disintegration altogether. This article first sketches the path of the scholarly debate in a chronological way to grasp the breadth of existing literature. Second, it discusses differentiated disintegration as a potentially new area for research. Mapping several scenarios for future…

Brexit: przyczyny oraz potencjalne konsekwencje wyjścia Wielkiej Brytanii z Unii Europejskiej

2017

In the referendum of 23 June 2016, the 51.89% majority of the British who decided to vote opted for the exit ol their country from the European Union. This paper presents the main threads in the debate concerning, on the one hand, the reasons for Brexit and, on the othe r hand, its potential consequences for the United Kingdom and the EU. The vote for Brexit was determined by long-term factors (the specific character of the country’s political and economic systems) as well as short-term ones (the rising wave of immigration and the erroneous assumptions in the strategy of the pro-Europe camp). The main factor determining the scale of Brexit’s consequences will be the result of negotiations, …

Bring the state (information) in: Campaign dynamics in the run-up to a German referendum

2015

This article analyses exposure to different sources of campaign information, and their effects on citizens' feeling of being informed about referendums. The analysis is based on an innovative rolling panel study that allows for a rigorous tracking of campaign dynamics in the run-up to the referendum. Using a referendum on a large-scale infrastructure project in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, empirical findings show that official information provided by the government had the greatest effect in reaching citizens and also had the strongest impact on their feeling of being informed. The article demonstrates that the state plays a crucial role in providing an appropriate information env…

Apvienotās Karalistes izstāšanās no Eiropas Savienības tiesiskā procedūra

2016

Dalībvalstu tiesības izstāties no Eiropas Savienības (ES) nostiprinātas Līguma par Eiropas Savienību 50. pantā, kurā noteikta izstāšanās tiesiskā procedūra. Uz šī pētījuma veikšanas brīdi neviena no Eiropas Savienības dalībvalstīm nav realizējusi pantā piešķirtās izstāšanās tiesības, tāpēc nepastāv izstāšanās prakse. ES tiesību normās noteiktais izstāšanās procesuālais regulējums nav gana detalizēts, lai dalībvalstis varētu paredzēt izstāšanās procesa gaitu, tāpēc izstāšanās process pakļauj izstāties gribošo valsti neizpētītiem riskiem un neparedzamām tiesiskajām sekām. Pētnieciskajā darbā analizēta ES dalībvalstu izstāšanās no ES tiesiskā procedūra, padziļināti analizējot Apvienotās Karali…

Brexit ietekme uz Eiropas Savienību

2017

The Approach of the Catalan Political Scene to Independence Issues

2016

The political situation in Catalonia during the last months is changing almost daily. Catalan nationalist movements consistently continue their efforts to create an independent state. As a result, every vote – an unofficial plebiscite, local elections or elections to the Catalan parliament – is treated like a referendum on the matter of independence. The Catalan actions that are ever more faster and further-reaching meet with a growing opposition of the central government, threatening the Catalan authorities with a number of sanctions in case of taking further, concrete steps to break away from Spain. Although, from the outside, the Catalan independence parties seem to be a monolith, the si…

Politiskās krīzes izpēte: Katalonijas gadījums

2018

Darbs piedāvā iepazīt krīžu dažādību, krīzes dzīves ciklu no teorētiskā aspekta. Savukārt darba empīriskajā daļā caur izvēlēto teoriju prizmu tiek apskatīta Katalonijas krīze un šīs krīzes dzīves cikls. Uzmanība tiek pievērsta nesaskaņu vēsturiskajai izcelsmei, cēloņiem, iesaistītajām pusēm, krīzes vadībai un vadītājiem. Lai to varētu pilnvērt…
