Detecting crop irrigation status in orchard canopies with airborne and ASTER thermal imagery
2007
This work provides a description of the research conducted to assess if ASTER satellite data enable the detection of the water status in orchard tree crops. Summer and winter TERRA-ASTER images were acquired over a study area of Seville in southern Spain over a 6-year period. 1076 olive orchards were monitored in this area, obtaining field location, area, tree density, and irrigation status information. Surface temperature images were obtained using the TES method and 0.5 m resolution panchromatic ortho-rectified imagery collected over the entire area to obtain vegetation cover. A comparison study of the temperature difference between orchards under different irrigation schemes is presented…
Structural properties of phosphatidylcholine in a monolayer at the air/water interface
1991
Neutron reflectivities of phosphatidylcholine monolayers in the liquid condensed (LC) phase on ultrapure H 2 O and D 2 O subphases have been measured on a Langmuir film balance. Using a dedicated liquid surface reflectometer, reflectivities down to R = 10 -6 in the momentum transfer range Q z = 0–0.4A -1 were accessed. In a new approach, by refining neutron reflectivity data from chain-perdeuterated DPPC-d 62 in combination with x-ray measurements on the same monolayer under similar conditions it is shown that the two techniques mutually complement one another. This analysis leads to a detailed conception of the interface structure. It is found that in the LC phase (which is analogous to th…
Size-dependent alignment of Fe nanoparticles upon deposition onto W(110)
2010
Using in situ electron diffraction we study the orientation of mass-selected iron nanoparticles upon deposition onto single crystalline W(110) at room temperature. It is found that particles with a diameter below about 4 nm and a kinetic energy $\ensuremath{\le}0.1$ electron volt per atom spontaneously align with respect to the substrate. Larger particles preferentially rest with their (001) and (110) facets parallel to the surface, but do not show further alignment. The data may hint at thermally activated dislocation motions upon the impact on the substrate which are responsible for the observed orientation below 4 nm. By this uniformly oriented monodisperse nanostructures can be prepared…
2,5-Bis[(E)-2-phenylethenyl]-3,6-bis(pyridin-2-yl)pyrazine
2020
The molecule of the title compound, C30H22N4, exhibits inversion symmetry adopting the shape of a St Andrew's Cross. It shows dihedral angles between adjacent aryl units of around 50° whereas torsion angles of ca 10° are found along the arylene vinylene path.
Old Gibellina: the map, the world, the Aleph
2019
The present contribution intends to propose an epistemological reflection on the links and relationships that interweave the map, cultural heritage, landscape and places. I have identified an interpretative horizon that intersects the scientific geographic debate with the literary subject and proposed a specific reading of the site of Old Gibellina in Sicily, Italy, where reality and representation seem to converge. In 1968, Gibellina was razed to the ground by an earthquake. Then the site of Old Gibellina was covered by the ‘Grande Cretto’: the work of Land Art made by the artist Alberto Burri. In my perspective, the Cretto represents a unique place: it is a full-size map, it is landscape…
Jews under Islam in early modern Morocco in travel chronicles
2020
This paper addresses the relationship between the ideological and legal structures that discriminated against Jews in early modern Morocco and its reflection in social practices. The study shows th...
Industrial Environment Mapping Using Distributed Static 3D Sensor Nodes
2018
This paper presents a system architecture for mapping and real-time monitoring of a relatively large industrial robotic environment of size 10 m × 15 m × 5 m. Six sensor nodes with embedded computing power and local processing of the 3D point clouds are placed close to the ceiling. The system architecture and data processing is based on the Robot Operating System (ROS) and the Point Cloud Library (PCL). The 3D sensors used are the Microsoft Kinect for Xbox One and point cloud data is collected at 20 Hz. A new manual calibration procedure is developed using reflective planes. The specified range of the used sensor is 0.8 m to 4.2 m, while depth data up to 9 m is used in this paper. Despite t…
Determination of quality parameters of beers by the use of attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
2005
Abstract The estimation of important quality parameters of beers, such as original and real extracts and alcohol content, has been evaluated by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) using a partial least square (PLS) calibration approach. Two sample populations, one consisting of 24 samples and other of 21 samples, obtained from the Spanish market and covering different types of beer were used. The first set was used for building and validating the model, whereas the second, measured 6 months after, was used for evaluating its robustness. The spectral range and the size of the calibration set and its suitability for building the PLS model have been …
Analyzing the anisotropy of thermal infrared emissivity over arid regions using a new MODIS land surface temperature and emissivity product (MOD21)
2015
Abstract The MOD21 Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (LST&E) product will be included in forthcoming Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Collection 6. Surface temperature and emissivities for thermal bands 29 (8.55 μm), 31 (11 μm) and 32 (12 μm) will be retrieved using the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Temperature and Emissivity Separation (TES) method adapted to MODIS at-sensor spectral radiances, previously corrected with the Water Vapor Scaling method (MOD21 algorithm). We simulated MOD21 product estimates over two different sandy deserts (i.e. White Sands and Great Sands) using a series of MODIS scenes from 2010 to 2013. T…
Preliminary studies about thermal degradation of edible oils through attenuated total reflectance mid-infrared spectrometry
2009
Abstract Degradation of edible oils during their heating process has been evaluated through the determination of cis -unsaturation and trans -fatty acids together with free fatty acids as a function of time and temperature heating. Two types of cooking oils, sunflower and seed (mixture of different seeds non-detailed), were heated at three different temperatures (147, 171 and 189 °C) during a total time of 1920 min (32 h) shared out in four sessions of 8 h each one, and samples were studied from their spectra obtained by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry using attenuated total reflectance measurements. A critical comparison between different multivariate calibration models built based…
