Cylindrical Cell-Based Refractometers to Analyse Biomedical Liquids

2015

Compact device of high sensitivity for measurement of the refractive indices of both stationary and flowing liquids has been developed. This device can be used to analyse a variety of biomedical liquids: urine, serum protein. The refractive index (RI) is determined by measuring the deviation of a laser beam passing through a cylindrical cell containing the test liquid. In order to significantly improve the resolution and stability of RI measurements, the repeated reflections and refractions of the light beam travelling through the cylindrical cell are employed.

Thermal imaging in artificial nonlinear media

1997

A method has been developed to determine the temperature distribution of ferroelectric surfaces and volumes. Based on the nonlinear optical effect of second harmonic generation (SHG) in highly nonlinear ferroelectric coating, demonstration of 2D thermosensing has been performed in the wide temperature range (77 K - 600 K). Physical concept of SHG thermal imaging, design of thermosensitive coating and experimental verification of the method has been discussed.

Compact acousto-optic multimode interference device in (Al,Ga)As.

2020

Multimode interference (MMI) devices are key components in modern integrated photonic circuits. Here, we present acoustically tuned optical switches on an (Al,Ga)As platform that enable robust, compact and fast response systems improving on recently demonstrated technology. The device consists of a 2 × 2 MMI device fine-tuned in its center region by a focused surface acoustic wave (SAW) beam working in the low GHz range. In this way, we can tune the refractive index profile over a narrow modulation region and thus control the optical switching behaviour via the applied SAW intensity. Direct tuning of the MMI device avoids losses and phase errors inherent to arrayed waveguide based switches,…

Differential method for modeling dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides

2008

This paper demonstrates the efficiency of the differential method, a conventional grating theory, to investigate dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs), known to be a potential solution for optical interconnects. The method is used to obtain the mode effective indices (both real and imaginary parts) and the mode profiles. The results obtained with the differential method are found to be in good agreement with those provided by the effective index method or finite elements. The versatility of the differential method is demonstrated by considering complex configurations such as trapezoidal waveguides or DLSPPWs lying on a finite width metal stripe.

Plasmonic Silver Nanorod Sensitivity: Experiment and Simple Theoretical Treatment

2013

We compare the plasmonic sensitivity of silver and gold nanorods with similar resonance wavelengths by monitoring the plasmon resonance shift of single noble metal nanorods upon changing the environment from water to sucrose solution. We find that silver nanorods have 1.2 to 2 times higher sensitivity than gold in good agreement with simulations based on the boundary-elements-method (BEM). To exclude the effect of particle volume on sensitivity, we test gold rods with increasing particle width at a given resonance wavelength. Using the Drude-model of optical properties of metal together with the quasi-static approximation (QSA) for localized surface plas-mons, we show that the dominant cont…

All-optical and electro-optical active plasmonic telecom components

2011

Active plasmonics is an attractive emerging field in which the ability to control the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation finds many applications such as realization of fully functional integrated photonic circuitry. We demonstrate both numerically and experimentally switching of the SPP transmission based on two different approaches namely the all-optical and electro-optical at telecom wavelengths. The plasmonic component consists of a compact and efficient SPP switch utilizing highly sensitive ring resonator which has high sensitivity to the refractive index changes. Fabrication was done via e-beam lithography utilizing advanced proximity corrections. The compenents were character…

Functionalized planar Bragg grating sensor for the detection of BTX in solvent vapor

2012

We report on an optical planar Bragg grating evanescent wave refractive index sensor functionalized by a simple method against aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) in solvent vapor. To functionalize the sensor against BTX, substituted cyclodextrins are applied to the sensor surface using dip coating. Cyclodextrins have a hydrophobic cavity, which favors the accommodation of an organic molecule of appropriate dimensions leading to a non-covalent inclusion complex. The temporal sensor response reveals a multi-exponential rise towards an equilibrium state, whose level is found to be linearly related to the exposed analyte concentration. Taking into account the spectr…

Opto-thermally controlled beam steering in nonlinear all-dielectric metastructures

2021

Reconfigurable metasurfaces have recently gained a lot of attention in applications such as adaptive meta-lenses, hyperspectral imaging and optical modulation. This kind of metastructure can be obtained by an external control signal, enabling us to dynamically manipulate the electromagnetic radiation. Here, we theoretically propose an AlGaAs device to control the second harmonic generation (SHG) emission at nanoscale upon optimized optical heating. The asymmetric shape of the used meta-atom is selected to guarantee a predominant second harmonic (SH) emission towards the normal direction. The proposed structure is concurrently excited by a pump beam at a fundamental wavelength of 1540 nm and…

Modulation of coaxial modal interferometers based on long period gratings in double cladding fibers

2009

This paper reports on the dynamic modulation of coaxial interferometers based on two cascaded long period gratings written in double cladding fibers. The interferometer is modulated by a piezoelectric ceramic which stretches one the gratings at tens of kHz, the output light is intensity modulated with an efficiency of 97 %. The device operates at 1530nm, has more than 50nm bandwidth, insertion loss of 0.4 dB and a temperature drift of 0.11 nm/ degrees C.
