Composite Thin Film by Hydrogen-Bonding Assembly of Polymer Brush and Poly(vinylpyrrolidone)
2005
Based on hydrogen-bonding layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly in aqueous solution, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVPON) and a spherical polymer brush with a poly(methylsilsesquioxane) (PSQ) core and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hair chains were used to fabricate composite multilayer thin films. Hydrogen bonding as the driving force was confirmed by FT-IR spectrometry. A simple method (Filmetric F20) was introduced to determine the thickness and refractive index of the films. The film thickness was found to be a linear function of the number of bilayers. The average increase in thickness per bilayer is 28.3 nm. The film morphology was characterized with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microsco…
Description of atmospheric conditions at the Pierre Auger Observatory using the Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS)
2012
Atmospheric conditions at the site of a cosmic ray observatory must be known for reconstructing observed extensive air showers. The Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS) is a global atmospheric model predicated on meteorological measurements and numerical weather predictions. GDAS provides altitude-dependent profiles of the main state variables of the atmosphere like temperature, pressure, and humidity. The original data and their application to the air shower reconstruction of the Pierre Auger Observatory are described. By comparisons with radiosonde and weather station measurements obtained on-site in Malargüe and averaged monthly models, the utility of the GDAS data is shown.
Heating rate profiles and radiative forcing due to a dust storm in the Western Mediterranean using satellite observations
2017
Abstract We analyze the vertically-resolved radiative impact due to a dust storm in the Western Mediterranean. The dust plume travels around 3–5 km altitude and the aerosol optical depth derived by MODIS at 550 nm ranges from 0.33 to 0.52 at the overpass time (13:05 UT). The aerosol radiative forcing (ARF), forcing efficiency (FE) and heating rate profile (AHR) are determined throughout the dust trajectory in shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) ranges. To do this, we integrate different satellite observations (CALIPSO and MODIS) and detailed radiative transfer modeling. The combined (SW + LW) effect of the dust event induces a net cooling in the studied region. On average, the FE at 22.4° sola…
The optical constants of atmospheric aerosol particles in the 7.5–12 ?m spectral region
2011
Thin films of atmospheric aerosol particles which have been collected by an automatic jet impactor are used to obtain the real and imaginary part of the mean complex refractive index of aerosol particles of various types in the 7.5–12 ?m spectral region. A dispersion analysis of the measured ir-spectra of absorption of the particle films is performed. By applying the Lorentz theory of continuous dielectrics to the particle films a mathematical relation between the optical constants of the particle films and those of the aerosol particles themselves is obtained. The resulting complex refractive indices are applied to Mie computations to indicate the importance of scattering and absorbing aer…
The real part of the mean complex refractive index and the mean density of samples of atmospheric aerosol particles
1968
The computation and the physical explanation of the spectral extinction of light in the atmosphere are mainly influenced by some specific prerequisites such as the number and the size of the atmospheric aerosol particles as well as their complex refractive index. Both size and complex refractive index are functions of the relative humidity. During the last years quite a number of investigations into the size distribution of the atmospheric aerosol particles have been carried out. Their refractive index, however is hardly known. An attempt has been made to overcome this deficiency with a new quantitative method for the simultaneous measurement of the real part of the mean complex refractive …
Comparison of AERONET and SKYRAD4.2 inversion products retrieved from a Cimel CE318 sunphotometer
2012
SKYNET is an international research network of ground based sky – sunphotometers for the observation and monitoring of columnar aerosol properties. The algorithm developed by SKYNET is called SKYRAD.pack, and it is used on Prede instruments only. In this study, we have modified the SKYRAD.pack software in order to adapt it to Cimel sunphotometers. A one month database of Cimel data obtained at Burjassot (Valencia, Spain) has been processed with this program and the obtained inversion products have been compared with AERONET retrievals. In general, the differences found were consistent with the individual error assessments for both algorithms. Although the aerosol optical depth com…
A study on the sensitivities of simulated aerosol optical properties to composition and size distribution using airborne measurements
2014
We present a flexible framework to calculate the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols at a given relative humidity based on their composition and size distribution. The similarity of this framework to climate model parameterisations allows rapid and extensive sensitivity tests of the impact of uncertainties in data or of new measurements on climate relevant aerosol properties. The data collected by the FAAM BAe-146 aircraft during the EUCAARI-LONGREX and VOCALS-REx campaigns have been used in a closure study to analyse the agreement between calculated and measured aerosol optical properties for two very different aerosol types. The agreement achieved for the EUCAARI-LONGREX flights is…
Size distribution, mass concentration, chemical and mineralogical composition and derived optical parameters of the boundary layer aerosol at Tinfou,…
2009
During the SAMUM 2006 field campaign in southern Morocco, physical and chemical properties of desert aerosols were measured. Mass concentrations ranging from 30 Ã¼g m-3 for PM2.5 under desert background conditions up to 300,000 Ã¼g m-3 for total suspended particles (TSP) during moderate dust storms were measured. TSP dust concentrations are correlated with the local wind speed, whereas PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations are determined by advection from distant sources. Size distributions were measured for particles between 20 nm and 500 Ã¼m diameter (parameterizations are given). Two major regimes of the size spectrum can be distinguished. Smaller than 500 nm particle diameter, the distrib…
Saharan dust absorption and refractive index from aircraft-based observations during SAMUM 2006
2009
During the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM) conducted in summer 2006 in southeast Morocco, the complex refractive index of desert dust was determined from airborne measurements of particle size distributions and aerosol absorption coefficients at three different wavelengths in the blue (467 nm), green (530 nm) and red (660 nm) spectral regions. The vertical structure of the dust layers was analysed by an airborne high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL). The origin of the investigated dust layers was estimated from trajectory analyses, combined with Meteosat 2nd Generation (MSG) scenes and wind field data analyses. The real part n of the dust refractive index was found almost constant w…
Er:Cr:YSGG laser with electrooptic PLZT ceramics Q-switching Fabry-Perot interferometer output mirror
2001
Summary form only given. Q-switching of Er:Cr:YSGG laser with transparent PLZT ceramics electro-optic modulators was reported previously. The extremely large quadratic EO effect in PLZT allows to build small size moderate control voltages. The high induced birefringence in PLZT results from an essential contribution to polarization (and consequently to the birefringence) of processes with longer relaxation times up to seconds, corresponding to the Er:Cr:YSGG laser operating rate. PLZT ceramics have also a high value of the refractive index (n /spl ap/ 2.2-2.3 for /spl lambda/ = 3 /spl mu/m, slightly depending on PLZT composition and temperature) and thus considerable Fresnel reflections R/s…
