Blue Moon: Is This a Property of Background Aerosol?

Stellar extinction measurements made at three astronomical observatories showed that on ~50% of the nights the extinction due to aerosol light scattering increased rather than decreased with increasing wavelength (anomalous extinction) for wavelengths close to 500 nm. This extinction behavior is analyzed in this paper and limits are established for the aerosol characteristics necessary for this phenomenon to exist, including geometric standard deviations, imaginary part of refractive index, mean radius, and gaseous NO(2).

Absorbing anisotropic and gyrotropic slab between crossed polarizers in parallel light

When a birefringent slab is rotated between two crossed polarizers, the four maxima and four minima of the transmitted intensity occur, as known, at every π/4 radians. If the slab is also optically active, the maxima and minima are arranged in other patterns that may be grouped according to the number of extrema met in one complete turn of the slab: four or eight. All the possible patterns are classified and each is related to some peculiarity of the complex refractive index of the slab.

Bistable phase locking of a nonlinear optical cavity via rocking: Transmuting vortices into phase patterns.

We report experimental observation of the conversion of a phase-invariant nonlinear system into a phase-locked one via the mechanism of rocking [G. J. de Valcarcel and K. Staliunas, Phys. Rev. E 67, 026604 (2003)]. This conversion results in that vortices of the phase-invariant system are being replaced by phase patterns such as domain walls. The experiment is carried out on a photorefractive oscillator in two-wave mixing configuration.A model for the experimental device is given that reproduces the observed behavior.

Experimental demonstration of bistable phase locking in a photorefractive oscillator

We report experimental evidence of bistable phase locking in nonlinear optics, in particular, in a photorefractive oscillator emitting in few transverse modes. Bistable phase locking is a recently proposed method for converting a laserlike system, which is phase invariant, into a phase-bistable one by injecting a suitable spatially modulated monochromatic beam, resonant with the laser emission, into the optical cavity. Universal description of pattern formation in optical oscillators under bichromatic injection

We study pattern formation in a complex Swift–Hohenberg equation with phase-sensitive (parametric) gain. Such an equation serves as a universal order parameter equation describing the onset of spontaneous oscillations in extended systems submitted to a bichromatic injection when the instability is toward long (transverse) wavelengths. Applications include two-level lasers and photorefractive oscillators. Under such an injection, the original continuous phase symmetry of the system is replaced by a discrete one and phase bistability emerges. Multivalued solutions for the output intensity of a semilinear photorefractive oscillator and stability analysis

The analysis of pump-ratio dependences of the output intensity for a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator reveals two domains of multivalued solutions for sufficiently large coupling strength ensured by the crystal. We show that even in a strictly degenerate case the nonzero output intensity can be reached in a broad range of pump ratios r from 10−6 to infinity, including the interval where both pump intensities coincide or are very close to each other. Controlled Observation of a Nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch Transition in a Nonlinear Optical Cavity

We describe the controlled observation of the nonequilibrium Ising-Bloch transition in a broad area nonlinear optical cavity, namely, a quasi-1D single longitudinal-mode photorefractive oscilator in a degenerate four-wave mixing configuration. Our experimental technique allows for the controlled injection of the domain walls. We use cavity detuning as control parameter and find that both Ising and Bloch walls can exist for the same detuning values within a certain interval of detunings, i.e., the Ising-Bloch transition is hysteretic in our case. A complex Ginzburg-Landau model is used for supporting the observations.

Modeling of the photorefractive nonlinear response in Sn_2P_2S_6 crystals

We develop a theory of the photorefractive nonlinear response for Sn2P2S6 crystals. The theory incorporates two types of charge carrier (optically active and passive), provides explicit expressions for the characteristic buildup-relaxation rates and gain factors, explains naturally a big variety of accumulated experimental data, and facilitates characterization-optimization of this important nonlinear material.

Role of dispersion on zero-average-index bandgaps

We consider periodic multilayers combining ordinary positive index materials and dispersive metamaterials with negative index in some frequency ranges. These structures can exhibit photonic bandgaps which, in contrast with the usual Bragg gaps, are not based on interference mechanisms. Changing the dispersion models for the constituent metamaterial, we investigate its role in the production of zero-average-index bandgaps. In particular, we show the effect of each constitutive parameter on both bandgap edges. Slow light with photorefractive four-wave mixing

A slowing down of light pulses using backward-wave four-wave mixing is achieved in photorefractive crystals with different coupling strength. The delay and width of the output pulse are studied as a function of the input pulse width and pump intensity ratio for the amplified transmitted beam and for the phase-conjugated beam. The delay characteristics are compared with those of the two-beam coupling. It is demonstrated that the four-wave mixing process ensures a larger slowing down of short pulses (pulses with width shorter than the photorefractive response time) as compared to the photorefractive two-beam coupling scheme and guarantees the elimination of forerunners.
