Nowhere Home: The Waiting of Vulnerable Child Refugees

In her 2012 documentary Nowhere Home, filmmaker Margreth Olin sheds light on the vulnerabilities and injurabilities of child migrants subjected to prolonged waiting. The documentary shows unaccompanied minors being offered only temporary residence and thus identifies why these irregular migrants can be characterized as ‘particularly vulnerable’ by having their childhoods put on hold. Although the concept is contested, I conceive vulnerability as based on humans’ existential precondition in terms of something bodily and enabling. Maisterintutkielmassani tarkastelen, miten turvapaikanhakijoiden auttaminen rakentuu diskursiivisesti Facebookissa Refugees Welcome Keski-Suomi -sivulla. Euroopan pakolaiskriisin myötä Suomeen saapui viime vuonna yli 30 000 turvapaikanhakijaa, mikä synnytti kansalaisten keskuudessa auttamishalun, jollaista ei ole aikaisemmin Suomen mittakaavassa nähty. Tarkastelemani Facebook -sivu perustettiin turvapaikanhakijoiden auttamisen koordinoimiseksi. While the overwhelming majority of integrated threat studies have been conducted from the point of view of the dominant culture, and a few from the point of view of an immigrant or minority’s perspective, none have explored threat from the point of view of a refugee. Refugees and migrants in times of COVID-19: mapping trends of public health and migration policies and practices

Refugees and migrants have been disproportionately affected by both the direct effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictive migration measures put in place, which, in turn, have hampered coordinated and consistent public health responses. This report maps how the needs of refugee and migrant have been addressed in COVID-19 responses across countries and how these have varied considerably from inclusive policies to discriminatory practices. Throughout recorded history, humans have crossed national borders to seek safety in nearby countries. The reasons for displacement have been generated by phenomena of terrestrial origin, but exposure to unexpected extra-terrestrial threats poses a different scenario. An asteroid impact warning implies a change of paradigm which would represent a historic precedent.
