"It's not about the passport" : the perception of Finnish citizens with a foreign background in the wake of the Refugee Crisis

2017

This study examines whether the perception of Finnish citizens with a foreign background has changed in the wake of the refugee crisis. To analyse the situation, focus groups with a total of 18 participants with both Finnish citizenship and a foreign background were conducted to establish whether they felt the treatment towards them had changed over the last years. Berry’s model of acculturation and the Interactive Acculturation Model by Bourhis et al. were used to analyse the results and explain acculturation strategies and orientations. The study resulted in two key findings: Finnish citizens with a migration background felt that the perception towards them had changed, but this did not i…

Policy Makers', NGO, and Healthcare Workers' Accounts of Migrants' and Refugees' Healthcare Access Across Europe : Human Rights and Citizenship Based…

2020

Freely available healthcare, universally accessible to the population of citizens, is a key ideal for European welfare systems. As labor migration of the twentieth century gave way to the globalized streams of the twenty-first century, new challenges to fulfilling these ideals have emerged. The principle of freedom of movement, together with large-scale forced migration have led to large scale movements of people, making new demands on European healthcare systems which had previously been largely focused on meeting sedentary local populations' needs. Drawing on interviews with service providers working for NGOs and public healthcare systems and with policy makers across 10 European countrie…

El futuro del derecho como lucha contra la idolatría tecnológica

2019

The main challenge that Law will have to face in the near future is the defense of human being against the uncontrolled power of technology in different spheres: ecology versus the becoming of a new geological age: the Anthropocene; the finances, versus speculation and taxes fraud; biolaw, versus the transhumanist challenge; the rights to privacy and no manipulation versus GAF( Google, Amazon, Facebook).

Small agency and precarious residency in Afghan refugee families

2020

This chapter examines agency and ways of enduring suffering in Afghan families in a small Finnish town. Three stories, where the mothers and children have lived in Finland for some years already, but the fathers have arrived during the 2015 large-scale migration, are presented and analysed. Ethnographic methods are used in enquiring how family members endure suffering when they are faced with the threat of deportation of a family member. Our results show that fathers’ precarious residency has an impact on family members’ agency. First, the informants were enduring alone, and thus the social element, being able to share one’s struggles of enduring, was missing. Second, it was not only one ty…

Aikuisten turvapaikanhakija- ja pakolaisasiakkaiden terapeuttisissa keskusteluissa kuvaamat hyödylliset muutokset

2018

Missing a lot of this world : formal education and political competition in Iraq through a Yezidi lens

2017

This thesis examines Yezidi perceptions of access to formal education for Yezidi children and youth from the Sinjar region of Iraq, a primary homeland of the Yezidi people and an officially disputed territory between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government of Iraq in Baghdad, between the periods of 2003–2014 and 2014 onwards. These two time frames are selected and differentiated to reflect two major events in the recent history of Sinjar – the downfall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003 and subsequent de facto control of Sinjar by the KRG, and the seizing of the area by the Islamic State (IS) group and subsequent displacement of the majority of the Yezidi communit…
