Invasive cervical cancer during pregnancy: laparoscopic nodal evaluation before oncologic treatment delay

2010

Introduction. Cervical cancer is the most frequently encountered malignancy during pregnancy. Presence of nodal metastasis is the most important negative prognostic factor and its assessment represents a crucial parameter to decide if pregnancy can safely continue. We describe the results of 18 pregnant patients with cervical cancer who had their nodal status proved by means of laparoscopy. Material and methods. Eighteen patients with cervical cancer who underwent laparoscopic pelvic lymphadenectomy during pregnancy at Charit-University Berlin and Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena between 1999 and 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. Results. The mean age at diagnosis was 32 years (26-40) a…

Intermittent Horner's syndrome on alternate sides: a hint for locating spinal lesions.

1980

A patient with a cervical intramedullary ependymoma is described who exhibited a Horner's syndrome on alternate sides. Pharmacological study demonstrated damage to the pre-ganglionic sympathetic neurons. Disregarding cases with the Shy-Drager syndrome, three comparable case reports have been found in the literature where the fluctuating expression of Horner's syndrome, alternating from one side to the other, was attributable to a lesion of the cervical spinal cord. In contrast to the present patient, the pharmacological responses of these patients indicated a lesion of the central sympathetic pathway.

A Major Effect Gene Controlling Development and Pathogenicity in Botrytis cinerea Identified Through Genetic Analysis of Natural Mycelial Non-pathoge…

2021

Botrytis cinerea is a necrotrophic plant pathogenic fungus with a wide host range. Its natural populations are phenotypically and genetically very diverse. A survey of B. cinerea isolates causing gray mold in the vineyards of Castilla y León, Spain, was carried out and as a result eight non-pathogenic natural variants were identified. Phenotypically these isolates belong to two groups. The first group consists of seven isolates displaying a characteristic mycelial morphotype, which do not sporulate and is unable to produce sclerotia. The second group includes one isolate, which sporulates profusely and does not produce sclerotia. All of them are unresponsive to light. Crosses between a repr…

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF DIFFERENT POPULATIONS OF OREGANO (ORIGANUM VULGARE SSP. HIRTUM) FOUND IN SICILY

2012

Oregano (Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum) is one of the most popular aromatic species used in Mediterranean cuisine. In addition to its use for culinary and ornamental purposes, it is also known as a medicinal plant for its antispasmodic, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and expectorant properties. A number of wild oregano populations were found in various areas of Sicily. Representative samples of the different populations at flowering stage were collected at varying altitudes between 60 and 1000 m a.s.l. in 2004 an 2005. The samples were processed to evaluate the quantity and quality of the production, as well as the essential oil composition. Significant differences were found between…

The negotiation of rules and state intervention in irrigation management: The Júcar Canal in the mid-19th century

2012

The way the rules for distributing water work in irrigation communities has been the object of numerous studies. Yet, little is known about how the negotiation process that is required to design such rules has developed historically, which is what this article focuses on. Specifically, the case of the Júcar Canal, which was built in the 13th century and went on to become the largest irrigation system in Spain after undergoing an extension in the early 19th century. As a result of said extension, there were many clashes between the old and the new irrigators, the climate of cooperation between users diminished and it became necessary to draw up a new set of regulations. Two crucial factors a…

Nitric oxide synthase neurons in the rodent spinal cord: distribution, relation to Substance P fibers, and effects of dorsal rhizotomy.

2001

The indirect immunofluorescent method was employed to investigate the distribution of neuronal nitric oxide synthase-like immunoreactivity(nNOS-LI) in the spinal cord of the golden hamster and to compare it to data obtained from rats. Immunoreactive neurons were found throughout the cervico-sacral extent in the dorsal horn (mainly in laminae I-III) and in the preganglionic autonomic regions, i.e., the sympathetic intermediolateral nucleus (IML), lateral funicle (LF), intercalated region (IC), the area surrounding the central canal (CA), and the sacral preganglionic parasympathetic cell group. While the distribution of immunoreactive cells was generally similar in both species, some differen…
