Mechanical impact of the antagonist muscles during maximal dorsiflexion is action mode dependent

2019

Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) has long been considered as the best measure of neuromuscular performance. However, when MVC is paired with electromyographic (EMG) activity recording it has bee...

Coactivation at the ankle joint is not sufficient to estimate agonist and antagonist mechanical contribution

2009

The aim of this study was to assess, via an elec- tromyographic (EMG) biofeedback method, the mechanical con- tribution of both agonist and antagonist muscles during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). We compared this original method with the MVC-EMGmax ratio and the torque/EMG relationship method, both of which are commonly used to estimate antago- nist torque. The plantarflexion (PF) and dorsiflexion (DF) MVCs were measured simultaneously with EMG activity of triceps surae (TS) and tibialis anterior in 15 young adults (mean age 23 years). Antagonist torques obtained from the torque/EMG relationship and EMG biofeedback methods appeared to be similar. TS antagonist torque had a major mech…

How the ankle joint angle alters the antagonist and agonist torques during maximal efforts in dorsi- and plantar flexion

2011

The aim of this study was to assess, via an EMG bio-feedback method, the ankle joint angle effect on the agonist and antagonist torques in plantar- (PF) and dorsi-flexion (DF). The isometric PF and DF maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) torques were measured simultaneously with surface EMG activity of triceps surae (TS) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles in 12 young adults (mean age 27) at five different ankle joint angles. Our results showed that: (i) The coactivation level does not properly reflect the mechanical effect of the antagonist muscle, (ii) TS antagonist torque significantly altered the DF MVC-angle relationship, whereas TA antagonist torque did not influence this MVC-angle re…

Climate variability and agriculture in Italy: a stochastic frontier analysis at the regional level

2020

In the next future, climate change effects will represent a challenge for Europe and the Mediterranean area. These will have to cope with a rapid increase in climate variability. Although many economic sectors may be affected, agriculture is the most susceptible as climate heavily affects crop production trends, yield variability and the availability of areas suitable for cultivation. Using the stochastic frontier approach, the aim of this work is to analyse the impacts of climate variability on Italian regional technical efficiency in the agricultural sector for a period spanning from 2000 to 2009. Considering that technical inefficiency could be influenced by two main annual meteorologica…

Consumers of flowers and ornamental plants: an eploratory survey in the Italian «Mezzogiorno» regions

2010

This paper aims to provide further knowledge of purchase and consumption behaviours with regard to flowers and ornamental plants in the regions of Italian «Mezzogiorno», as an acknowledgement of the centrality of final demand in the chain process. The knowledge of consumption process is fundamental either to the firm – in order to improve commercial strategies – or to competition authorities – with the purpose of implementing more effective policies. From the analysis carried out it emerges that flowers and ornamental plants consumption in the «Mezzogiorno» regions is characterised by a high penetration index and – just with regard to some commodities – by a low purchase frequency. Purchase…

Water and Flood Adaptation Education: from Theory to Practice

2021

The risk of flooding is the main natural hazard that affects the European region. This hazard has worsened in the recent decades due to the urban occupation of flood areas and the effects of climate change. Therefore, in Spain, interest in this subject is accentuated in the case of future teachers because this issue is mandatory to teach in primary education (grades 1–6; social sciences subject). The aims of this research are to explore the instruction about flooding received by future teachers during their school and university period and propose the instruction curricular activities to do in classroom (primary education). Methodologically, a questionnaire was distributed among future teac…

Effects of Air Tightness Tests on Steel Thin-Wall Box Structures with Circular and Rectangular Cross Sections

2019

In this paper, the effects of air tightness tests on steel box structures with rectangular or circular cross sections typical of port cranes (legs, arms, and crosspieces) are analyzed. Legs and arms are generally made with elements with profiles having a square or rectangular cross section, while the diagonal struts are made with profiles having circular cross sections. To verify the air tightness of these elements, a necessary requirement to protect them from corrosion if they are not protected with other protection techniques, air tightness tests are performed. These tests, in the framework of durability tests, must be carried out while maintaining the structure elasticity well below the …

Airport development and metropolitan planning in Hong Kong

2019

Hong Kong, one of the world’s major international airports, has responded to the challenge of congestion of an airport too small for a growing air traffic by building a new efficient airport, thus opening the way for a reconversion of the old airport site. This has allowed Hong Kong to strengthen its position as a global hub for air freight and international passengers, while being a core element of the ongoing spatial restructuration of the Pearl River delta, including a new town next to the airport and an intermodal center at the end of the HKMZ bridge-tunnel from Macau.
