AN ATTEMPT TO INVESTIGATE THE IMPACT OF SELECTED INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENTS ON THE POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE BIGGEST EUROPEAN CITIES. APPLICATION …
2019

An Introduction to the HLanData Project: a Step Forward in the Harmonization of Spatial Information Throughout Europe
2021
Nowadays spatial information is becoming more and more accessible for various purposes due to local, national and European initiatives. This paper is addressed to one such initiative Hlandata, whose purpose is to make a significant step forward in the harmonization and use of land cover (LC) and land use (LU) geographic data and its related data bases over Europe. The project was developed using the best experiences from previous geographic data harmonization activities with the goal of demonstrating the feasibility of European level harmonization of land information related datasets. The three pilot projects “LU-LC Data Analysis System for intermediatelevel users”, “Harmonized and Interope…
Urbanisation and Urban Regionalisation Processes in the Metropolitan Area of Palermo
2021
This article provides empirical evidence that helps to answer several key questions relating to the regionalisation processes in Southern European cities. Several studies have documented the effects produced by the urban regionalisation process, especially in terms of territorial resource consumptions and the formation of new territorial patterns, overlooking the evaluation of public information that has been lost in terms of space and prerogatives of public action in the new post- metropolitan urban space. Starting from this theoretical framework, the interpretation of the post-metropolitan transition of Palermo through the filter of living in its dual dimension of being the outcome of soc…
Rural tourism in Spain
2002
Abstract The aim of this study is to determine the features that characterize a new tourist class, called modern rural tourism, and to figure out the proportion of this market in one specific Spanish region. The geographical territory under study is El Alto Palancia, one of the best known rural resorts, within the Valencian region. In order to fulfil these goals, an empirical study was undertaken and an econometric model was applied afterwards. A wide set of variables has been selected for the Logit Binomial Model, which is shown to be useful in discriminating the modern from traditional tourists.
The Architecture of a Complex System: The Oradea Metropolitan Area in Romania
2017
This chapter approaches the experience of inter-municipal cooperation in the metropolitan area corresponding to one of Romania’s largest cities. It shows that, in a national context not yet ready for the notion of metropolitan authority, making metropolitan cooperation work and achieving palpable results in terms of economies of scale and scope in service delivery require the setting up of a very complex structure. This complexity poses challenges in terms of decision-making and inter-sectoral coordination, while at the same time creates favourable premises for the political accountability of inter-municipal cooperation arrangements. This complexity has also proven to be the seed for volunt…
External managerial networking in meta-organizations. Evidence from regional councils in Norway
2019
Municipalities increasingly engage in cooperation with other municipalities to realize economies of scale and scope, to solve ‘wicked problems’ and to manage border crossing challenges. Often, such...
REGIONAL AIRPORT: STUDY ON ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL PROFITABILITY
2010
Using Geomatics and GIS technologies, the aim of this study is the recovery of a regional economy focused on the areas that are marginalized and depressed, or with an emerging tourist industry, to reach explanatory variables of the airport impact on the regional economy. This analysis is conducted on the basis of geographical data and socio-economic features that characterized the area taken into account. Next to the main activities relating to international air traffic, which absorb large flows of traffic and offer primary and supplementary services, today airport is identified by their irreplaceable role in modern economic life, especially in the connections between places that, for geogr…
New Energy Corridors in the Euro-Mediterranean Area: The Pivotal Role of Sicily
2018
The present paper deals with the new opportunities deriving from the interconnections of the European and North African transmission systems. In order to achieve a single international market for electricity exchanges, interconnections between networks in different countries are becoming increasingly important and Sicily, for its geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, will undoubtedly play an important role as an electrical bridge between Europe and the North Africa in the near future. The paper, presenting the actual electro-energetic context of Tunisia, reports the new important interconnection already realized in South Italy (in particular in Sicily) and describe t…
Classifying Regions for European Development Funding
2010
Structural and cohesion funds play a prominent role in European Union regional policy, which aims to reduce gaps in development between regions and disparities in well-being between European citizens. The regions and areas eligible for funding — 308,000 million during the 2007—13 period — are chosen according to regional GDP per inhabitant as the variable of reference. Despite the great importance of this indicator, the complex socioeconomic reality of regions cannot be fully explained by means of a single variable. Hence, using the large number of variables on economic, political, cultural and demographic characteristics available at regional level, this article groups European regions in…
Macro-regional Strategies, Cohesion Policy and Regional Cooperation in the European Union: Towards a Research Agenda
2018
Since 2009, the European Union has developed strategies for the Baltic Sea, Danube, Adriatic-Ionian and Alpine macro-regions. These macro-regional strategies represent a new tool of European Union governance that seeks to combine the community’s territorial cooperation and cohesion policy repertoire with intergovernmental ‘regional cooperation’ involving European Union member and partner countries. By establishing comprehensive governance architectures for cross-sectoral and trans-boundary policy coordination in areas such as transport infrastructure and environmental protection, macro-regional strategies seek to mobilise European Union member and non-member states alike in promoting and h…
