Discussing the Concepts of Cluster and Industrial District

The significance and popularity of the cluster and industrial district concepts claim for a deeper reflection. The analysis of one of the European Commission’s (EC) policy documents shows inconsistencies that do not impede the formulation of normative statements. That way we answer the question of why and how cluster ideas have substituted industrial district principles and the consequences derived from that phenomenon.

Policy makers in regional development often relate their policies to frameworks proposed by researchers in the field. Of these frameworks, the regional innovation system (RIS) has been one of the most influential. This chapter focuses on the difficulties that arise when policy makers try to enact the RIS and other related frameworks and proposes action research—and, more specifically, a co-generative approach—to help face these challenges. In each country two regions are selected: one peripheral but relatively dynamic and another accessible but relatively lagging. Pedicled Flaps for Anterior Chest Wall Reconstruction

Pedicled local or regional flaps are the main reconstructive tool for chest wall defects. Muscle or musculocutaneous flaps are most commonly used, with the latissimus dorsi and the pectoralis major being the workhorse flaps. However, perforator flaps have recently affirmed even for reconstruction of complex defects. A thorough knowledge of the vascular anatomy of the thorax and of the patient’s medical history is essential for selecting the best reconstructive option. The defect location, size, and depth as well as previous surgeries in the same area are the main issues affecting the reconstructive choices.

Productivity, Infrastructures and Convergence: Panel Data Evidence on Italian Regions

The paper first employs the Growth Accounting methodology in order to calculate the annual levels of Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in Italian regions for the period 1970-2001. The main result of this initial analysis is that the well-known gap in labour productivity among Italian regions depends mostly on the differences in TFP. The paper then investigates on the presence (or absence) of regional convergence in TFP over the period considered. To this end, physical and social infrastructures are taken into account as factors that influence the process of convergence.
