Desmoid tumor of the tongue

2008

Desmoid tumors are rare neoplasms accounting for 0.03% of all neoplasms and have an estimated incidence of 2 to 4 per million per year. World Health Organization currently refers to all of the deep types of fibromatosis as desmoidtype of fibromatoses. The term ?desmoid? refers to the hard, tendon-like appearance of the tumor. The etiological factors suggested include genetic, endocrine and physical factors. About fifty percent of desmoid tumors arise in the abdominal region. The extra-abdominal desmoid tumors present a difficult problem in recognition and management especially because of the striking discrepancy between its deceptively harmless microscopic appearance and its potential to at…

2010

Osteoma, a benign neoplasia of bone tissue, is considered a quiescent neoplasm. An active osteoma is an uncom- mon lesion. We presented a case of a mandibular osteoma with an unusual active behavior. In January of 2001 was admitted in the Oral Medicine Service a 11-years old female because an asymptomatic growth in the left side of their face with two years of evolution. Crecimiento femorotibial en miembros inmovilizados de rata

1986

An experimental study has been carried out using rats stills in the growth stage, whose right hindlimbs have been immobilized. Weekly, during four weeks, the animals were destroyed and measurements taken of the tibias and femurs, establishing that the rate of tibialis growth was higher in the immobilized limb than in the free limb (p. o. 001). The femurs, however, showed a similarity of measurement in both limbs. Our findings show that immobilization of a limb in a functional position is in no way prejudicial to bone growth.

Glove perforation during oral surgical procedures

2006

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of glove perforation among undergraduates and residents performing maxillofacial surgery and identify procedures associated with the perforations. Study Design: For this purpose, 200 pairs of surgical gloves were used. For inspecting the perforations, the gloves were filled with water, at least 500 ml. Results: Sixteen gloves (8%) were perforated, 8 (4%) by residents and 8 (4%) by undergraduate students. Only the residents noticed that 2 gloves (1%) were perforated and identified the object causing the perforation. The left hand was the more affected with 9 perforations (4.5%). The finger pulp was the region most affected with …

Floor of the mouth hemorrhage subsequent to dental implant placement in the anterior mandible

2019

Abstract Complications in dental implant surgery are possible. Bleeding complications have been described that may be serious, particularly in the floor of the mouth. We present two cases of sublingual hematomas during dental implant osteotomies that impeded but did not close the airway. The clinical courses of these patient’s complications are reviewed. One patient had immediate hematoma formation while the other developed a hematoma overnight, presenting the next day. The treatment rendered was a precautionary in-hospital tracheotomy for the first patient and only compression control for the second. Bleeding complications during dental implant placement in the anterior mandible can be ser…
