Recent acquired STD and the use of HAART in the Italian Cohort of Naive for Antiretrovirals (I.Co.N.A): analysis of the incidence of newly acquired h…

2008

Objective: To estimate the incidence of newly acquired syphilis (n-syphilis) and hepatitis B infection (n-hepatitis B) in I.Co.N.A. and to evaluate the impact of HAART, calendar date and risk group. Methods: Cohort study: Incidence was calculated by person-years analyses. Poisson regression was used for the multivariate model. Results: The rate of n-syphilis was 23.4/1,000 PYFU and it increased over time; HIV transmission risk was the most important predictor: men who have sex with men (MSM) had a considerable higher risk (RR 5.92, 95% CI 2.95-12.13 vs IDU/exIDU, p < 0.0001). The rate of n-hepatitis B was 12.2/1,000 PYFU; it declined in recent years and halved per 10 years age. Patients wit…

Does Microfinance Cause or Reduce Suicides? Policy Recommendations for Reducing Borrower Stress

2011

At a time when suicides by microfinance borrowers in Andhra Pradesh are extensively discussed, this paper makes an initial tentative exploration into the impact of microfinance on suicides. Does MF reduce or increase suicides? Data limitations imply methodological limitations and provisional conclusions. The literature review, starting with Emile Durkheim, of research on suicides brings out the importance of psychological factors, divorce, and unemployment. We investigate time series data on suicides in India and find a just significantly positive correlation with male suicide rates and slightly negative correlations (not significant) with female suicide rates – but no relation between micr…

Intraosseous monitoring of drilling in lumbar vertebrae by ultrasound: An experimental feasibility study.

2016

The rationale for this project is to evaluate the efficiency of a novel sonographic method for measurements of interosseous distances. The method utilizes a propagating ultrasonic beam through aqueous milieu which is directed as a jet into a drilled tract. We used a plastic model of human L5 vertebra and ex vivo specimen of L5 porcine vertebra and generated 2 mm in diameter tracts in vertebral pedicles. The tracts were created in the "desired" central direction and in the "wrong" medial and lateral directions. The drilled tracts and the residual, up to opposite cortex, distances were measured sonographically and mechanically and compared statistically. We show that "true" mechanical measure…

DesMol2, an Effective Tool for the Construction of Molecular Libraries and Its Application to QSAR Using Molecular Topology

2019

A web application, DesMol2, which offers two main functionalities, is presented: the construction of molecular libraries and the calculation of topological indices. These functionalities are explained through a practical example of research of active molecules to the formylpeptide receptor (FPR), a receptor associated with chronic inflammation in systemic amyloidosis and Alzheimer&rsquo

QSPR prediction of retention times of phenylurea herbicides by biological plastic evolution.

2012

A simple/sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method, with ultraviolet (UV) detection, was developed for phenylurea-herbicide analysis, which involves preconcentration using solid-phase extraction. Mobile phase was acetonitrile/water at flow-rate of 1 mL.min-1 with direct UV absorbance detection at 210 nm. Analyte separation studied on a C18 column was applied successfully to herbicide analysis in soft drink's brands and tap water. Good linearity/repeatability was observed for all pesticides. Retention times increase as: metoxuron < monuron < diuron < matazachlor < linuron. They are modelled by structure-property relations. The effect of different types of features is analyzed:…

Application of molecular topology to the prediction of the antimalarial activity of a group of uracil-based acyclic and deoxyuridine compounds.

2008

A topological-mathematical model has been arranged to search for new derivatives of deoxyuridine and related compounds acting as antimalarials against Plasmodium falciparum. By using linear discriminant and multilinear regression analysis a model with two functions was capable to predict adequately the IC(50) for each compound of the training and test series. After carrying out a virtual screening based upon such a model, new structures potentially active against P. falciparum are proposed.

Effect of beta-lactoglobulin polymorphism on milk-related traits of dairy ewes analysed by a repeated measures design.

2000

Among specific genes that may affect economically important traits in sheep, the β-lactoglobulin (LGB) locus has been extensively studied. Polymorphism has been detected in several breeds, but studies of the effect of LGB alleles on milk production traits have given conflicting results. Some found that LGB polymorphism significantly affects milk yield (Bolla et al. 1989; Herget et al. 1995; Fraghì et al. 1996), fat and protein content (Garzon & Martínez 1992; Giaccone et al. 1997; Kukovics et al. 1998), only fat content (Pirisi et al. 1998) and cheese yield and composition (Di Stasio et al. 1997; Rampilli et al. 1997). However, other studies failed to detect any effect of the gene on mi…

Hemostatic agents in endodontic surgery of maxillary molars : a randomized controlled pilot study of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) strips as an adju…

2019

Background Hemostasis is of critical importance in endodontic surgery. Studies on bleeding control in maxillary molars are scarce. The present study compares the efficacy of two hemostatic techniques in controlling bleeding in endodontic surgery. Material and Methods A randomized two-arm pilot study involving 30 patients with peri-radicular lesions in maxillary molars (first and second molars) was carried out including the following hemostatic agents: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) strips as an adjunct to epinephrine impregnated gauze (test group; n = 15) and aluminum chloride (Expasyl™) (control; n = 15). Bleeding control was independently assessed by the surgeon and by two blinded observe…

Correlation of Pharmacological Properties of a Group of Hypolipaemic Drugs by Molecular Topology

1996

Abstract This investigation was undertaken to test the ability of the molecular connectivity model to predict the percentage of plasma protein binding, the percentage of total cholesterol reduction and oral LD50 in rats of a group of hypolipaemic drugs using multi-variable regression equations with multiple correlation coefficients, standard error of estimate, degrees of freedom, F-Snedecor function values, Mallow's CP and Student's t-test as criteria of fit. Regression analyses showed that the molecular connectivity model predicts these properties. Corresponding stability (cross validation) studies were made on the selected prediction models which confirmed their goodness of fit. The resul…

Zinc-positive presynaptic boutons of the rabbit hippocampus during early postnatal development

1998

Abstract The evolution of vesicular zinc-containing boutons in the developing rabbit hippocampus has been studied during early postnatal life using the selenite–Danscher histochemical method. By P3, large immature mossy fiber boutons with labeled synaptic vesicles were seen in the hilus of the dentate gyrus and in the stratum lucidum of the CA3–CA4 hippocampal areas. After P5, smaller boutons with labeled vesicles were identified in the stratum oriens and stratum radiatum of all hippocampal areas, and even transiently in the stratum lacunosum of P6 animals. Vesicular zinc-containing boutons increased in number and underwent ultrastructural maturation; light microscope densitometric–volumetr…
