Un mondo senza confini, un potere senza limiti. Temi e retoriche identitarie dell’«eccezionalismo» ateniese

2022

Starting with the political category of 'exceptionalism', which has been used to describe US foreign policy, especially in the 20th century, this paper proposes a comparative analysis with 5th century Athenian policy, especially during its maritime empire…

Musical experiences in learning English as a foreign language

2009

Materiaali koostuu neljän suomalaisen nuoren aikuisen haastatteluista. Tutkielmassa vastataan kysymyksiin: 1) Miten musiikki on ollut läsnä haastateltavien englannin oppimisen historiassa? 2) Millaisia kokemuksia oppijoilla on vieraan kielen, erityisesti englannin, oppimisesta mu…

Faith- based diplomacy and cultural security: Between pluralism and particularism

2023

Two basic approaches to faith-based diplomacy (FBD) have developed over the last twenty years. For some, it is a synonym of supra-denominational conflict prevention and resolution, and for others, it is an element of the state’s foreign policy exploited to achieve not just cultural but also political goals. The purpose of the chapter is to present the interrelationships between FBD and cultural security in the context of the “return of religion” and the “post-secular turn”. The conducted analysis, which is theoretical in nature, contributes to the discussion on the role of the religious determinant, pointing to the existence of two fundamentally separate approaches to the application of rel…

Social capital in relation to the foreign market entry and post-entry operation of family SMEs

2011

Scholars in the discipline of international entrepreneurship have mainly studied rapidly internationalizing firms. However, the majority of entrepreneurial firms are family-owned businesses (85% of all firms in the EU and the USA). Research on family business has focused on the importance of bonding social capital whereas, despite its importance, bridging social capital has not so far attracted much attention. It has been argued that bridging social capital plays an important role in firms’ internationalization processes. The purpose of this article is to examine the role of bridging social capital in the initial entry and post-entry operations of eight family SMEs with regard to the French…

INTERFERENCE PHENOMENA IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING- SOME OBSERVATIONS FROM ROMANIAN-ENGLISH CONTACT

2012

Foreign language learning is the locus of varying degrees of interference from the learner’s first language (L1), the product of this influence being called interlanguage. As such, it is important to identify those areas of the L1 which could lead to negative transfers into the target language and thus result in imperfect learning. The present paper is concerned with English learning by speakers of Romanian, and analyses possible L1 retentions resulting from the use of English borrowings that diverge grammatically from their original counterparts. The particular cases described will be those of borrowed words which have undergone a process of conversion, and the use of bilingual verb phrase…

The Right to Food Sovereignty in International Law

2021

With the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP) in 2018, the right to food sovereignty was officially included in an international legal document for the first time. The concept of food sovereignty has been widely analyzed in sociology and politics, whilst it is rarely described in the legal context. This article aims to clarify the relationship among existing norms of international law such as the right to self-determination, the right to development and the right to adequate food with the right to food sovereignty. In order to clarify this relationship the article compares them with food sovereignty as described in the UND…

Identification of Russian accented Finnish by native and non-native listeners with and without Finnish proficiency

2018

The study focuses on how different groups of listeners, that is native Finnish speakers (n = 18), non-native learners of Finnish (n = 12) and non-native non-learners of Finnish (n = 18), judge samples (n = 80) of Russian accented Finnish in an auditory experiment. The samples are read-aloud phrases of three Finnish speakers and three L1 Russian beginner learners of Finnish who were recorded three times at six-month intervals during their residence in Finland. The results show that the listener groups differ significantly from each other in the ability to identify the Russian accented samples. In addition, all the listener groups reported to have paid more attention to p…

The Washington consensus and multinational banking in Latin America

2004

International audience; The dramatic increase in multinational banks in the late 1990s is a direct result of Washington Consensus-type policies that emphasize the removal of barriers to the free flow of financial capital. In Latin America, foreign banks now control almost half of the total banking activity. Inevitably, the direct implication of such circumstances is a fall in the profits of domestic banks. In response to this, domestic banks react by curtailing their overall lending in the short run, thereby preventing small borrowers from accession to credit, and eventually increasing their lending to riskier projects and borrowers in the medium run. Either way, the multinationalization of…
