Condicionamiento de preferencia de lugar: un modelo animal para evaluar las propiedades motivacionales de las drogas (Conditioned place preference: a…
2016
This article investigated the Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) technique as a useful model for studying the motivational properties of drugs of abuse. The background of the technique is presented. Methodological issues that need to be considered when designing a study using CPP are discussed. These issues include the different types of apparatus available, the different phases of the protocol and its possible variations, the type of design (biased vs unbiased), and the need to consider time effects. We discuss data interpretation issues, such what the animal learns, the presentation of the dependent variable, the influence of novelty, state-dependent learning, latent inhibition, the motor…
Do allopatric male Calopteryx virgo damselflies learn species recognition?
2012
There is a growing amount of empirical evidence that premating reproductive isolation of two closely related species can be reinforced by natural selection arising from avoidance of maladaptive hybridization. However, as an alternative for this popular reinforcement theory, it has been suggested that learning to prefer conspecifics or to discriminate heterospecifics could cause a similar pattern of reinforced premating isolation, but this possibility is much less studied. Here, we report results of a field experiment in which we examined (i) whether allopatric Calopteryx virgo damselfly males that have not encountered heterospecific females of the congener C. splendens initially show discri…

Publisher Copyright: © 2022 ACM. How do people interact with computers? This fundamental question was asked by Card, Moran, and Newell in 1983 with a proposition to frame it as a question about human cognition - in other words, as a matter of how information is processed in the mind. Recently, the question has been reframed as one of adaptation: how …
Flexural Behavior of Steel Fibrous Reinforced Concrete Deep Beams
2012
Experimental research was carried out regarding the flexural behavior of deep beams cast with plain and fibrous concrete with hooked steel fibers, and subjected to monotonic vertical loads. Four deep fiber-reinforced concrete beams were cast. Two of them were made of plain concrete with main and web steel reinforcements (RC), and two were made of hooked steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) with main steel reinforcements. The experimental results show the brittle behavior of reinforced deep RC members characterized by crushing of concrete struts and fracture of web steel bars. SFRC deep beams exhibit higher strength and, above all, ductility with respect to RC members due to the bridging a…
Evaluation of web reinforcements in prestressed concrete box girders through shear-transverse bending domains
2020
In concrete box girders, the amount and distribution of reinforcements in the webs have to be estimated considering the local effects due to eccentric external loads and cross-sectional distortion and not only the global effect due to the resultant forces of a longitudinal analysis: shear, torsion and bending. This work presents an analytical model that allows designers to take into account the interaction of all these effects, global and local, for the determination of the reinforcements. The model is based on the theory of stress fields and it has been compared to a 3D finite element analysis, in order to validate the interaction domains. The results show how the proposed analytical mode…
IDPlanT: the Italian database of plant translocation
2021
IDPlanT is the Italian Database of Plant Translocation, an initiative of the Nature Conservation Working Group of the Italian Botanical Society. IDPlanT currently includes 185 plant translocations. The establishment of a national database on plant translocation is a key step forward in data sharing and techniques improvement in this field of plant conservation. Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/11263504.2021.1985004.
Timber framed with masonry infill: a historical anti-seismic device. The Portuguese Pombaline gaiola.
2017
Post-seis…

Trajectory Design and Resource Allocation for Multi-UAV Networks : Deep Reinforcement Learning Approaches
2023
The future mobile communication system is expected to provide ubiquitous connectivity and unprecedented services over billions of devices. The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which is prominent in its flexibility and low cost, emerges as a significant network entity to realize such ambitious targets. In this work, novel machine learning-based trajectory design and resource allocation schemes are presented for a multi-UAV communications system. In the considered system, the UAVs act as aerial Base Stations (BSs) and provide ubiquitous coverage. In particular, with the objective to maximize the system utility over all served users, a joint user association, power allocation and trajectory desi…
Numerical analysis of the mechanical response of wood glulam beams reinforced through the thickness by FRP rods
2009
The modern use of through-thickness reinforcement in wood glulam (glued laminated) beams, bridging the potential delamination crack faces, has shown to be an effective technological solution to improve their interlaminar fracture strength. In this paper, the behaviour of wood glulam beams is investigated from an experimental and numerical point of view, comparing the mechanical response of unreinforced and reinforced (by FRP rods) beams subjected to four points bending tests. For the numerical analysis, a simple two-phases (joint and reinforcement) interface model has been formulated and implemented in a finite element code. In particular, the classical interface model for adhesive joint, a…
