Energy Efficiency and Sustainability of Different Building Structures in Latvian Climate

2015

Five experimental test buildings have been built in Riga, Latvia. They are identical except external walls for which different mainly regional building materials are used. Calculated U-values of the other walls, floor and ceiling are the same for each test building. Initial moisture influences the relative humidity of indoor air, which can be higher in the initial time period; as a result, heat transmittances are also very different and cause different heating/cooling energy consumption. Overheating risk in summer exists for test buildings with the smallest thermal inertia. Both summer and heating seasons have been analysed and differences between five test houses have been discussed in det…

Geohazard assessment of the north-eastern Sicily continental margin (SW Mediterranean): coastal erosion, sea-level rise and retrogressive canyon head…

2022

Coastal dynamics are the result of several processes controlling the balance between sediment input and output over time. The beach system is not always able to maintain a neutral coastal balance due to natural and anthropogenic causes. We present an integrated marine geology, geomorphological and sea-level rise analysis in the coastal sector between Torre delle Ciavole and Capo Calavà (North-Eastern Sicily, Italy). This sector is characterized by high uplift rates and frequent seismicity (mainly generated by the very active Vulcano-Tindari Fault System), promoting the development of mass-wasting processes in the coastal and offshore sectors. A main erosive feature observed in the area is th…

Size variations in the genus Gephyrocapsa during the Early Plaeistocene in the eastern Mediterranean

2014

The genus Gephyrocapsa, belonging to coccolithophores, hasoften been used in biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic studies ofthe late Cenozoic. This taxon exhibits a gradual increase in sizeduring the Early Pleistocene which has been ascribed to evolutiveand/or environmental processes and has been used for biostratigraphicpurposes. Here we show both biometric and relative abundance data ofspecimens of this genus between about 2.0 and 0.9 Ma, from sedimentsof the Ionian Sea (eastern Mediterranean). Measurements onthe long axis of placoliths highlight a gradual size increase betweenthe upper part of MNN 19a and the top of MNN 19d biozones. Onthe basis of the comparison with paleoenvironmental…

Life expectancy of people with intellectual disability: a 35-year follow-up study.

2000

A 35-year follow-up study based on a nation-wide population study of the life expectancy of people with intellectual disability (ID) was undertaken. The study population consisted of a total of 60,969 person-years. A prospective cohort study with mortality follow-up for 35 years was used and the life expectancy of people with ID was calculated for different levels of intelligence. Proportional hazard models were used to assess the influence of level of intelligence and associated disorders on survival. People with mild ID did not have poorer life expectancy than the general population and subjects with mild ID did not have lower life expectancy in the first 3 decades of life. In cases with …

Strain of employees in the machine industry in Finland.

1978

In order to investigate the strain of workers in different occupations of the Finnish machine industry, energy expenditure and heart rate of 190 men and 47 women employees were measured during their normal course of work. Work was most strenuous in occupations in the early stages of production and in unskilled jobs. The relative strain of semi-skilled workers was highest in the oldest age groups, over 45 years. It is concluded that when systems for grading the strain of industrial work are constructed, the long-term effects of work and workers' characteristics such as age, sex, weight and physical fitness should be taken into consideration.

Cancer survival in Europe 1999-2007 by country and age: results of EUROCARE--5-a population-based study

2013

Background: Cancer survival is a key measure of the effectiveness of health-care systems. EUROCARE-the largest cooperative study of population-based cancer survival in Europe-has shown persistent differences between countries for cancer survival, although in general, cancer survival is improving. Major changes in cancer diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation occurred in the early 2000s. EUROCARE-5 assesses their effect on cancer survival in 29 European countries. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we analysed data from 107 cancer registries for more than 10 million patients with cancer diagnosed up to 2007 and followed up to 2008. Uniform quality control procedures were a…

Fall incidence in frail older women after individualized visual feedback-based balance training.

2003

Background: The knowledge concerning balance training actually lowering fall rates among frail older persons is limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a 4-week individualized visual feedback-based balance training on the fall incidence during 1-year follow-up among frail older women living in residential care. Methods: Twenty-seven older women from 2 residential care homes were randomized into exercise (n = 20) and control (n = 7) groups. Balance measurements were carried out before and after a 4-week training period and falls were monitored by monthly diaries for 1 year. An interview about fear of fal…

Age-related socio-economic and geographic disparities in breast cancer stage at diagnosis: a population-based study.

2015

Background: This study aimed to determine the impact of socio-economic and geographic disparities on disease stage at diagnosis according to age in breast cancer (BC) patients. Secondary purpose was to describe survival . Methods: All women with primary invasive BC, diagnosed from 1998 to 2009 in the department of Cote d’Or were retrospectively selected using data from the Cote d’Or BC registry. European transnational ecological deprivation index (French European Deprivation Index) was used to measure the socio-economic environment. Relationships between socio-geographic deprivation and disease stage at diagnosis according to age were assessed by a multilevel ordered logistic regression mod…

Socioeconomic deprivation and cancer survival in Germany: An ecological analysis in 200 districts in Germany

2013

Although socioeconomic inequalities in cancer survival have been demonstrated both within and between countries, evidence on the variation of the inequalities over time past diagnosis is sparse. Furthermore, no comprehensive analysis of socioeconomic differences in cancer survival in Germany has been conducted. Therefore, we analyzed variations in cancer survival for patients diagnosed with one of the 25 most common cancer sites in 1997-2006 in ten population-based cancer registries in Germany (covering 32 million inhabitants). Patients were assigned a socioeconomic status according to the district of residence at diagnosis. Period analysis was used to derive 3-month, 5-year and conditional…
