Neonatal representation of odour objects: distinct memories of the whole and its parts
2014
Extraction of relevant information from highly complex environments is a prerequisite to survival. Within odour mixtures, such information is contained in the odours of specific elements or in the mixture configuration perceived as a whole unique odour. For instance, an AB mixture of the element A (ethyl isobutyrate) and the element B (ethyl maltol) generates a configural AB percept in humans and apparently in another species, the rabbit. Here, we examined whether the memory of such a configuration is distinct from the memory of the individual odorants. Taking advantage of the newborn rabbit's ability to learn odour mixtures, we combined behavioural and pharmacological tools to specifically…
Demand for life annuities from married couples with a bequest motive
2006
The aim of this paper is to explain the ‘annuities puzzle’ in greater depth by introducing the bequest motive. It will try to determine whether this motive really is a relevant feature influencing the demand for life annuities from married couples. With this aim in mind, we develop an optimization model of the utility provided by purchasing a life annuity with contingent survivor benefit or a joint survivor life annuity. Our model is based on that first put forward by Brown and Poterba (2000), to which we have added elements from other models, such as Friedman and Warshawsky's (1990) and Vidal and Lejárraga's (2004), which include the bequest motive. This will enable us to calculate the ann…
La vida cotidiana de los vecinos de Manila a través de sus testamentos e inventarios de bienes
2019
With the general objective indicated in its title, this work tries to highlight relevant aspects in the continuity of the Spanish domain in the Philippines, dependent on the maintenance of the Spanish capital. The inevitable selection of topics has lead the preferences of this work towards the residents collaboration to defend the city, the conversion of many of them into traders of exotic products and singular slaves owners, and their collaboration to an incredible miscegenation due to the ethnic variety. On the other hand, to follow the footsteps of the first generation of residents in Manila, at the end of the 16th century and during the 17th century, this work gives us some information …
Experimental Quantum Probing Measurements With No Knowledge on the System-Probe Interaction
2020
In any natural science, measurements are the essential link between theory and observable reality. Is it possible to obtain accurate and relevant information via measurement whose action on the probed system is unknown? In other words, can one be convinced to know something about the nature without knowing in detail how the information was obtained? In this paper, we show that the answer is surprisingly, yes. We construct and experimentally implement a quantum optical probing measurement where measurements on the probes, the photons' polarization states, are used to extract information on the systems, the frequency spectra of the same photons. Unlike the pre-existing probing protocols, our …
Methods of calculation for the T-matrix
1991
In the preceding section we have shown how the observables can be expressed in terms of the T-matrix elements or in terms of the multipole amplitudes OLλ(μjls) which contain all the relevant information on the dynamical properties of the system. For the calculation of these amplitudes a variety of different methods have been developed utilizing various kinds of approximations.
Coherence Checking and Propagation of Lower Probability Bounds
2003
In this paper we use imprecise probabilities, based on a concept of generalized coherence (g-coherence), for the management of uncertain knowledge and vague information. We face the problem of reducing the computational difficulties in g-coherence checking and propagation of lower conditional probability bounds. We examine a procedure, based on linear systems with a reduced number of unknowns, for the checking of g-coherence. We propose an iterative algorithm to determine the reduced linear systems. Based on the same ideas, we give an algorithm for the propagation of lower probability bounds. We also give some theoretical results that allow, by suitably modifying our algorithms, the g-coher…
IL DIRITTO ALLO STUDIO NELLE LEGISLAZIONI REGIONALI.RIFLESSIONI A PARTIRE DALLA LEGGE REGIONALE SICILIANA. 10 DEL 20 GIUGNO 2019
2019
Analysis of the different regional systems of protection of the right to study, starting from the analysis of the new Sicilian regional law n. 10 of 2019. It appears to be innovative in many respects, although doubts may arise as far as verifying the concrete implementation…
Age differences in the irrelevant sound effect: A serial recognition paradigm
2015
In adults, the disrupting effect of irrelevant background sounds with distinct temporalspectral variations (changing-state sounds) on short-term memory performance was found to be robust. In the present study, a verbal serial recognition task was used to investigate this so-called Irrelevant Sound Effect (ISE) in adults and 8- to 10-year-old children. An essential part of the short-term memory impairment during changing-state speech is due to interference processes (changing-state effect) which can be differentiated from the deviation effect of auditory distraction. In line with recent findings (Hughes et al., 2013), our study demonstrates that the changing-state effect is not modulated by …
