Marian Devotion as a Form of Legitimization of the Imperial Authority

2014

Abstract The present research addresses matters concerning the relationship between Church and state during the reign of Theodosius II of Rome, analyzing especially the case of legitimization of the imperial authority found in the first half of the fifth century when the Empress Pulcheria tried to identify herself with the Virgin Mary before her subjects in order to further maintain control of the state alongside her brother, Theodosius II. This paper also attempts to connect the problem of the political experiment with the development of a Marian devotion in Constantinople as a solution for pagan cults’ inculturation, reassessing Nestorius’ reaction in parallel with the position of Epiphan…

The Orthodox Neo-patristic Movements as Renewal of Contemporary Orthodox Theology: An Overview

2015

Abstract This study is a synthesis of the author’s long-term pursuits which were completed by a doctoral thesis. He has a twofold objective: on the one hand, the first part of the study he will offer a brief review of the main names (respectively works) related to the renewal of Orthodox theology in the 20th century; on the other hand, for a better understanding of the sources of this direction of theological revival, in the second part he will analyse the idea of Sacred Tradition as ecclesial way of life. In the end, he will describe the contributions, in various theological chapters, by Orthodox neo-patristic theologians; he will also signal a series of adverse aspects.

"Et occidetur virtute Domini Antichristus a Mikaele arcangelo".

What ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ are the στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου?

2014

The expression τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου is one of the most discussed, and most disputed, phrases in Galatians. In the following article, insight into the meaning of this phrase is sought by first of all clarifying and summarising the full scope of issues which must be explained by any interpretation of the phrase. Such a summary overview has often not appeared in various scholarly discussions. Subsequently, the primary proposed interpretations are discussed with the argument ultimately being made that it is Paul’s conception of ‘the world’ which provides the key to a solution to the interpretive conundrum that best satisfies the entire context of Paul’s letter and argument.

Portret staruszki w rosyjskiej memuarystyce kobiecej XIX wieku

2017

Portrayal of an old woman in the memoirs written bythe nineteenth century Russian womenIn the present article has been analysed portrayals of older women which appear in the memoirs of the nineteenth century Russian women writers. J. Sushkova, A. Kern and A. Smirnova-Rosset in their memoirs most often depict remarkable family members such as grandmothers and aunts, family friends. They focus on the analysis of their personalities, spiritual values and kind-heartedness rather than their physical appearance and signs of physical aging. Among the old ladies portrayed in the memoirs we encounter pious women, wise, experienced, understanding and hospitable women as well as overbearing women or …

Remembrance of Jews in contemporary catholic homilies

2020

The paper discusses the problem of transferring the memory of Jews through Polish contemporary Catholic homilies. In the biblical pericopies read throughout the liturgical year during Catholic mass, generally Jews play a negative role – as persecutors and killers of Jesus. According to the provisions of the Second Vatican Council, anti-Jewish content cannot be proclaimed in the Catholic Church, and the Bible, which according to the doctrine must remain unchanged, should be adequately commented on in homilies. The paper – on the example of about 40 homilies – shows, however, that priests who preach homilies do not use modern exegetic knowledge, but replicate stereotypes deeply rooted in cult…
