WISING UP: THE EVOLUTION OF NATURAL THEOLOGY

2012

This essay is in response to Professor Celia Deane-Drummond's 2012 Boyle lectures. The first part calls attention to the value and significance of her “sophianic theo-drama hypothesis” for the contemporary engagement between Christian theology and evolutionary science. In a sense, her proposal itself is a religious “adaptation” to changes within an international, interdisciplinary academic environment. The second part of the essay explores the rapidly shrinking “niche” of Christian natural theology and briefly summarizes an alternative set of hypotheses from the biocultural sciences of religion.

When Ethics and Aesthetics Are One and the Same: A Wittgensteinian Perspective on Natural Value

2015

Many environmental philosophers have held naturalness to be a primary source of nature’s value. Seen this way, the nature that is most valuable is wild nature, and ‘wild’ is that which is unmodiled by human activity. However, accounts of our attributions of value to the wild often have an aura of elusiveness to them, as if what really matters about nature being wild could not ultimately be captured by words. In an attempt to account for what really matters, I relate our fascination with wild nature to a famous Wittgensteinian quote—‘Ethics and Aesthetics are one and the same’ (Tractatus 2006a: 28, §6.421)—and inspect the ways in which important dimensions of our attributions of value to wil…

Food products, gastronomy and religious tourism: The resilience of food landscapes

2021

Abstract Religious tourism has always been a sector of significant importance in the field of cultural tourism. Religious tourism is located both in urban areas and in rural areas. In rural areas in the past it did not represent a factor of great impact on the local economy as most of the population lived in rural areas. With the advent of modern society and with the phenomena of agricultural and rural exodus, linked to the increase in income in developed societies, religious tourism becomes a critical success factor for many rural areas as a historical heritage. This aspect is of significant importance if we consider that it can represent a real engine of development especially for rural a…

Rituales, descentramientos territoriales y niveles de identidad: La Semana Santa Marinera de Valencia

2011

The aim of this paper is to study how the processes of spatial and identity recomposition brought about by a globalized world affect traditional religious rituals, with particular reference to the Semana Santa Marinera processions in Valencia (Spain). Instead of the ritual giving rise to a single local identity, it can be seen that levels of local identity —while not disappearing— overlap more and more with increasingly vague new territorialities ranging from processional networks based on canon law to state-organized meetings. Media coverage of the ritual means that new virtual communities with no fixed territorial base are created, and the complexity of this phenomenon …

The effect of the wheat crisis of 1629-1631 forced the city of Valencia to develop variou…

The militarization of public order at the end of the reign of Charles III: The Instruction of 1784

2004

The Government of Carlos III, in the last years of his reign, assigned to the Army police tasks of pursuit of the delinquency and…
