Social Geographical Patterns in Membership of the Established Church in Denmark

2019

The Church of Denmark was established in 1849 and is regarded as a pillar of traditional national identity. This status is being challenged by a steady decline in membership in recent decades. The Capital area is especially prone to low membership rates, and this regional pattern remains when the analysis controls for income and education. Furthermore, the local membership rate is also related to affiliation to the neighbourhood. Our detailed analysis is based on public register data on the individual level combined with geographical mapping information. Denmark is thereby divided into micro-aggregated areas in order to locate varying church membership rates. While some local variation can …

The Importance of Religion for the Evaluation of Everyday Ecological Decisions by German Adolescents

2020

Abstract Although previous research has addressed the relationship between religion and ecology in a variety of ways, little is known concerning how religious orientation affects concrete everyday ecological decisions, although these are centrally important for environmental education. Being interested in elucidating the preconditions of ecological learning in Biology and Religious Education in schools, the authors have developed an approach based on maximum concretion with regard to the ecological decision in which the influence of religion should be evaluated. With this goal in mind, they conducted an empirical study among secondary school students in central Western Germany (N = 815), wh…

From Cottesloe (1961) to Trondheim (2016): The journey of the Dutch Reformed Church back into the ecumenical family of the World Council of Churches

2018

This article presents an analysis of the journey of the Dutch Reformed Church (South Africa) back into the ecumenical fellowship of the World Council of Churches (WCC). The first part contains a brief historical review of the relationships between the WCC and the Dutch Reformed Church family, underlining the fact that the Dutch Reformed Church family in South Africa is a founding member of WCC and that it was never excluded from WCC fellowship; rather, this church itself resigned membership in the WCC after the Cottesloe Consultation (1961) at the pressure of the South African government of that time. The last part presents in detail the process of the readmission of the Dutch Reformed Chur…

Épigraphie religieuse et communautés civiques au Haut-Empire : la délimitation du territoire de la ciuitas Aeduorum aux IIe et IIIe siècles

2013

Since the 19th century, many proposals have been made regarding the boundaries of the territory of the civitas Aeduorum. Although there is general agreement on many geographic sectors, there are still major discrepancies of opinion, principally in the regions of Autissiodurum / Auxerre and Alesia. The religious epigraphy of the Early Empire, in particular the use of a specific formulary, seems to demonstrate a single religious (and political) community in these regions, which would thus have all belonged to the civitas Aeduorum in the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

Le colpe della cultura pagana: riflessioni sull'Epistola 69b di Giuliano

2002

The article is a reflection starting from the epistle 89b of the emperor Julian, which is presented as an illuminating document for the reconstruction of the values of the Hellenic civilisation, based on a precise paideutic-religious programme, which takes the form of a kind of canon of praiseworthy and/or inadvisable authors

The Judicial and Canonical Situation of the Romanian Byzantine Catholics in Hungary Around 1900

2021

This chapter analyses the legal and canonical situation of the Romanian Byzantine Catholics in Hungary at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Being part of the Hungarian State, the Greek Catholic bishops were subjected to the Hungarian hierarchy, attending the congresses and conferences of the Roman Catholic Bishops of Hungary. In addition, they were loyal to the Holy See, favouring the Latinisation of the Church in the three provincial councils. Through this approach, they secured the support of the papacy in disputes with the Hungarian higher clergy. Thus, they were able to uphold the individuality of their own Romanian Church, by organising their…

Unwilling Vows and Judicial Strategies: Sister Anna Maddalena Valdina

2018

In 1640 Anna, daughter of the prince of Valdina, was put into a convent in Palermo along with three sisters. She was seven years old and would remain there until 1699. She first asked her father and then her brother to leave the monastic state to which she was forced for patrimonial reasons and to which she never resigned herself. Her story is inscribed within the phenomenon of the so-called forced monacations, to which the Council of Trent had tried to remedy. On the death of her brother, in 1693, Anna, about sixty years old, asked the archbishop of Palermo to grant the nullity of her religious profession and her return to the lay state. Thus began a very severe judicial dispute that trigg…
