An interpretation of Finnish religious nationalism: the fourtopoiof theological depoliticisation
2009
. The topic of this article is the relation between ‘politicality’ and theology in the discourse of Finnish religious nationalism during the Winter War of 1939–40 and the Continuation War of 1941–44. I shall draw on the ideas of Kari Palonen and Anthony D. Smith in attempting to thematise theological depoliticisation as an intrinsic element of religious nationalism. Also, I will elaborate its political significance in the Finnish context, where the role of traditional religion in the general development of nationalist thought has been particularly important. The specific focus is on how prominent representatives of the Finnish clergy related to war and nationalist claims in general. My inte…
Civil Religion or Nationalism? The National Day Celebrations in Norway
2021
The Norwegian National Day (17 May, also referred to as Constitution Day) stands out as one of the most popular National Day celebrations in Europe. According to surveys, around seven out of every 10 Norwegians take part in a public celebration during this day. This means that the National Day potentially has an impact on the way people reflect upon national identity and its relationship to the Lutheran heritage. In this paper, I will focus on the role religion plays in the Norwegian National Day rituals. Researchers have described these rituals as both containing a significant religious element and being rather secularized. In this article, I discuss the extent to which the theoretical con…

Il pluralismo religioso come etica civile.
2017
This paper proposes to think the category of religious pluralism as an essential mindset of contemporary society. Religions, even today, go to war; sometimes it happens that a religious representation turns its prophetic vision in an extremist perspective to be applied against a perceived enemy. Often conflicts, never dormant, come back on presenting a new look and the cause is not a difference of belief or doctrine; as evidenced by Enzo Pace (2004), conflicts become an important symbolic device in identity politics. However, it is the duty of civil perspective reasoning on a proactive and inclusive perspective for the construction of the common good and the compresence of religious culture…

Towards a post-democratic era? Moral educations agains new forms of authoritarianism
2023
Educating in a convulsed political context demands a detailed analysis of the new circumstances of our times, especially the current democracy crisis. According to the latest reports issued by international evaluation organisations, one of the greatest challenges for democratic citizenship is the emergence and rise of authoritarianism within the framework of the so-called post-democracy, and also in the manifestations known as illiberal democracy. Moral and civic education has to respond to this challenge. With this in mind, we propose revitalising a participative and deliberative democracy model, rethinking the basic values in citizens' education, redefining the relation between what is pu…
