Constantine X Doukas (1059–1067) versus Uzes – about the Nomads on Boats on the Danube in 1064

2021

The reign of the Doukas dynasty in 1059–1078 was a time when new threats to the Byzantine Empire emerge in Europe and Asia. One of them was the increased activity of Turkmen who were penetrating the lands belonging to the Byzantines. A manifestation of these threats was visible during the rule of Constantine X Doukas (1059–1067) in 1064. We have there an invasion of the tribe of Uzes, who crossed the Danube. They ventured so far, as the vicinity of Thessalonica and the province of Hellas, plundering everything in their path. Their actions surprised the defense of the Byzantines. This attack on the empire was related to their crossing of the Danube, about which Michael Attaliates and Skylitz…

Necessity of Protecting Religious Feelings under Criminal Law in a Democratic State

2021

Offending religious feelings, as referred to in Article 196 of the Polish Penal Code, was criminalized as follows: ‘Any person who offends the religious feelings of others by publicly insulting an object of religious worship or a place dedicated to the public celebration of religious rites shall be liable to a fine, restriction of freedom or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years.’ This study highlights some doubts concerning the protection of freedom of conscience and religion using the example of the crime of offending religious feelings and attempts to prove the necessity of such protection in the Republic of Poland, a democratic state ruled by the law. The study first examines wh…

Political Extremism and Rationality

2002

Political extremism is widely considered to be the product of irrational behavior. Originally published in 2002, the distinguishing feature of this collection by well-known economists and political scientists from North America, Europe and Australia is to propose a variety of explanations which all insist on the rationality of extremism. Contributors use variants of this approach to shed light on subjects such as the conditions under which democratic parties take extremist positions, the relationship between extremism and conformism, the strategies adopted by revolutionary movements, and the reasons why extremism often leads to violence. The authors identify four core issues in the study of…

Religion, Empathy, and Cooperation: A Case Study in the Promises and Challenges of Modeling and Simulation

2019

The Cognitive Science of Religion (CSR) is developing a sophisticated naturalistic account of religion, grounded in empirical research. However, there are limitations to establishing an empirical basis for theories about religion’s role in human evolution. Computer modeling and simulation offers a way to address this experimental constraint. A case study in this approach was conducted on a key theory within CSR that recently has come under serious challenge: the Supernatural Punishment Hypothesis, which posits religion facilitated the shift from small, homogeneous social units to large, complex societies. It has been proposed that incorporating empathy as a proximate mechanism for cooperati…

2015

In this paper we propose a comparison of the position of D’Agostino with other representatives of convention: William Morgan. We refer to D’Agostino’s position in the first section and in the second section to Morgan’s. We ask whether Morgan, moreover of register his thesis within the Conventionalism, participates also of the internalist conception of sport. Although both authors are conventionalists, there are many different shades that fit between their positions be

Striving for Significance: The Relationships Between Religiousness, Spirituality, and Meaning in Life

2015

The aim of this study was to investigate whether religiousness and spirituality are associated with meaning in life, and which dimensions of religiousness and spirituality show the closest links with meaning in life. It was assumed that those religious and spiritual dimensions which are most imbued with meaning would be more significant for the presence of meaning than for the search for meaning in life. Two studies were conducted. The results of Study 1 showed that the “religious meaning system” was positively associated with “meaning in life,” with stronger connections for “presence of meaning” than for “search.” As regards “religious coping,” positive coping was positively related to pre…

When Meaning Matters: Coping Mediates the Relationship of Religiosity and Illness Appraisal with Well-Being in Older Cancer Patients

2018

When individuals face serious, traumatic illnesses such as cancer, religion can contribute to their coping processes and psychosocial adjustment. In the current study, we examined the relationship between religiosity conceptualized as the religious meaning system, illness appraisal, and psychological well-being with religious and nonreligious coping as potential mediators of this relationship among older cancer patients. In a cross-sectional design, 215 older Polish patients (60–83 years of age; 80% Catholic, 9% Protestant) with gastrointestinal cancer completed measures of religiosity, illness appraisal, religious coping, nonreligious coping, and psychological well-being. Using structural …

Tridentine reforms and the Sicilian Court of the 'Regia Monarchia': a jurisdictional conflict

2013

The Tridentine reforms met a real obstacle in the kingdom of Sicily, linked to the very particular religious-institutional system of the island, unique in the catholic European context. In Sicily, indeed, through a court called Regia Monarchia, re-organized by Philip II in 1579, the king exercised very wide ecclesiastical prerogatives, which went far beyond the simple right of royal patronage and greatly limited the power of Sicilian bishops. The Regia Monarchia jurisdiction was declared over the same Council of Trent decrees, making them virtually inapplicable for a long time. Indeed, as last instance of cases involving ecclesiastics, it often nullified the measures taken by the episcopal …

El papel de los conjuntos conventuales en la renovación ur bana de Palermo en la época de la Contrarreforma

2014

In a city like Palermo, ancient capital of the Reign of Sicily, the effect of new religious complexes born from the catholic politic of the Counter-Reformation, was sudden and explosive, and it caused, between the second half of the16th century and the first of the 17th century, a process of urban renewal never seen before. The essay means to analyze, first of all, the architectural interventions from a quantitative point of view, so to render the real dimension of the phenomenon and of the role it played in the destruction of the medieval city and the creation of the modern one, triggering un uninterrupted state of conflict between the new religious settlements and the owners of the near b…
