Validation of temperature-emissivity separation and split-window methods from TIMS data and ground measurements
2003
Abstract Land surface temperature retrieved with temperature-emissivity separation (TES) and split-window (SW) algorithms from six-channel Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) data in the HAPEX-Sahel experiment agreed with contemporaneous ground temperature measurements to within ±1 °C (TES and SW with channels at 10.8 and 11.7 μm, or SW-56). The SW algorithm used with TIMS channels at 8.4 and 8.7 μm (SW-12) underestimated ground temperatures by 2–5 °C. The TES method required atmospheric correction of at-sensor radiances, which was done with local radiosonde data and MODTRAN 4, and an empirical relationship between the spectral range of emissivity and its minimum value. Emissivity…
A simplified method for estimating the total water vapor content over sea surfaces using NOAA-AVHRR channels 4 and 5
2002
A simplified method for estimating the total amount of atmospheric water vapor, W, over sea surfaces using NOAA-AVHRR Channels 4 and 5 is presented. This study has been carried out using simulated AVHRR data at 11 and 12 /spl mu/m (with MODTRAN 3.5 code and the TIGR database) and AVHRR, PODAAC, and AVISO databases provided by the Louis Pasteur University (Strasbourg-France), NASA-NOAA, and Meteo France, respectively. The method is named linear atmosphere-surface temperature relationship (LASTR). It is based on a linear relationship between the effective atmospheric temperature in AVHRR Channel 4 and sea surface temperature. The LASTR method was compared with the linear split-window relation…
In-scene atmospheric correction of hyperspectral thermal infrared images with nadir, horizontal, and oblique view angles
2012
Atmospheric corrections for hyperspectral thermal images acquired with nadir, horizontal, and oblique views have typically relied on atmospheric modelling software, such as Moderate Resolution Atmospheric Transmission MODTRAN, to estimate atmospheric parameters. Data-only corrections, which require only information from the scene, are more versatile and less labour intensive, but do not yet seem to have been applied to horizontal and oblique views. Here, we apply, and modify where necessary, one published data-only algorithm in-scene atmospheric correction ISAC to nadir, horizontal, and slanted views The Aerospace Corporation's Spatially Enhanced Broadband Array Spectrograph System SEBASS a…
Hybrid retrieval of crop traits from multi-temporal PRISMA hyperspectral imagery
2022
The recently launched and upcoming hyperspectral satellite missions, featuring contiguous visible-to-shortwave infrared spectral information, are opening unprecedented opportunities for the retrieval of a broad set of vegetation traits with enhanced accuracy through novel retrieval schemes. In this framework, we exploited hyperspectral data cubes collected by the new-generation PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA) satellite of the Italian Space Agency to develop and test a hybrid retrieval workflow for crop trait mapping. Crop traits were mapped over an agricultural area in north-east Italy (Jolanda di Savoia, FE) using PRISMA images collected during the 2020 and 202…
Influence of competition on performance factors in under-19 soccer players at national league level.
2020
The aim of this study was to analyse and quantify the acute effects of competition on several performance factors in under-19 male soccer players. To this end, 198 national league players (17.56 ± 0.78 years) performed various tests to measure jump capacity, kicking velocity and sprint times immediately pre-match (T1), at half-time (T2) and post-match (T3). Tests included kicking the ball to measure ball velocity (KICK), sprinting for 40 meters, timing the first 30 meters (30mACCEL), the last 10 meters (10mACCEL) and the total distance (40mACCEL), and performing countermovement jumps (CMJ). For subsequent analysis, the sample was divided into 5 playing positions: goalkeepers (n = 24), defen…
Athena Mars rover science investigation
2003
[1] Each Mars Exploration Rover carries an integrated suite of scientific instruments and tools called the Athena science payload. The primary objective of the Athena science investigation is to explore two sites on the Martian surface where water may once have been present, and to assess past environmental conditions at those sites and their suitability for life. The remote sensing portion of the payload uses a mast called the Pancam Mast Assembly (PMA) that provides pointing for two instruments: the Panoramic Camera (Pancam), and the Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer (Mini-TES). Pancam provides high-resolution, color, stereo imaging, while Mini-TES provides spectral cubes at mid-inf…
MODIS probabilistic cloud masking over the Amazonian evergreen tropical forests: a comparison of machine learning-based methods
2019
Amazonian tropical forests play a significant role in global water, carbon and energy cycles. Satellite remote sensing is presented as a feasible means in order to monitor these forests. In particu...
Improved Temperature and Emissivity Separation Algorithm for Multispectral and Hyperspectral Sensors
2017
The Temperature and Emissivity Separation (TES) algorithm was originally developed for the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). This paper focuses on improving the TES algorithm. The main modification is the replacement of the normalized emissivity module with a new module, which is based on the smoothing of spectral radiance signatures. Smoothing is performed by estimating emissivity using an optimized approximation of the relationship between brightness temperature and emissivity. The improved TES algorithm, which is called Optimized Smoothing for Temperature Emissivity Separation (OSTES), was first tested on simulated data from three different sensors, …
Methane line parameters in the HITRAN2012 database
2013
International audience; The compilation of methane molecular line parameters was updated to include new global analyses and measurements for 12CH4, 13CH4 and 12CH3D. Over 70% of the methane parameters in HITRAN2008 were replaced; existing parameters retained were the microwave lines and the Dyad of 13CH4 near 7 μm and ν6 of 13CH3D near 8.7 μm, 12CH3D (7-4076 cm-1), hot bands of 12CH4 (1887-3370 cm-1) and normal sample CH4 (4800-5550 cm-1 and 8000-9200 cm-1). With a minimum intensity at 296 K in units of cm-1/(molecule cm-2) set to 10-37 for the far-IR and 10-29 for the mid- and near-IR, the methane database increased from 290,091 lines in HITRAN2008 to 468,013 lines, and three-fourths of th…
Double pulse laser induced breakdown spectroscopy applied to natural and artificial materials from cultural heritages
2009
Abstract The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an applied physical technique that has shown in recent years its great potential for rapid qualitative analysis of materials. Thanks to the possibility to implement a portable instrument that perform LIBS analysis, this technique is revealed to be particularly useful for in situ analysis in the field of cultural heritages. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the potentiality of LIBS technique in the field of cultural heritages, with respect to the chemical characterization of complex matrix as calcareous and refractory materials for further quantitative analyses on cultural heritages. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyses were used…
