Exploring the spatial relationship between airborne-derived red and far-red sun-induced fluorescence and process-based GPP estimates in a forest ecos…
2019
International audience; Terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) plays an essential role in the global carbon cycle, but the quantification of the spatial and temporal variations in photosynthesis is still largely uncertain. Our work aimed to investigate the potential of remote sensing to provide new insights into plant photosynthesis at a fine spatial resolution. This goal was achieved by exploiting high-resolution images acquired with the FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) airborne demonstrator HyPlant. The sensor was flown over a mixed forest, and the images collected were elaborated to obtain two independent indicators of plant photosynthesis. First, maps of sun-induced chlorophyll fluore…
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operated spectral camera system for forest and agriculture applications
2011
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) based hyperspectral imager compatible with the light weight UAV platforms. The concept of the hyperspectral imager has been published in the SPIE Proc. 7474 and 7668. In forest and agriculture applications the recording of multispectral images at a few wavelength bands is in most cases adequate. The possibility to calculate a digital elevation model of the forest area and crop fields provides means to estimate the biomass and perform forest inventory. The full UAS multispectral imaging system will consist of a high resolution false color imager and a FPI based hyperspectral imager which can be used at …
Testing Ikonos and Landsat 7 ETM+ Potential for Stand-Level Forest Type Mapping by Soft Supervised Approaches
2003
Forest types can be adopted as a suitable reference for classifying survey units within multipurpose forest resources inventories, at the properly considered level. This kind of hierarchical classification approach integrates an ecologically meaningful per-habitat perspective with practical survey, planning and management requirements. Advanced remote sensing technologies can be valuable tools for a cost-effective implementation of such an approach. In the present paper, data from high (Landsat 7 ETM+) and very high (Ikonos) spatial resolution satellite sensors were tested to understand their potential contribution supporting stand-level forest type mapping under Mediterranean conditions. I…

Fuzzy modeling of solar irradiance on inclined surfaces
2003
A model of solar irradiance on arbitrarily oriented inclined surfaces is proposed, based on fuzzy logic procedures. The behavior of the proposed model is similar to that of other models of increased performance such as the models of Perez or Gueymard, though it requires only a very limited number of classes and adjustable parameters. The use of fuzzy clustering optimizes the number and definition of the sky categories. The model considers overlapping clusters and allows an improved description of the sky situations close to the transition zone between contiguous categories.
Precision Oliviculture: Research Topics, Challenges, and Opportunities—A Review
2022
Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been an increase in the agricultural area devoted to olive growing and in the consumption of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). The continuous change in cultivation techniques implemented poses new challenges to ensure environmental and economic sustainability. In this context, precision oliviculture (PO) is having an increasing scientific interest and impact on the sector. Its implementation depends on various technological developments: sensors for local and remote crop monitoring, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), equipment and machinery to perform site-specific management through variable rate application (VRA), implementation of g…
Investigating effects in GNSS station coordinate time series
2014
The vertical and horizontal displacements of the Earth can be measured to a high degree of precision using GNSS. Time series of Latvian GNSS station positions of both the EUPOS®-Riga and LatPos networks have been developed at the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation of the University of Latvia (LU GGI). In this study the main focus is made on the noise analysis of the obtained time series and site displacement identification. The results of time series have been analysed and distinctive behaviour of EUPOS®-Riga and LatPos station coordinate changes have been identified. The possible dependences of GNSS station coordinate distribution on EPN station problems, seismic activity of some area…
Wind speed spatial estimation for energy planning in Sicily: A neural kriging application
2008
Abstract One of the first steps for the exploitation of any energy source is necessarily represented by its estimation and mapping at the aim of identifying the most suitable areas in terms of energy potential. In the field of renewable energies this is often a very difficult task, because the energy source is in this case characterized by relevant variations over space and time. This implies that any temporal, but also spatial, estimation model has to be able to incorporate this spatial and temporal variability. The paper deals with the spatial estimation of the wind fields in Sicily (Italy) by following a data-driven approach. Starting from the results of a preliminary study, a novel tech…
DETERMINATION OF THE IMPACTS OF LAND USE CHANGE ON WATER BASIN USING REMOTE SENSING AND GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
2016
The population has been increasing as a result of mass immigration in Istanbul. An urbanization process continues and it causes serious increases in urban areas while decreasing the amount of natural environment. This uncontrolled and illegal urbanization accompanied by insufficient infrastructure has caused degradation of cropland and forested areas in the metropolitan area, especially in water basin area. The watershed basins inside the metropolitan area have accelerated the land-cover changes, which have negative impacts on water quality of the basins. The Terkos water basin, one of the seven water basins of Istanbul providing drinking water, was selected as a study area. In order to und…
