Changes in land surface temperatures and NDVI values over Europe between 1982 and 1999

2006

Abstract We used land surface temperature (LST) algorithms and NDVI values to estimate changes in vegetation in the European continent between 1982 and 1999 from the Pathfinder AVHRR Land (PAL) dataset. These two parameters are monitored through HANTS (Harmonic ANalysis of Time Series) software, which allows the simultaneous observation of mean value, first harmonic amplitude and phase behaviors in the same image. These results for each complete year of data show the effect of volcanic aerosols and orbital drift on PAL data. Comparison of time series of HANTS cloud-free time series with the original time series for various land cover proves that this software is useful for LST analysis, alt…

Deep learning for agricultural land use classification from Sentinel-2

2020

Review of High Resolution Thermal Infrared Applications and Requirements: The Fuegosat Synthesis Study

2013

High resolution thermal infrared remote sensing can have a wide range of applications. In this chapter we describe the different applications and requirements identified after a revision study in the framework of the Fuegosat Synthesis Study (FSS). This project was funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), and the three main objectives were: (i) review of applications and analyses for user requirements, (ii) consolidation of user requirements over a broad range of applications, and (iii) matching of user requirements and industry concepts to identify and outline a set of potential mission scenarios and their corresponding requirements. This chapter focuses on issues (i) and (ii). These obj…

A comparative analysis of different spatial sampling schemes: Modelling of SSRB data

2008

Low spatial resolution satellite sensors provide information over relatively large targets with typical pixel resolutions of hundreds of km2. However, the spatial scales of ground measurements are usually much smaller. Such differences in spatial scales makes the interpretation of comparisons between quantities derived from low resolution sensors and ground measurements particularly difficult. It also highlights the importance of developing appropriate sampling strategies when designing ground campaigns for validation studies of low resolution sensors. We make use of statistical modelling of high resolution surface shortwave radiation budget (SSRB) data to look into this problem. A spatial …

Thermal–infrared emissivities of natural surfaces: improvements on the experimental set-up and new measurements

2003

Ground measurements of thermal infrared emissivities of terrestrial surfaces are required to derive accurate temperatures from radiometric measurements, and also to apply and validate emissivity models using satellite sensor observations. This paper focuses on the demanding aspects that are involved in the field measurement of emissivity using the box method and a hand-held radiometer. Measuring emissivities in field conditions can be hampered by external factors such as wind and solar irradiance. This can increase the time spent on the field campaign but, most importantly, it can cause no-sense fluctuations between consecutive observations. Here we propose original developments for the exp…

Validation of a temperature emissivity separation hybrid method from airborne hyperspectral scanner data and ground measurements in the SEN2FLEX fiel…

2008

This paper presents an assessment of the performance of a hybrid method that allows a simultaneous retrieval of land-surface temperature (LST) and emissivity (LSE) from remotely-sensed data. The proposed method is based on a synergistic usage of the split-window (SW) algorithm and the two-temperature method (TTM) and combines the advantages of both procedures while mitigating their drawbacks. The method was implemented for thermal channels 76 (10.56 µm) and 78 (11.72 µm) of the Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner (AHS), which was flown over the Barrax test site (Albacete, Spain) in the second week of July 2005, within the framework of the Sentinel-2 and Fluorescence Experiment (SEN2FLEX) field c…

Extraction of Endmembers from Spectral Mixtures

1999

Abstract Linear spectral mixture modeling (LSMM) divides each ground resolution element into its constituent materials using endmembers which represent the spectral characteristics of the cover types. However, it is difficult to identify and estimate the spectral signature of pure components or endmembers which form the scene, since they vary with the scale and purpose of the study. We propose three different methods to estimate the spectra of pure components from a set of unknown mixture spectra. Two of the methods consist in different optimization procedures based on objective functions defined from the coordinate axes of the dominant factors. The third one consists in the design of a neu…

Monitoring the invasion of an exotic tree (Ailanthus altissima) (Mill.) Swingle with Landsat satellite time series imagery in urban forest.

2015

In the Mediterranean area, one the most threat tree to various ecosystems is Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle. This is an aggressive invasive species common in natural and semi-natural habitat. Monitoring and mapping of invasive species is an important information for the conservation and management of ecosystems. The study of distribution and diffusion of invasive species are useful to assess their environmental impacts, formulate effective control strategies, and forecast potential spread. The main target of this work is to examine the feasibility of mapping the expansion of A. altissima using remote sensing techniques in a highly complex urban forest setting. Remote sensing has been a…
