Domain Wall Renormalization Group Study of XY Model with Quenched Random Phase Shifts

2002

The XY model with quenched random disorder is studied by a zero temperature domain wall renormalization group method in 2D and 3D. Instead of the usual phase representation we use the charge (vortex) representation to compute the domain wall, or defect, energy. For the gauge glass corresponding to the maximum disorder we reconfirm earlier predictions that there is no ordered phase in 2D but an ordered phase can exist in 3D at low temperature. However, our simulations yield spin stiffness exponents $\theta_{s} \approx -0.36$ in 2D and $\theta_{s} \approx +0.31$ in 3D, which are considerably larger than previous estimates and strongly suggest that the lower critical dimension is less than thr…

Towards gauge coupling unification in left-right symmetric SU(3)c×SU(3)L×SU(3)R×U(1)X theories

2017

We consider the possibility of gauge coupling unification within the simplest realizations of the $\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{c}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{L}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{R}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{U}(1{)}_{\mathrm{X}}$ gauge theory. We present a first exploration of the renormalization group equations governing the ``bottom-up'' evolution of the gauge couplings in a generic model with free normalization for the generators. Interestingly, we find that for a $\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{c}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(3{)}_{\mathrm{L}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\mathrm{SU}(…

gg→HH : Combined uncertainties

2021

In this paper we discuss the combination of the usual renormalization and factorization scale uncertainties of Higgs-pair production via gluon fusion with the novel uncertainties originating from the scheme and scale choice of the virtual top mass. Moreover, we address the uncertainties related to the top-mass definition for different values of the trilinear Higgs coupling and their combination with the other uncertainties.

The relaxant effects of cromakalim (BRL 34915) on human isolated airway smooth muscle

1992

Cromakalim (BRL 34915) is a potassium channel opener with therapeutic potential as a bronchodilator in asthma. Cromakalim (0.1–30 μmol/l) inhibited the spontaneous tone of human isolated bronchi n a concentration-related manner being nearly as effective as isoprenaline or theophylline. The order of relaxant potencies (expressed as -log10 IC50 mol/l; mean ±SEM) was isoprenaline (7.29 ± 0.27; n = 8) > cromakalim (5.89 ± 0.12; n = 7) > theophylline (4.07 ±0.13; n = 10). In human bronchi where tone had been raised by addition of histamine (0.1 mmol/l), acetylcholine (0.1 mmol/l) or leukotriene D4 (LTD4, 0.1 μmol/l), the relaxant effect of cromakalim was substantially reduced. Cromakalim suppres…

The liquid-solid transition of hard discs: first-order transition or Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young scenario?

2002

We consider the question of whether a two-dimensional hard-disc fluid has a first-order transition from the liquid state to the solid state as in the three-dimensional melting-crystallization transition or whether one has two subsequent continuous transitions, from the liquid to the hexatic phase and then to the solid phase, as proposed by Kosterlitz, Thouless, Halperin, Nelson and Young (KTHNY). Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the fluid that study the growth of the bond orientational correlation length, and of the crystal are discussed. The emphasis is on a recent consistency test of the KTHNY renormalization group (RG) scenario, where MC simulations are used to estimate the bare elastic c…

Rat adrenoleukodystrophy-related (ALDR) gene: full-length cDNA sequence and new insight in expression.

2001

X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is an inherited demyelinating disorder due to mutations in the ALD gene, which encodes a peroxisomal ABC half-transporter (ALDP). It has been suggested that ALDP assembles with ALDRP (adrenoleukodystrophy-related protein), a close homologous half-transporter, to form a functional heterodimer. For the first time full-length ALDRP cDNA (5.5 kb) was cloned, and 5' and 3' RACE analysis revealed that alternative usage of polyadenylation sites generates the two transcripts of 3.0 and 5.5 kb observed in the rat in Northern blot analysis. Southern blotting and chromosomal mapping demonstrated one ALDR locus in the rat genome. Characterisation of the 3' flanking…

Towards the development of a Decision Support System (DSS) for building renovation: Domain Mapping Matrix (DMM) for sustainability renovation criteri…

2018

Future building renovation concerns more holistic perspectives related to the sustainability seen in a wider range of objectives/criteria facilitated by the renovation scenarios. In this regard, based on the studies upon existing sustainability evaluation and assessment tools carried out in previous research works, a characteristic diagram including a value map for evaluating a holistic sustainable retrofitting was developed. Further, in present paper, by reviewing the relevant literature, looking into recent European renovation research projects, the Danish SIGMA database, and investigation of a real case, a comprehensive list of renovation approaches (i.e. insulation technologies, windows…

Towards a Holistic Approach to Retrofitting: A Critical Review of Stateof-the-art Evaluation Methodologies for Architectural Transformation

2017

The building sector is well known to be responsible for a considerable part of the total European energy consumption. In the endeavor to implement radical reductions, there is an identified potential in addressing the existing building stock through deep renovations. These renovations make up complex, highly interdisciplinary systems. They involve stakeholders across a broad spectrum of disciplines and potentially affect the lives of a large number of occupants. The involved people bring different understandings of value in sustainability into a project and judge the outcome according to this understanding. As a response to this, a number of sustainable assessment methodologies for the buil…

Towards a Holistic Methodology in Sustainable Retrofitting: Theory, Implementation and Application

2017

Sustainability paradigm foresees a balance of energy production and consumption with no, or minimal, negative impact on environment (within the environmental tolerance limits). It gives an opportunity to a country to employ its potentiality of the social and economic activities. An overview of recent researches about building renovation context demonstrates the lack of an appropriate methodology and decision support framework -by compounding the typical challenges of sustainable retrofitting from theory to implement stages- that takes into account the retrofitting projects throughout more comprehensive insights and perspectives. It calls, therefore, for a deep building renovation approach. …

B-parameters for ΔS=2 supersymmetric operators

1998

We present a calculation of the matrix elements of the most general set of DeltaS=2 dimension-six four-fermion operators. The values of the matrix elements are given in terms of the corresponding B-parameters. Our results can be used in many phenomenological applications, since the operators considered here give important contributions to K^0--K^0bar mixing in several extensions of the Standard Model (supersymmetry, left-right symmetric models, multi-Higgs models etc.). The determination of the matrix elements improves the accuracy of the phenomenological analyses intended to put bounds on basic parameters of the different models, as for example the pattern of the sfermion mass matrices. Th…
