Sensory-active compounds influencing wine experts' and consumers' perception of red wine intrinsic quality
2015
© 2014 Elsevier Ltd. There is a lack of studies focusing on the chemical compounds involved in quality perception. The present work combines both sensory and chemical approaches with the final goal of evaluating the sensory-active compounds influencing wine experts' and consumers' perception of red wine quality. Perceived quality was categorised by 108 consumers and 119 experts according to four levels going from very low to very high quality. In parallel, samples were described by a descriptive trained panel and volatile and non-volatile chemicals with known sensory activity were quantified. Wines with higher concentrations of eugenol, E- and Z-whiskylactones and 4-ethylphenol (discussed i…
Spacetime curvature and Higgs stability after inflation
2015
We investigate the dynamics of the Higgs field at the end of inflation in the minimal scenario consisting of an inflaton field coupled to the Standard Model only through the non-minimal gravitational coupling $\xi$ of the Higgs field. Such a coupling is required by renormalisation of the Standard Model in curved space, and in the current scenario also by vacuum stability during high-scale inflation. We find that for $\xi\gtrsim 1$, rapidly changing spacetime curvature at the end of inflation leads to significant production of Higgs particles, potentially triggering a transition to a negative-energy Planck scale vacuum state and causing an immediate collapse of the Universe.
Role of the insulin-like growth factor system in adrenocortical growth control and carcinogenesis.
2004
Clinically silent adrenocortical adenomas are the most frequent abnormalities in the adrenal gland. In contrast, adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare tumor with an extremely poor prognosis. The factors responsible for the frequent occurrence of benign adrenocortical tumors on one hand and the rare malignant transformation on the other are not known. Several genetic alterations such as loss of imprinting or loss of heterozygosity of the 11p15 gene locus causing a strong IGF-II overexpression have been demonstrated in the majority of adrenocortical carcinomas. In addition to IGF-II overexpression, increased levels of the IGF-I-receptor and IGFBP-2 have been found in advanced human adrenocortica…
Transporteurs ABC peroxysomaux et adrénoleucodystrophie liée au chromosome X
2012
X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease associated with mutations in the ABCD1 gene, which encodes for a peroxisomal ABC transporter. Thanks to the efforts of the ELA foundation and to the recent successes of gene therapy published in Science in 2009, X-ALD is better known but still remains poorly understood. The exact role of ABCD1 and its homologs, as well as the exact link between the biochemical and metabolic peroxisomal defects and the clinical symptoms of the disease remain to be elucidated. This review summarizes the knowledge concerning the subfamily D of the ABC transporter family and concerning X-ALD, the most frequent peroxisomal disorder.
Hydropower: renewable and contributing to sustainable development? A critical analysis from the Mazar-Dudas project (Ecuador)
2022
The energy transition has provided a framework for designing and implementing renewable energy policies in a growing number of countries in recent years. The discourse from both international energy organisations and national governments around these renewable energy policies highlights its -supposed- sustainable nature. However, much evidence shows that the 'renewable' component of these energy policies and the impact on local communities' sustainable development are much smaller than what is claimed in their discourse. This paper analyses the Mazar-Dudas hydropower project (Ecuador) case study, which is officially classified as a small renewable energy project (21 MW) with presumable low …
Lipolysis in isolated epididymal adipocytes from genetically obese Zucker rat treated with 3,5,3'-L-triiodothyronine.
1990
Abstract. Glycerol released by isolated epididymal adipocytes was measured in 6-8 weeks old genetically obese (fa/fa) and lean (C.c.a/-) male Zucker rats, ip treated or not treated with T3 (0.46, 2.3 and 4.6 nmol/100 g in a single injection or 4.6 nmol · (100 g)−1 · day−1 for 5 days). In the non-treated rats, lipolysis was less stimulated by adrenalin or isoproterenol in obese than in lean rats, whereas it was stimulated by theophylline up to the same level in both kinds of rats. A single injection of the T3 (highest dose) increased isoproterenol-induced lipolysis in the lean but not in the obese rats. The 5-day T3 treatment caused a stimulation of the adrenalin- or isoproterenol-induced li…
La sostenibilidad y el debate nuclear
2008
Sustainability and the nuclear power debateNuclear power is being presented as a “green solution” to the energetic problem, because it doesn’t generates CO2 emissions. We intend to show that this indubitable advantage does not compensates other serious inconveniences that recommend rejecting the n…
The Odd Sibling: Features ofβ3-Adrenoceptor Pharmacology
2014
beta(3)-Adrenoceptor agonists have recently been introduced for the treatment of overactive urinary bladder syndrome. Their target, the beta(3)-adrenoceptor, was discovered much later than beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptors and exhibits unique properties which make extrapolation of findings from the other two subtypes difficult and the beta(3)-adrenoceptor a less-understood subtype. This article discusses three aspects of beta(3)-adrenoceptor pharmacology. First, the ligand-recognition profile of beta(3)-adrenoceptors differs considerably from that of the other two subtypes, i.e., many antagonists considered as nonselective actually are beta(3)-sparing, including propranolol or nadolol. Man…
Ville et fortifications : de l'héritage à la production du territoire urbain
2015
A large number of french cities host military historical edifices (citadels, barracks, bastions, defensive walls, etc.). Although their initial defensive functions have been lost over time, these edifices remain deeply rooted in the urban fabric of their host cities. They continue exerting an impact on these cities’ urban morphology and modern-time functions as well as the way in which the concept of city is understood. Cities nowadays face some new challenges, the increasing awareness of urban sprawl and its consequences, coupled with an urge to promote a renewed and sustainable urbanism, invites us to adopt new approaches to study urban fortifications. In addition to their symbolic aspect,…
