Parental Stress and Parental Ratings of Behavioral Problems of Enuretic Children.
2019
Background: Primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) may have a stressful impact on the everyday life of children and parents, and it may represent a cumulative stress factor increasing feelings of "learned helplessness." Methods: The current study investigated parental stress in a group of parents (n = 330) of children affected by PMNE, compared to a group of parents (n = 330) of typical developing children (TDC). In addition, the study evaluated whether parents of PMNE children experience more emotional, social, and behavioral problems in their children, compared to parents of TDC. Finally, the study correlated frequency of enuresis with stress values and Child Behavior Checklist…

Parental warmth and socio-emotional adjustment in Brazilian, Canadian, Chinese and Italian children: A cross-cultural perspective
2008
The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the role of cultural context in shaping parental warmth and its linkages with children’s socio-emotional adjustment in Brazilian, Canadian, Chinese and Italian children. We were interested in several specific issues including (1) whether there were cross-cultural differences in parental warmth among the samples, and (2) whether the relations between parental acceptance-rejection and child outcomes were similar across cultures. In addition, we were interested in whether children perceived mothers and fathers differently with respect to the provision of warmth, and whether maternal warmth and paternal warmth made differential contributions t…
Parenting beliefs and behaviors: Initial findings from the International Consortium for the Study of Social and Emotional Development (ICSSED)
2006
The chapter is focused on the ways by which cultures impart meanings to behavior and determine how individuals (i.e. parents and peers) perceive, evaluate and react to behavior, regulating, at the same time, its developmental process. Specifically, the behavior under examination is behavioral inhibition defined as a pattern of responding or behaving such that when unfamiliar and/or challenging situation are encountered, the child show signs of reactive anxiety, distress or disorganization and the child has difficulties to calm down. Data were collected in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Italy, India and Korea. The goal of the study was to explore cultural differences among countries regar…
Mothering, fathering, and Italian adolescents' problem behaviors and life satisfaction: Dimensional and typological approach
2013
In this study, we explored the relationship between mothering, fathering and Italian adolescents’ problem behaviors and life satisfaction by using both typological and dimensional approaches. From a typological perspective, we examined variations in adolescent adjustment as a function of maternal and paternal parenting styles. From a dimensional perspective, we examined the relationships between crucial dimensions of perceived mothering and fathering (acceptance and strictness) and their contribution to adolescents’ adjustment, for girls and boys separately. A total of 213 adolescents (99 boys and 114 girls), aged from 14 to 16 years of age, completed self-report measures on perceived paren…
Overparenting hurts me: how does it affect offspring psychological outcomes?
2021
This review focuses on a peculiar typology of parenting characterized by overprotection, overinvolvement, overcontrol and an excess of entanglement; academic literature refers to this parenting style with the term overparenting or helicopter parenting. An in-depth description of overparenting constitutes the first part of this review. The second part of this review reports empirical evidence regarding the effects of overparenting on offspring psychological outcomes with particular regard to internalizing and externalizing disorders, coping strategies and dysfunctional personality traits. Depression and anxiety symptoms are frequently exhibited in offspring exposed to overparenting, as well …
2015
Early negative experiences could facilitate the formation of insecure internal working models and could deteriorate symbolic competence; in adulthood, attachment style could affect partner’s choice and parenting function. Current research on attachment intergenerational transmission shows that exposure to domestic violence is associated to maladaptive outcome in children. In order to give evidence to intergenerational con- tinuity of attachment we analyzed early traumatic experiences and attachment styles in a group of five family units, who were living in a Safe House for women and chil- dren escaped from domestic violence. The Adult Attachment Interview was adminis- tered to five mothers,…
Il disturbo da gioco d'azzardo: la dipendenza patologica come patologia della relazione
2020
Gambling disorder is placed in DSM-5 among addictive disorders in the subsection of “non-substance-related disorders”, defining it as «persistent and recurrent problematic gambling behavior leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, in a 12-month period» (APA, 2013). The aim of this paper, through a review of the literature and a description of a clinical case, is to highlight the relational aspect of the GAP disorder by describing different forms of “relationship pathology” among its main effects. National and international literature highlights how the gambling represents a traumatic family experience, that involves all the systems of the player life with both human and soc…
