Clinical results of transanal endoscopic microsurgery

Using the "transanal endoscopic microsurgery" technique, 140 patients were treated at the Department of Surgery in Cologne and Mainz. Of the patients with adenomas, 68.2% had typical symptoms preoperatively. The postoperative hospital attendance was 8.7 days, with an average resection size of 14.4 cm2. The postoperative complication rate was 5%, and there were no deaths related to the technique. In a prospective controlled trial, 2.2% of the patients with adenomas treated endoscopically in Mainz showed recidivation, requiring reoperation. The follow-up rate was 100%. Traumatic damage to the cartilage influences outcome of anatomically reduced acetabular fractures: A medium-term retrospective analysis

We reviewed 77 patients with an acetabular fracture, treated operatively through a non-extensile approach after an average time of 45 months. The ilioinguinal approach was chosen in 41, the Kocher-Langenbeck approach in 36 patients. Following the Letournel classification, the most frequent lesions were posterior wall (26%), two-column (22.1%) and anterior column (14.3%) fractures. Subchondral impaction, intra-articular fracture fragments and fracture comminution, called modifiers, could be identified in the preoperative CT-data of 38 patients (49.4%). To examine the tissue samples of 2 corneal recipients from a rabies-infected donor for the presence of rabies to explain their survival.Interventional case series with a review of the literature. The explanted corneal donor buttons were examined via nested reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. The patients were followed up ophthalmologically and neurologically. Antirabies antibodies were measured in blood samples, and skin biopsies were examined by direct fluorescent antibody staining.Two patients received corneas from the same multiorgan donor. Phantom Limb Pain in Daily Practice—Still a Lot of Work to Do!

Objectives. Effective treatment of phantom limb pain (PLP, pain felt in the part of the body of an amputated limb) is still difficult to achieve, and improved treatment is needed. It is therefore of paramount interest to understand the current practice of PLP therapy outside pain centers. Design. As a part of a nationwide survey, 537 amputees were asked 11 questions related to their treatment experiences and the pain relief. Furthermore, the patients' opinion about the quality of medical care was also asked. Results. Five hundred thirty-seven out of 1088 amputees returned the questionnaire (49.4%). Purpose To present the 4-year follow-up results in the surgical treatment of hypotony following trabeculectomy with mitomycin C in glaucoma patients with additional flap sutures. Design Retrospective interventional case series. Methods Since 2006, 53 patients with hypotony maculopathy attributable to overfiltration following glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy with mitomycin C) were included in this institutional study. Abstract In 9 of 93 patients (9.7%) with urothelial cancer of the upper tract (7 renal pelvis tumors, 3 ureteral tumors), conservative surgery was employed using a free peritoneal autotransplant for replacement of the renal pelvis in 5 kidneys. Absolute indications for conservative surgery were solitary kidneys/nonfunctioning contralateral kidneys in 4 patients and bilateral tumors in 1 patient. Local recurrences developed 1-3 years after operation in 4 of 6 kidneys (3 patients), 3 of which had grade-2 and grade-3 primary lesions.
