Process-Optimized Minimally Invasive Total Hip Replacement via a Direct Anterior Approach with Navigation Control of Leg Length and Offset

The purpose of this study was to analyze a new concept of using the minimally invasive direct anterior approach (DAA) in total hip replacement (THR) in combination with a leg positioner (Rotex-Table) and a modified retractor system (Condor). To control leg length and offset, the navigation system OrthoPilot® (B. Braun, Aesculap) or the Medacta system was used. Objective: To investigate the association between some fertile life characteristics and Parkinson disease (PD) in women. Methods: Women affected by PD and control subjects were matched one to one by age (±2 years). One hundred thirty-one women with idiopathic PD and 131 matched control subjects were interviewed. Gaucher disease is a autosomal recessive inherited monogenic disease caused by beta-glucocerebrosidase deficiency. Clinically, there are three types: type 1 (non-neuronopathic), type 2 (acute neuronopathic) and type 3 (chronic neuronopathic), in 92%, 1% and respectively 7% of patients. Transfemoral aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become a standard therapeutic option for patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis. Special anatomies can pose distinct challenges for vascular access and later closure of the access site, for example, in preoperated patients. Here, we elucidate a case of transfemoral TAVR with vascular access by direct puncture of an aorto-bifemoral bypass graft and illustrate the feasibility of vascular closure by an anchored collagen-plug vascular closure device (Teleflex MANTA® ).

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been reported to exert a positive effect on preserving muscle strength following the menopause, however, the mechanism of action remains unclear. We examined whether the mechanism involved preservation of muscle composition as determined by skeletal muscle attenuation. Eighty women aged 50-57 years were randomly assigned to either: HRT, exercise (Ex), HRT + exercise (ExHRT), and control (Co) for 1 year. Aims: The usefulness of estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in preventing oxidative stress associated with menopause is controversial. We aimed to study if there is a critical time window for effective treatment of the effects of ovariectomy with estrogens at the molecular, metabolic, and cellular level. Results: Our main finding is that early, but not late onset of ERT prevents an ovariectomy-associated increase in mitochondrial hydrogen peroxide levels, oxidative damage to lipids and proteins, and a decrease in glutathione peroxidase and catalase activity in rats.
