Post-traumatic lipoma of the parotid gland: case report

2008

The incidence of lipoma among parotid tumours ranges from 0.6% to 4.4%, with most series reporting an incidence of 1%. The most common origin of these tumours, in the parotid gland, is from the superficial lobe and, only rarely, from the deep lobe. Lipomas, upon clinical history, are found to be most frequently related to an episode of trauma. Computed Tomography scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging can lead to a pre-operative diagnosis of lipoma. The case is described of lipoma of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland.

Gastric plasma biomarkers and Operative Link for Gastritis Assessment gastritis stage

2011

Introduction The Operative Link for Gastritis Assessment (OLGA) staging system has been proposed as a histopathological reporting system of gastric atrophy. Noninvasive methods for indirect evaluation of gastric mucosal atrophy by biomarkers are also being introduced. Objectives To analyze gastric mucosal atrophy by biomarkers, pepsinogen I (PgI), pepsinogen II (PgII), PgI/PgII ratio, fasting gastrin-17 (G-17), stimulated gastrin-17 (sG-17), in relation to OLGA gastritis stage. Patients and methods Gastric biopsies were taken from 269 prospective patients referred for upper endoscopy because of dyspeptic problems and evaluated by two expert pathologists (D.J. and P.S.). Atrophy was assessed…

Systematic review of the health-related quality of life issues facing adolescents and young adults with cancer

2017

Contains fulltext : 174665.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) PURPOSE: For adolescents and young adults (AYAs), the impact of a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment is likely to be distinct from other age groups given the unique and complex psychosocial challenges of this developmental phase. In this review of the literature, we report the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) issues experienced by AYAs diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO and the Cochrane Library Databases were searched for publications reporting HRQoL of AYAs. Issues generated from interviews with AYAs or from responses to patient reported outcome measures…

Heterogeneity of obesity-asthma association disentangled by latent class analysis, the SAPALDIA cohort

2017

Although evidence for the heterogeneity of asthma accumulated, consensus for definitions of asthma phenotypes is still lacking. Obesity may have heterogeneous effects on various asthma phenotypes. We aimed to distinguish asthma phenotypes by latent class analysis and to investigate their associations with different obesity parameters in adults using a population-based Swiss cohort (SAPALDIA). We applied latent class analysis to 959 self-reported asthmatics using information on disease activity, atopy, and age of onset. Associations with obesity were examined by multinomial logistic regression, after adjustments for age, sex, smoking status, educational level, and study centre. Body mass ind…

IL28B polymorphisms influence stage of fibrosis and spontaneous or interferon-induced viral clearance in thalassemia patients with hepatitis C virus …

2012

Background. Polymorphisms in the interleukin-28B are important determinants in the spontaneous and drug-induced control of hepatitis C virus infection. Design and Methods. We assessed the association of rs8099917 and rs12979860 polymorphisms with spontaneous viral clearance, severity of liver fibrosis, and response to interferon-monotherapy in 245 Thalassemia Major patients with Hepatitis C Virus infection. Results. Ninety-eight patients (40%) had a spontaneous viral clearance, while 147 patients (60%) developed a chronic infection. Spontaneous viral clearance was more frequent among patients with the T/T genotype of rs8099917 polymorphism (OR 2.130; p=0.008) or C/C genotype of rs12979860 p…

A manual therapy and home stretching program in patients with primary frozen shoulder contracture syndrome : a case series

2019

Abstract: Background Manual therapy has been demonstrated to reduce pain and improve function in patients with frozen shoulder contracture syndrome (FSCS), but no evidence exists to support one form of manual therapy over another. The purpose of this case series was to describe both short and long-term outcomes after a manual therapy program and home stretching exercises based on specific impairments in shoulder mobility and level of tissue irritability in patients with FSCS. Case Description Eleven patients with primary FSCS were treated with an individually tailored multimodal manual therapy approach once weekly for 12 visits coupled with home stretching exercises once a day, five days pe…

Role of Endoplasmic Reticulum and Oxidative Stress Parameters in the Pathophysiology of Disease-Related Malnutrition in Leukocytes of an Outpatient P…

2019

Cellular pathways such as inflammation or oxidative stress are the cause and triggers of disease-related malnutrition (DRM), but the influence of these markers on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is unknown. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between mitochondrial function and ER stress parameters in a DRM population. The study population was composed of 82 outpatient subjects, of whom 45 were diagnosed with DRM and 37 were confirmed to be normonourished according to the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition ASPEN criteria. We evaluated anthropometrical and biochemical parameters, pro-inflammatory cytokines in serum. Oxidative and ER stress markers …

Accelerometer assessment of physical activity in individuals with paraplegia who do and do not participate in physical exercise

2018

OBJECTIVE: Our main goal was to measure physical activity (PA) in people with paraplegia. Secondarily, we aimed to establish the relationship between being engaged in physical exercise (PE) and reaching the recommended moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) level. We further analyzed the effect of being engaged in PE on the PA levels. DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional. SETTING: Spanish associations for individuals with spinal cord injury. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-six manual wheelchair users with chronic paraplegia. INTERVENTIONS: Participants wore a wrist accelerometer for one week. OUTCOME MEASURES: Levels of PA and sedentary behavior. In addition, participants were classified into tw…

Associations between informant ratings of personality disorder traits, self-reports of personality, and directly observed behavior.

2018

Objective Diagnoses of personality disorders (PD) must rely on judgments of observers-either clinicians or acquaintances-because personality disorders are primarily defined in terms of maladaptive interpersonal behavior. Little is known, however, about how closely acquaintances' judgments of PD traits relate to self-reports of theoretically relevant Big Five traits or directly observed behavioral outcomes in interpersonal situations. The present study examines associations between judgments of the 10 PD traits provided by close acquaintances, self-reports of PD-relevant Big Five personality traits, and observed interpersonal behaviors across three different three-person laboratory interacti…

Problematic video game use as an emotional coping strategy: Evidence from a sample of MMORPG gamers

2019

Background A positive relationship between problematic gaming and escapism motivation to play video games has been well established, suggesting that problematic gaming may result from attempts to deal with negative emotions. However, to date, no study has examined how emotion dysregulation affects both escapism motives and problematic gaming patterns. Methods Difficulties in emotion regulation, escapism, and problematic involvement with video games were assessed in a sample of 390 World of Warcraft players. A structural equation modeling framework was used to test the hypothesis that escapism mediates the relationship between emotion dysregulation and problematic gaming. Results Statistica…
