Acute endothelial failure after cosmetic iris implants (NewIris®)

We report a case of an acute endothelial failure after the implantation of a new cosmetic, colored, artificial iris diaphragm implant called NewIris(®). A 21-year-old woman came to us complaining of progressive loss of vision and pain after NewIris lenses had been implanted. Decreased visual acuity, corneal edema, and increased intraocular pressure in both eyes appeared only 3 weeks after the surgery. The lenses were removed as soon as possible but had already severely affected the endothelial cell count. NewIris implants are an alternative to cosmetic contact lenses, but they are not as safe as other phakic anterior chamber intraocular lenses, nor are they a good option for the patient.

Pharmacodynamic approach to study the gene transfer process employing non-viral vectors

Abstract In the present work we set out to apply pharmacodynamic concepts derived from dose–response curves (Potency and Efficacy) to characterize the gene transfer efficiency of a vector:DNA complex. We employed two widely used vectors, the cationic lipid DOTAP (N,N,N-trimethyl 1-2-3-bis (1-oxo-9-octa-decenyl)oxy-(Z,Z)-1-propanaminium methyl sulfate) and the cationic polymer PEI (polyethylenimine, 800 kDa) to transfect several constructions of the green fluorescent protein cDNA. Diagnosis and therapeutic management of primary headache in an emergency setting

Introduction and aim: Much headachers are under or mis-diagnoses and data regarding the proportion of patients attending an emergency department (ED) because of headache are still few. We conducted a retrospective observational study in an ED with the following aims: (a) estimate the proportion of headache attending to an ED (b) to estimate and describe the therapeutic management of primary headache and (c) to assessment the exam most frequently requested. Materials and methods: We collected data regarding patients diagnosed with headache consecutively attending the ED of the University of Palermo between September 2011 and March 2012. The study was approved by the ethics committee. Results: Between the semester evaluated 25110 subjects were admitted to ED headache suffers were equal to 1.6 %. Of these 263 (63.1 %) were woman and 154 (36.9 %). Mean age was 44.2 (DS ± 18.4) years (p = 0.068).According to ED registry headache admission was as follow assigned: 76.5 % with a diagnosis of headache 22.8 % with a secondary headache 0.7 % with Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalgias (TACs). Among those with a primary headache about 36 % of patient did not received a pharmacological treatment. Monotherapy was prescribed less frequently than combination therapy (19.1 vs 44.5 %).In monotherapy the most frequent medication were NSAIDs (28.3 %) benzodiazepines (26.7 %) and dopamine antagonists (11.7 %). Among those with a primary headache a CT scan was performed in the 124 subjects and 111 (34.8 %) had a neurologist consultation. Discussion: Our data are in line with the one previously reported in literature. The most frequently medication in the Italian ED were NSAIDs benzodiazepines dopamine antagonists and steroids. Neverless our data unlikely can be compared to other study give a snapshot. We believe that much more can be done to improve treatment of primary headache in ED.Settore MED/26 - Neurologia

Synthesis of linear and three-arm star tert-chlorine-telechelic polyisobutylenes by a two-step conventional laboratory process

A two-step conventional laboratory process was developed for the synthesis of mono- and difunctional linear and three-arm star tert-chlorine-telechelic polyisobutylenes (PIB) with desired molecular weights (MW) and narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD) by living carbocationic polymerization (LCCP). This polymerization method applies easy to handle operations and chemicals. LCCP of isobutylene (IB), was carried out in CH2Cl2 as solvent and with BCl3 as coinitiator in the first step to obtain soluble low MW PIB prepolymer with narrow MWD. Il contributo presenta i risultati di un’analisi sull'espressione dell’agente nelle costruzioni passive per mezzo di un sintagma preposizionale (cfr. il cane è stato mangiato dal gatto) negli antichi volgari italoromanzi centrali e meridionali. In particolare, si affrontano due questioni finora inesplorate: a) la semantica delle preposizioni che marcano il partecipante defocalizzato, tipicamente un agente (da, per); b) la distribuzione funzionale che sembra semanticamente determinata. Sistēma reizi noteikta laika periodā izpilda vispārējās pārbaudes par visu moduļu datiem, veic datu apstrādi un atjauno ierakstus datu bāzē. Ja datu iegūšanas vai apstrādes laikā tiek saņemts kāds kļūdas paziņojums, tad par to tiek informēts sistēmas lietotājs. Sistēma izstrādāta uz Javascript ietvara Meteor.js.
