Diagnosis of exon 12‐positive polycythemia vera rescued by NGS

2020

Abstract A JAK2V617F‐negative polycythemia associated with low serum epo needs to be tested for an exon 12 JAK2 mutation. When negative, due to potential serious complications in PV, a next generation sequencing is necessary to rule out false negative results.

Use of low dose of rFVIIa (recombinant Factor VII activated) to control late bleeding after percutaneous dilational tracheostomy

2019

Key Clinical Message In our case, the use of a low intravenous bolus dose of rFVIIa (recombinant factor VII activated; 15‐20 mcg/kg) was effective and uneventful in controlling late postprocedural PDT bleeding associated with thrombocytopenia that cannot be corrected and after all other treatments failed.

Are there similar or divergent transitions to adulthood in a Mediterranean context? A cross-national comparison of Italy and Spain

2016

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences and similarities between Italy and Spain in regard to emerging adults’ perceptions of identity status, autonomy, attachment, and life satisfaction. The goal was to verify whether a Mediterranean model of transitions from adolescence to adulthood exists. Three hundred and forty undergraduate students (171 Italians and 169 Spanish) ranging in age from 19 to 22 completed measures of identity status, emotional autonomy, attachment style, and life satisfaction. Multiple correspondence analyses provided a graphic synthesis of results. The results indicate that no common model of young adult development exists in Spain and Italy and that Ita…

Prone positioning and convalescent plasma therapy in a critically ill pregnant woman with COVID-19

2020

Abstract Prone positioning is feasible in pregnancy and may have contributed to the positive outcome in this case. Doctors should not be reluctant to move a patient to a prone position just because they are pregnant.

Feasibility of the Allergy Questionnaire for Athletes (AQUA © ) in pediatric age

2018

A burden of respiratory and allergic symptoms up to almost 60% has been observed in young and adult athletes, influencing physical performances1 . The Allergy Questionnaire for Athletes (AQUA©) is a validated screening tool for the prediction of the atopic status in adult athletes2 ; it was recently tested in Belgian young elite athletes (12-14 years old)3 , but its actual feasibility and suitability for children and adolescent was not evaluated. Indeed, there is evidence that children are prone to employ "satisficing" response strategies, answering every question positively/negatively, or simply not answering4 . Therefore, the present cross-sectional survey was carried out to assess feasib…

COVID‐19 and exacerbation of dermatological diseases: A review of the available literature

2021

Abstract Since the emergence of the new coronavirus disease 19 (COVID‐19) pandemic, there has been a concern for the patients with chronic autoimmune diseases including dermatological conditions over the potential exacerbation of these underlying conditions after infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV2). We performed a systematic review to evaluate presentations, postinfection change in the manifestation, diagnosis, and management of flare‐ups of underlying dermatologic disease in patients with COVID‐19. A total of 17 articles were recovered reporting on flare‐ups of dermatological disease including pemphigus vulgaris, psoriasis, subacute cutaneous lupus er…

Emotional Distress Following Childbirth: An Intervention to Buffer Depressive and PTSD Symptoms.

2015

Childbirth for some women is a negative experience associated with depressive and post-traumatic symptoms. The preventive actions focusing on helping mothers to cope with negative emotions experienced after childbirth are strongly recommended. It is also recommended both to intervene early and on all women to avoid the risk that these symptoms can worsen in the months after childbirth. The intervention described in the current study is focalized on the elaboration of post-partum negative thoughts and emotion through a writing task, with the purpose to help new mothers to reflect, understand, evaluate and, thus, reformulate the stressful situation with new beliefs and emotions. 176 women age…

Fully robotic Ivor–Lewis esophagectomy (RAMIE4) for esophageal cancer after emergency surgery and ligation of the gastroduodenal artery

2018

We report a case of a 69-year-old patient with esophageal cancer and severe upper gastrointestinal bleeding during neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy who required mass transfusion followed by complex emergency procedures. Despite endoscopic stenting, the bleeding recurred, and thus emergency open surgery was required. Gastric wedge resection of the minor curvature necessitated by perforation caused by the endoscopic stent maneuver and duodenotomy with ligation of the gastroduodenal artery, as the cause of persistent intraluminal bleeding, were performed. The already prepared gastric conduit during the emergency operation did not become ischemic, even though the gastroduodenal artery, left gastr…

Persistent endotheliopathy in the pathogenesis of long COVID syndrome

2021

Background Persistent symptoms including breathlessness, fatigue, and decreased exercise tolerance have been reported in patients after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. The biological mechanisms underlying this “long COVID” syndrome remain unknown. However, autopsy studies have highlighted the key roles played by pulmonary endotheliopathy and microvascular immunothrombosis in acute COVID-19. Objectives To assess whether endothelial cell activation may be sustained in convalescent COVID-19 patients and contribute to long COVID pathogenesis. Patients and Methods Fifty patients were reviewed at a median of 68 days following SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition to clinical workup, acute phase markers, …
