Association between Conflict and Cholera in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Cholera outbreaks significantly contribute to disease mortality and morbidity in low- and middle-income countries. Cholera outbreaks have several social and environmental risk factors and extreme conditions can act as catalysts. A social extreme with known links to infectious disease outbreaks is conflict, causing disruption to services, loss of income and displacement. Here, we used the self-controlled case series method in a novel application and found that conflict increased the risk of cholera in Nigeria by 3.6 times and 19.7% of cholera outbreaks were attributable to conflict. Background To compare and characterize the gut microbiota in women of childbearing age from sub-Saharan Africa (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, DRC) and South Asia (India), in relation to dietary intakes. Methods Women of childbearing age were recruited from rural DRC and India as part of the Women First (WF) preconception maternal nutrition trial. Findings presented include fecal 16S rRNA gene-based profiling of women in the WF trial from samples obtained at the time of randomization, prior to initiation of nutrition intervention and to conception. The objective of this study was to characterize the genetic structure of two Balkan brown trout morphotypes, Salmo macedonicus and Salmo pelagonicus, and to test whether molecular traits support the species’ status proposed by traditional morphological identification. The mitochondrial DNA 12S-rDNA, cyt b and control region genes were sequenced in 15 specimens collected from three localities in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The results of these markers did not support the taxonomic category of species but confirmed the existence of two morphotypes, Salmo trutta macedonicus and Salmo trutta pelagonicus, in the Aegean–Adriatic lineages of the Salmo trutta species complex.

El artículo analiza los modelos de masculinidad propuestos por el republicanismo posrevolucionaria en la España isabelina. Aunque esta masculinidad coincide en numerosos aspectos con la de las diversas culturas políticas de la gran familia liberal, posee una serie de rasgos distintivos. En primer lugar, su fidelidad al ideal revolucionario del hombre patriótico: un hombre político y muy varonil, que toma las armas para regenerar (revirilizar) una nación corrompida. Por otro lado, este ideal no estaría reñido con un determinado modelo de "hombre de bien" sentimental, de raíces dieciochescas, cuya moral privada es el fundamento irrenunciable de su condición de ciudadano.

In 1958 the court in Toruń sentenced Adam Czekalski, the national correspondent of the daily Narodowiec published in Lens in France to 3 years of prison. Czekalski was probably the first person tried after October 1956 for maintaining contacts with an emigration magazine and publishing articles abroad. He was convicted for a similar “crime” some years earlier. Today he is unknown and nearly forgotten, despite being a person of strong character. Ailing, he died in prison, a month after being arrested. He was only 57.
