In December 1922, the first presidential election in history took place in Poland. Voting was not universal because the National Assembly made their choice. One of the candidates for the office of president was proposed by Stanislaw Thugutt. He was the leader of the Polish People’s Party “Wyzwolenie/Liberation”. PPP “Wyzwolenie/Liberation” was one of the largest peasant parties in interwar Poland. In comparison with the largest peasant party in the Second Polish Republic – the Polish People’s Party “Piast” was a leftist party. One of the elements of the process of modernization of the two armies of the Poland in the second and third decade of the eighteenth century was an attempt to improve the quality of the officers' staff.However, it took place only in the foreign part of the crown. In the years 1717-1724, its corps of officers was filled by a large group, over 100 officers, who possessed some professional experience of military service in the armies of Western Europe, primarily in Saxony. This undoubtedly contributed to the loyalty of this officer corps to the king, but did not lead to the strengthening of the military capabilities of the Polish army.

In 1956 in the National Museum in Warsaw there was to be and exhibition of the works of Feliks Topolski, a world-famous painter and illustrator living in Great Britain. The People’s Republic of Poland embassy in London contacted Topolski. Yet Topolski came to Poland only in 1961.

The article presents the position of “the Castle” on emigration (the President, government and the Council of the Republic of Poland) towards the events in Poland and the Eastern Bloc in 1956. The politicians and publicists of “the Castle”, observing some changes in the country, did not expect that they would lead to basic changes. The opinion prevailed that Poland was not an independent state and that the Soviet occupation still persisted. After WWII the Polish ocean liner “Batory” operated on the route Gdynia–New York, and from 1951 to India. The captain of the ship was Jan Ćwikliński. The Ministry for Public Security accused him of having a hostile attitude towards the People’s Republic of Poland and insisted on him being removed from his position as Batory captain. In the spring of 1953 the ship underwent a technical check-up at a shipyard in Great Britain. In the mean-time it was rumoured that the captain was to be arrested upon his return to Poland on suspicion of espionage. Głównym celem artykułu jest przedstawienie funkcji Prezydenta RP analizowanych pod kątem praktyki politycznej. Tak sformułowany cel pracy wychodzi poza ujęcie formalno-prawne, jednocześnie wskazując na praktyczne wymiary funkcji pełnionych przez głowę państwa w polskim systemie politycznym. Podstawową hipotezę badawczą stanowi założenie, zgodnie z którym Prezydent RP za sprawą posiadanych prerogatyw ma możliwość pełnienia roli aktywnego aktora na polskiej scenie politycznej.
