Student beliefs (or metacognitive knowledge) about SLA reconsidered

1995

In applied linguistics, interest in student beliefs (or metacognitive knowledge) about second language acquisition (SLA) is fairly recent, growing out of the emphasis on learner autonomy and on learner strategies in SLA. The purpose of this paper is to review those few studies that have been published so far, to give an outline of definitions of beliefs and research methodology, and finally to provide alternatives to these, based on recent developments in the social sciences. With a reconsideration of beliefs come reconsiderations of research data and methods.

Perceived tiredness among adolescents and its association with sleep habits and use of psychoactive substances

1997

This study investigated the variation in perceived tiredness among 11, 13 and 15-year-old Finnish adolescents (n = 4187). Additionally interrelationships between sleep habits, use of psychoactive substances (alcohol, tobacco and coffee) and perceived tiredness among 15-year-olds were examined. This study is part of an international, WHO-coordinated survey of school children's health and lifestyle (the HBSC Study). In Finland, research data represented the whole country. The data were collected in March-May 1994. Pupils responded anonymously to a standardized questionnaire during a class period. Subjective tiredness was very common and increased with age among adolescents. Perceived tirednes…

Initial motivation and progress with doctoral studies in computer science — A case study from a Finnish university

2014

Success in doctoral education has been studied from many theoretical and practical perspectives, but very few studies focus specifically on student motivation. In practice, graduate schools usually try to evaluate applicants' motivation in the admission process, assuming they are able to identify the initial motivation that would predict a successful doctoral path. The aim of this study is to bring new understanding to this field by studying the relationship between the students' initial motivation in enrolling doctoral studies and their actual progress with the studies. This is a case study conducted in a Finnish research university with full-time doctoral students in computing. The resear…

The Mafia Boss Yesterday and Today: Psychological Characteristics and Research Data

2015

This article describes Cosa Nostra bosses’ psychological characteristics starting from research data collected over almost twenty years (1994–2013). Through the use of fragments of interviews to justice collaborators and their wives, children, and sisters-in-law, we analyze the boss’ role and relational context. This article also reports the results of a recent research on the relationship between boss and white-collar workers, carried out through the analysis of environmental tapping recorded at a famous Sicilian Mafia boss’ house: Giuseppe Guttadauro. This research highlights the psychological diversity the relationship between boss and white-collar worker is based on. The analysis of env…

New technologies have radically transformed not only geography as a discipline but also the geographies of the world. Indeed the digital has assumed an increasingly pervasive mediating role in the production of space as of geographic knowledge and imaginaries. The possibilities offered by the virtual in particular now offer a decisive contribution in communicating the meanings attributed to places and respond increasingly effectively to the emerging needs of the tourism sector. Digitally mediated visitor experiences aim to engage the senses and are effective when they promote rigorously realistic immersions. Within the framework of these reflections the paper highlights the renewed relevance of authenticity both of the tourism experience and of cultural heritage in relation to its potential for attraction and proposes a contextualization of the theme in light of the unprecedented opportunities granted by technologies for the creation of virtual and augmented spaces. The proposed discussion is therefore also a journey aimed at exploring authenticity as a tool through which new technologies can effectively mediate a sense of place and foster brand communication of a destination. The case study is the UNESCO site of Tarragona whose most relevant image for urban policies is presented. This shared figuration spatially defined and rooted in a precise historical moment is reconstructed on the one hand through the analysis of functional documentation for the candidacy and on the other by means of a review of mobile applications developed for the promotion of the city's cultural heritage. The proposed journey and exploration of the place return in light of the research data and in conclusion the central role played by digital technologies in mediating the UNESCO imaginary. The forms of virtual tourism in Tarragona confirm that to travel is to experience a text enveloped in time and inscribed in space.Settore M-GGR/01 - Geografia

Mathematical Modelling of Leukemia Treatment

2021

Leukemia is a cancer that can be treated in a variety of ways: chemotherapy, radiation therapy and stem cell transplant. Recovery rates for this disease are relatively high, the treatment itself has a painful effect on the body and is accompanied by numerous side effects that can persist years after the patient is cured. For this reason, efforts are underway worldwide to develop more selective therapies that will only affect leukemia cells and not healthy cells. Knowledge of developmental GRN is yet scarce, and it is early for a systematic comparative effort. We consider mathematical model of genetic regulatory networks. This model consists of a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equ…

Datos abiertos de investigación. Camino recorrido y cuestiones pendientes

2017
