Digital game-based training of early reading skills : overview of the GraphoGame method in a highly transparent orthography / Entrenamiento de habili…
2014
Learning to read in a language with a transparent orthography is generally quick and easy. To be able to read any words, learners need to know how to connect the smallest spoken language units, phonemes, into the written counterparts, graphemes. However, even learning the basic alphabetic principle has proven difficult for some learners. Here we focus on children who struggle to learn to read in Finnish that has a highly transparent orthography. In an attempt to provide efficient early preventative support for such learners, a technologyenhanced learning environment, GraphoGame, was developed. The GraphoGame method focuses on the specific problematic areas of each individual learner using a…

A systematic review of physical fitness, physiological demands and biomechanical performance in equestrian athletes
2012
This article presents a systematic review of the literature investigating physical fitness, physiological demands and biomechanical performance in equestrian athletes. Three databases (SportsDiscus, CAB abstracts and PubMed) were searched to identify the literature. The main search term of ‘horse-riding’ was combined with eleven specific keywords (‘fitness’, ‘physiology’, ‘biomechanics’, ‘equestrian’, ‘athlete’, ‘co-ordination’, ‘heart rate’, ‘oxygen consumption’ ‘kinematic’ ‘EMG’ and ‘skill’). Exclusion criteria were: conference proceedings, abstracts, theses, and non-peer reviewed articles. Subsequently, 15 peer-reviewed papers were identified and included within this review. The main re…
Reporting, interpretation, and extrapolation issues (SPIN) in abstracts of orthodontic meta-analyses published from 2000 to 2020
2021
Summary Aim To assess the prevalence of and identify factors associated with SPIN in abstracts of orthodontic meta-analyses. Materials and methods Electronic search was performed within the contents of five orthodontic journals and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) to identify meta-analyses of studies involving humans, from 1 January 2000 until 31 August 2020. Inclusion of SPIN in the abstract of meta-analyses, defined as misleading reporting, misleading interpretation, and inappropriate extrapolation of the findings, was documented. Extent of SPIN and associations with journal and year of publication, type of study, number of authors, continent of authorship, methodologist…
Observed Classroom Quality Profiles of Kindergarten Classrooms in Finland
2012
Research Findings: The aim of the present study was to examine classroom quality profiles of kindergarten classrooms using a person-centered approach and to analyze these patterns in regard to teacher and classroom characteristics. Byler, 2004 ) observational ratings, were used in the analyses. L…
Identifying Critical Determinants of ‘Digital Customer Services’ Usage – An Exploratory Study
2019
Digital technology has reinvented retail business as well as commerce. This study aims to examine consumers’ perception and usage of digital customer services (DCS) and investigate three significant post-adoption and marketing consequences: simplicity, awareness, and usefulness. Using a purposeful sampling technique, 10 semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with banking customers in Finland in January 2019. The research findings suggest that simplicity regarding DCS occupies a key position in their prolonged use, while awareness and usability are also important. This study offers some valuable theoretical and managerial implications and suggests an agenda for future research. …
Relations between Kindergarten Teachers’ Occupational Well-being and the Quality of Teacher-child Interactions
2020
Research Findings The aim of this study was to examine associations between two aspects of teachers’ occupational well-being, i.e., teaching-related stress and work engagement, and the quality of teacher–child interactions in Finnish kindergarten classrooms. Participants were 47 kindergarten teachers with their classrooms of 6-year-old children. Teacher–child interactions (i.e., emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support) were observed twice during the kindergarten year (fall and spring), using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS). In addition, teachers completed questionnaires on stress and work engagement. The results indicated that teaching-related st…
