Effects of pathogen reduction systems on platelet microRNAs, mRNAs, activation, and function

Pathogen reduction (PR) systems for platelets, based on chemically induced cross-linking and inactivation of nucleic acids, potentially prevent transfusion transmission of infectious agents, but can increase clinically significant bleeding in some clinical studies. Here, we documented the effects of PR systems on microRNA and mRNA levels of platelets stored in the blood bank, and assessed their impact on platelet activation and function. Detection of mitochondrial electron chain carrier redox status by transhepatic light intensity during rat liver reperfusion.

The aim of the study was to investigate mitochondrial electron transfer during rat liver reperfusion after cold storage and hypothermic machine perfusion. Livers from male Brown Norway rats were preserved (UW) for 10h either by cold storage (CS) or by hypothermic oxygenated perfusion extracorporal (HOPE). Transhepatic photometric analysis allowed determination of the redox status of mitochondrial cytochromes during preservation, rewarming and reperfusion. An increasing number of young women are being diagnosed with cancer, and most cancer treatments have irreversibly negative effects on reproduction. Ovarian stimulation and preservation of oocytes or embryos is far from an ideal solution, in part because hormonal treatment may adversely affect some cancers. Another possibility is cryopreservation of ovarian tissue for later autotransplantation, but the ischemic damage caused by the procedure can lead to follicle loss. Evaluation of biological and antimicrobial properties of freeze-dried whey fermented by different strains ofLactobacillus plantarum

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biological and antimicrobial activities of commercial freeze-dried whey fermented by lactic acid bacteria in order to valorize this high polluting liquid waste of the dairy industry. Freeze-dried whey was fermented by different strains of Lactobacillus plantarum (CECT 220, 221, 748) at three different times of fermentation (24, 48, 72 h). Whey fermented by using Lactobacillus plantarum strains: A promising approach to increase the shelf life of pita bread

Nowadays, there is an increasing concern regarding the shelf life of food products, leading producers to research natural antimicrobial agents to use in food preparation. In this study, we evaluated the antifungal activity of Lactobacillus plantarum fermented whey and then added the whey during preparation of pita bread to study shelf-life improvement. The fermented whey showed a satisfactory inhibitory (antifungal) effect against Penicillium expansum and Penicillium brevicompactum strains: the minimum inhibitory and minimum fungicidal concentrations ranged from 3.9 to 39.0 g/L and from 62.5 to 250 g/L, respectively. Oxidative stability of virgin olive oils

An investigation was carried out on virgin olive oils of the Gentile (Larino), Gentile (Colletorto), Coratina, and Leccino varieties, harvested at different times, to assess their oxidation stability. The olive oils were analyzed by means of peroxide, K-232, and K 270 values at 1, 6, 12, and 18 mon of storage in green bottles, in the dark, at temperatures ranging from a mean of 6degreesC in winter to 12degreesC in summer. Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni as a natural antioxidant/antimicrobial for high pressure processed fruit extract: Processing parameter optimization

Halloysite Nanotubes Loaded with Calcium Hydroxide: Alkaline Fillers for the Deacidification of Waterlogged Archeological Woods

A novel green protocol for the deacidifying consolidation of waterlogged archaeological woods through aqueous dispersions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1500 and halloysite nanotubes containing calcium hydroxide has been designed. First, we prepared functionalized halloysite nanotubes filled with Ca(OH)2 in their lumen. The controlled and sustained release of Ca(OH)2 from the halloysite lumen extended its neutralization action over time, allowing the development of a long-term deacidification of the wood samples.
