Evaluation of Residual Stresses During Fatigue Test in an FSW Joint

2008

At present, friction stir welding (FSW) represents one of the most interesting techniques in the field of welding. The process is has been implemented in industrial practice for joining aluminium alloys, while the welding of the titanium alloy and the steels is still primarily in a developmental stage.

Fatigue crack growth in 2024-T351 Friction Stir Welded Joints: longitudinal residual stresses and microstructural effects

2009

Abstract The role of longitudinal residual stress on propagation of fatigue cracks was examined in friction stir welds produced in 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. Fatigue crack growth rate was obtained through constant Δ K Iapp tests for notches at different distances from the weld centerline. Subsequently, crack growth was correlated to weld residual stress measured by the cut-compliance method. It was found that residual stresses correspond to low crack growth rates outside the weld zone during fatigue loading. Once in the weld zone, the crack growth was affected by microstructural and hardness changes. Furthermore, weld residual stresses were mechanically relieved and effects on crack propagat…

Improved FE model for simulation of friction stir welding of different materials

2010

Abstract One of the most relevant aspects of friction stir welding is the possibility to weld different materials. In the present paper, the authors present an improved continuum finite element model for the simulation of friction stir welding processes aimed to obtain T joints, made of a stringer in AA7175-T73511 and of a skin in AA2024-T4. The model, taking into account the thermomechanical behaviours of the two different materials, is utilised to study the occurring material flow and residual stress state. Numerical results are compared with experimental observations: the model is able to predict the material flow, obtaining important information on the joint failure mode.

Moisture Effects on Patch Bonded Composite Repairs

2016

The present work investigated the effects of moisture absorption on the residual tensile strength of unnotched, notched and double-patch repaired carbon/epoxy composites. Patches were bonded to the parent plate using Araldite2015 adhesive. Specimens were aged in demineralised water at 70°C and tested at moisture content of 0% (dry), 3%, 6% and 7%. Results showed that upon ageing, a maximum of 11% and 17% of strength reduction was found in unnotched and repaired specimens, respectively. On the contrary, a maximum of 15% increment in strength was observed in notched specimens. In addition, good fits to the experimental data were found using the proposed residual strength model, with the maxim…

Mechanical and thermomechanical properties of radiation modified poly(ethylene-octene)/Ni-Zn ferrite nanocomposites

2013

Poly(ethylene-1-octene) copolymer (POE) composites filled with nickel-zinc ferrite nanoparticles have been modified by exposure to an electron beam at doses up to 500 kGy. The influence of radiation dose and ferrite content on mechanical properties has been investigated. Thermomechanical properties – thermorelaxation stresses formed in thermal heating and thermo residual stresses resulting in the process of full setting and cooling of materials have been investigated for radiation cross-linked oriented (extended up to 100%) composite samples. Increase of concentration of ferrite particles and increase of radiation dose affects a notable increase of elastic modulus and reduces the deformabil…

Multi-scale analysis to determine fibre/matrix debonding criteria in SiCTitanium composites with and without consideration of the manufacturing resid…

1998

Abstract Certain dissipative phenomena in long-fibre composites are still quite poorly understood, especially the debonding between the fibre and the matrix. The present study is an attempt to elucidate this phenomenon in SiC Titanium metal-matrix composites. The phenomenon is analysed both experimentally and numerically, both on the scale of the constituents and on the scale of the equivalent homogeneous material. This leads to the identification of a local debonding criterion which helps to determine a global debonding criterion. This approach is made for two cases, without and without consideration of the manufacturing residual stresses.

Effects of the indentation process on fatigue life of drilled specimens: optimization of the distance between adjacent holes

2016

The generation of permanent compressive stresses around the holes is recognized as a valuable mean to delay the onset and propagation of the defects and to extend the fatigue life of the mechanical components. In the work, a bilateral indentation process, performed on each side of the component, is widely used in order to create a residual circumferential stress field around the area to be drilled and that persists after the drilling operation. In order to evaluate the process parameters and to identify optimal geometric solutions, several static and fatigue tests are conducted on AW 6082-T6 aluminum alloy specimen where two holes are created. In particular, experimental tests on only drill…

Aluminum oxide/titanium dioxide nanolaminates grown by atomic layer deposition: Growth and mechanical properties

2017

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is based on self-limiting surface reactions. This and cyclic process enable the growth of conformal thin films with precise thickness control and sharp interfaces. A multilayered thin film, which is nanolaminate, can be grown using ALD with tuneable electrical and optical properties to be exploited, for example, in the microelectromechanical systems. In this work, the tunability of the residual stress, adhesion, and mechanical properties of the ALD nanolaminates composed of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) films on silicon were explored as a function of growth temperature (110-300 C), film thickness (20-300 nm), bilayer thickness (0.1-100 nm),…

Theoretical elastoplastic buckling of stringer stiffened cylindrical shells

1985

Abstract A linear analysis method is offered to predict the theoretical elastoplastic buckling of stringer stiffened cylindrical shells subjected to longitudinal loading. Welding residual stresses are taken into account in the calculation, but effects of geometrical imperfections and pre-buckling displacements are ignored. The examples analysed show a good correlation between the analytical results and those obtained experimentally with stocky models of moderate geometrical imperfections.

Residual stresses and FCP prediction in FSW through a continuous FE model

2009

Abstract Residual stresses prediction is definitively a relevant and open issue in welding processes. In the last years, different numerical models are proposed by many researchers to predict the residual stress field in FSW butt joint. However, most of these works are based on properly tuned analytical models and neglect the effect of the mechanical action due to the presence of the tool pin. In the present paper, a continuous 3D FE model, which was previously developed by some of the authors, was used to simulate the FSW process of butt joints with a single block approach, and predict the residual stress field by considering both thermal and mechanical actions. Then, the residual stress e…
